In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains the truth behind magnets and pain relief. There is little scientific evidence to support the use of magnets to help with pain relief or help with arthritis pain. Lots of anecdotal evidence to support it though. Their is overwhelming evidence though that magnets are great to hang things on your refrigerator.  And if you hang up a funny quote or funny cartoon that might make you smile and that laughter might help you relieve some of your pain. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain the effect artificial sweeteners have on the brain. While we are not getting into the dangers of aspartame stuff here, we would like to address the studies that talk about how your brain gets confused when it tastes something sweet but does not get the calories it is anticipating from that sweet taste. Real and artificial sweeteners effect the pleasure centers in your brain – don’t think their is much debate about that. When you consume real sugar your brain says in a Homer Simpson like way “mmmm sweets” and starts to feel full because of all the calories that are coming along with that deliciously sweet taste. But when you consume artificial sweeteners your brain starts thinking “mmmmm sweets” but then it doesn’t feel full because their are no calories consumed with that taste of sweetness. This confuses your brain. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy’s Wellness Minutes improve your health in 3 minutes a day or less. iTunes Follow me on Twitter @FatGuy

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain that you can’t really catch up on your sleep. Sadly their is no real way to make up for lost sleep by sleeping later on the weekends. A couple of days of sleeping late doesn’t even you out for the week of living on just a few hours of sleep. A better sleep strategy is if you know you are going to sleep less on Friday then try and sleep late on Thursday and Saturday to even it out that way. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. So don’t be like the Fat Guy and wait until Spring to exercise again – embrace the cold and start doing cold weather activities like: indoor exercise classes at the gym, mall walking, indoor swimming, etc. And as the snow begins to fall make a snow man, build a snow fort, shovel your neighbors driveway, etc.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why humans are built for distance running. Almost half a million people competed in marathons and about 90% of those runners have suffered from some sort of training injury. A new book titled Born To Run by Christopher McDougall talks in depth about this and that excites Dr Fitness for a couple of reasons. Number one because it is also a Springsteen song and Number two he too loves to run. According to this book the human body is designed to run long distances. From an evolutionary standpoint that is how we could best hunt for food. We were not as fast as the animals we hunted but we could track them for long distances and wear them down and when they got tired we would kill them and eat them. What makes us good distance runners is our ability to sweat and the length of our toes. The book also talks about the importance of proper footwear when running – thin soled running shoes seem to be better than those heavily padded ones. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why its harder to get in shape after 45. As you age your metabolism slows and a lot of other body functions slow down as well like your maximal oxygen consumption. Because of these natural declines it gets harder and harder to begin a fitness program from scratch and to  maintain an existing program. That’s why our best anti-aging tips are to be active your whole life, maintain a healthy weight and BMI and please don’t smoke. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
