In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite tips on using pepper spray. Pepper spray has been shown to keep you safe when you are in danger. If you are accosted by a person you should aim the spray at their face from 6-8 feet away then run like the Fat Guy is chasing you away from the dangerous situation. You can also use pepper spray when you are walking or running in areas where their might be wild animals.  Fog sprays are not as effective as stream sprays which are more concentrated and tend to work better. Remember the spray is just a means to to give you time to get away and run to safety – it will not permanently disable the attacker or animal.   Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite playground safety tips. Playgrounds are agreat place for a kid to learn about the joy of play but you have to be careful – 15 children die on playgrounds each year and countless others suffer unnecessary injuries. After it rains remember things get slippery and more difficult to balance on. Make sure one child ata time is going down the slide – this is an area where a lot of kids get hurt when one kid goes up the slide the wrong way while another kid is sliding down. Don’t go barefoot – there could be sharp objects buried under the soft ground cover. Watch for splinters along wooden rails. And always keep an eye open for swing people and object – nothing ruins play time faster than a kid getting whacked inthe head by someone on the swings.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy help you prevent some common exercise mistakes. Do you load up on energy bars or sports drinks before or after your workout. Forget about those high calorie things you’re not Lance Armstrong training for the Tour de France. Do you forget to warm up or do what the Fat Guy does and warm up as you go? You might be able to get away with that when you’re young but as you get older you have to warm up. If the only way you modify your strength training workout is by lifting more and more weight, fuggaboutit. There are lots of ways to shake up your weight training routine – take more times per rep, have less rest between reps, hit the muscle group with a different exercise, etc. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite weight loss tips. You have to pre plan things if you are serious about losing weight. That means on the weekend cut up a bunch of veggies that you will throughout the week. It also means knowing what you are having for dinner so you know how much to eat for breakfast and lunch. Write things down – nothing will stop you from overeating if you have no idea how much you’ve already eaten that day. If you can look at your food journal and see that you’ve eaten half your calories by lunch time that means you better put the brakes on for dinner. Losing weight is math. If you don’t keep track of the calories you’re consuming you’ll never see the numbers on the scale get smaller. Get exercise in as much as you can – and make it vigorous. Strolls to the mailbox might be good when you are just starting out but after awhile you have to crank up the intensity. Don’t starve yourself – when you are famished bad things happen (like blowing your diet on one Ben and Jerry fest)  – using healthy low cal snacks to take the edge off those crazy hunger pangs. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain the dangers of peanut allergies. Peanut allergies are sometimes so severe that a person’s airways can become so swollen they can’t breathe. In schools kids with peanut allergies are relegated to a peanut free table in the back of the cafeteria. There may be hope. A doctor (not Dr Fitness) has developed a potential cure for peanut allergies that involves slowly desensitizing a child to peanuts in a hospital setting. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of the most unhealthy foods found at your grocery store. As anyone who has kids knows the breakfast cereal aisle is the danger zone. Most breakfast cereal might as well be put in the candy aisle. Margarine is another food that came along and was supposed to be a healthier choice over butter but since margarine is loaded with trans fats you should stick to butter. Doughnuts and chips are two more items that usually don’t make up a nutritious meal. Sure they taste great and you can indulge once in awhile – I wouldn’t make them part of  your everyday meals. Why The FatGuy Overeats. And Maybe Why You Do Too

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some reasons why you eat too much. I know for a fact I overeat when I eat directly out of a package or use a large plate or bowl. I will eat whatever is in front of me so if someone hands me a bag of chips I will not stop eating until the bag is empty. Every bag is a single serve container to me. Don’t do that put your snakcs in small portion correct bowls and put the rest away. Another reason people overeat is when they deprive themselves from a craving they eventually weaken and gorge themselves on whatever that craving was – usually chocolate related in my case. When it’s cold people tend to eat more as well. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
