Today we dedicated the entire show to put a spotlight on Mount Vernon Presbyterian School (MVPS). They decided to launch a Global Learning Initiative beginning with the 2009-2010 school year. The idea behind the initiative was to give MVPS Middle and Upper School students the opportunity to study an issue that would have a profound impact on their future lives and the global society, and to do so in a manner that was outside the traditional boundaries of the classroom. MVPS wanted to initiate a tradition that the rising senior class would choose the topic of the year-long study. For the initial 2009-2010 initiative the seniors chose The Global Environment as the topic and the year-long study was successfully completed. In the studio we had Brett Jacobsen, Donald Sasso, Addie Placido and Miles Mallory from MVPS as well as Susan McBreairty from the CDC.

For the second Global Learning Initiative for the coming 2010-2011 school year the seniors chose Global Infectious Disease as the topic. MVPS will be partnering with the Centers for Disease Control in this study. This is a first of its kind collaboration for the CDC. MVPS is the first school to have a year long educational program in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control.

CDC experts who are involved worldwide will be visiting MVPS to speak to and dialogue with students on a variety of different topic s concerning global infectious disease. Since CDC also partners with The Carter Center and Emory University, these institutions may join this initiative by providing speakers. MVPS is looking forward to this cooperative effort involving world class institutions located here in Atlanta. To learn more about Mount Vernon Presbyterian School please go to their website www.mountvernonschool.org

Atlanta Business RadioX Launches New Show: Golf Talk with Mike – Business RadioX

November 2, 2010 by admin

Atlanta Business RadioX announced today the launch of a new weekly radio show called Accelerator Avenue. The one hour weekly program features founders, owners and operators of small businesses – who have made it “out of the garage” – as they detail their accomplishments and describe the new challenges they face navigating the acceleration phase of business success. Accelerator Avenue is hosted by Bernie Wolford, President of Buckingham Associates, LLC. The first show airs November 12, 2010.

“While the excitement of start-ups understandably receives much attention, companies in the acceleration phase face predictable challenges if they are to achieve the full potential of the product or service they have created,” explains Wolford. “This program is designed to help provide them with much of the information and resources they need to address those challenges.”

Accelerator Avenue airs each Friday from 2 – 3 p.m. EST. Listeners are able to tune in and listen to the show by clicking on the Listen Live button at acceleratoravenue.businessradiox.com. Free podcasts of each episode will be available for download on Apple’s iTunes store.

Each show will cover topics such as bootstrapping, funding options, market penetration, first generation management and staffing. Companies providing services at this stage of business growth may appear alongside accelerator phase company owners as well as business persons who have successfully passed through this challenging stage.

“Providing guidance and structure for these acceleration phase companies is critical in an economy where large companies continue to reduce costs and conduct headcount reduction,” continues Wolford. “The economy of the future will increasingly rely upon these small emerging growth companies to provide new jobs and fuel growth for the next 20-30 years.”

“Adding Accelerator Avenue to our line-up of already compelling talk radio programs provides yet another valuable resource for our expanding community of listeners,” explains Atlanta Business RadioX Producer Lee Kantor. “Packaging and delivering content via internet radio continues to be an ideal medium for business owners looking for new ways to provide targeted content to preferred audiences in a simple and easy to consume format,”

About Bernie Wolford

Mr. Wolford boasts more than 30 years of experience in the manufacture, distribution and retail of consumer goods and services. Additionally, Mr. Wolford’s experience and skill sets have been provided to the healthcare market: employers, employees, providers and payors, as an extension of productivity improvement and cost reduction services.

Wolford is the President of Buckingham Associates, LLC, the consultancy that he founded in 1999. During that time he has also served in a joint-venture with a private equity investment firm, providing advisory services for numerous privately-owned emerging growth companies.

Prior to founding Buckingham Associates Wolford was employed by the Home Depot where he held the positions of Director of Strategic Business Development/Growth Initiatives and Director of Labor Management/Productivity.

Before joining The Home Depot, Wolford was with Kurt Salmon Associates (KSA), the leading full-service management consulting firm specializing in the manufacture, distribution and retail of consumer goods and services. During his tenure he served such manufacturers as Samsonite, Hartmarx, Liz Claiborne, Pendleton Woolen Mills, and Coach Leather. Later when the firm entered the retail market, he was engaged by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue/Investcorp, Broadway/CHH, Dillard’s, The Home Depot, Lojas Americanas (Brazil), Nordstrom, Gottschalks and Spectra Physics.

Wolford serves on the Board of Directors of several small emerging growth companies, and also serves on the Board of the World Chamber of Commerce. He holds a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from West Virginia University where he serves on the faculty advisory committee.
