Byron Reese/Infinite Progress: How Technology and the Internet Will End Ignorance, Disease, Hunger, Poverty and War

A frequent traveler to destinations rooted in the past, such as Cuba and North Korea, Byron Reese speculates on and writes about what the future of the world will be like. As a regular speaker at international, leading-edge conferences, such as SXSW, NAB, Wolfram Data Summit, IAB, and PICNIC, he delivers talks with the art of a storyteller about history, technology, and the coming golden age of humanity.

Synthesizing history and the advances of technology, Reese makes an extremely compelling case that the future will soon see the end the five main plagues of human existence: ignorance, disease, poverty, hunger, and war. And while he is clearly an optimist, he considers himself a reasoned one and is quick to point out that over the entire span of human history, the optimists have been right virtually all the time.

With this in mind, Byron has outlined our inevitable future in Infinite Progress: How the Internet and Technology Will End Ignorance, Disease, Poverty, Hunger, and War (Greenleaf Book Group, March 2013), one in which readers are sure to come away from inspired and excited about what awaits them.

A native Texan, Reese attained his BA in Economics at Rice University, and went on to create two technology-based businesses that he later sold. He now oversees R&D for Demand Media, a content and social media brand company that operates websites such as eHow and Cracked.com.

Reese currently resides in Austin with his wife and four children.

On this Episode of Meeting Pros:

Meetin Pros

Kelly Jordan Nelson with L.E.D. (Luminocity Entertainment Division)

KELLY NELSON: Founder and Chief Creation Officer L.E.D. Kelly has long been intrigued in working with mediums that create emotional, behavioral, physical, and entertaining links that traverse our lives in work and play.

Kelly’s career began at one of the world’s largest marketing communications design and production agencies, Jack Morton Worldwide. That background served her well as she went on from there to build extensive professional credentials in event design, award-winning creative direction, writing, and production spanning all media.

Working with all types of industries, associations, non-profits and community organizations (e.g. Coca-Cola, Arby’s Inc., TechBridge, Cartoon Network, CNN, United Way,Girl Scouts of America) she developed her own singular, artistic voice.

By the early 1990s, in response to the changing climate in the industry and fueled by the motto, “Do youwant to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great?” she creatively commanded her own course. Kelly used her non-traditional influences from the arts and keen sensitivity to the power ofpop culture to engage audiences worldwide. It’s no wonder she was continually labeled a “Maverick”…long before the term was considered mainstream.

For 19 years the first company she founded, The Maverick Group (TMG), an experience design and marketing agency, provided innovative experience and design solutions unmatched in the industry.

Today, Kelly continues to be a dynamic, passionate champion of alternative thinking and artistic envisioning, always pushing the boundaries of the normal to achieve more engaging results. Kelly’s unique perspective and ability to use creative thinking as a pathway towards strategically motivating behavior has made her a sought-after artistic creator and designer for a wide range mediums and platforms.

Her work has brought her a bevy of awards garnered for creative direction, as well as countless accolades for her unique concepts and use of talent. Now at the top of her game after more than 22 years of creative leadership, Kelly is now busy with her new entertainment design and production agency L.E.D. as well as Luminocity (her illuminated performance art light parade spectacle) – which provides her with a constructive outlet for her ground breaking artistic visioning.

About L.E.D:

L.E.D. (Luminocity Entertainment Division) is a dynamic, full-service, strategy based event and entertainment production company that designs and produces entertainment-driven projects for corporations, associations, not-for-profits, public programs, and private individuals. “Show Me”!  Amy Hentschel is a Show Me Girl!  Born and raised in Missouri, Amy believes that actions speak louder than words.  Drawn to serving seniors at an early age, Amy spent many hours during her high school years volunteering in hospitals and with hospice.  After earning a degree in Communications and Mass Media from the University of Missouri, she took a job with Medicare provider and equipment distributor in Illinois.

After moving to Atlanta and working for a number of years with an assisted living community, Amy began planning a new business that would provide support, advice and resource to the seniors she’d become so attached to.  Senior Provisions is an organization dedicated to assisting seniors and their families in evaluating their needs, and finding solutions to meet those needs, whether in their current home, or in a new environment.  Her services are free to her clients.  She provides expert guidance in the areas of senior living options, adult day programs, skilled nursing options, Alzheimer’s care, non-medical home care, support groups and financial/legal services.

Amy tells us that her business is also her mission.  While she provides high quality professional services, she is also their to minister to the emotional and spiritual needs of her clients.  To that end, she hosts a monthly Caregiver group focused on providing this kind of support and assistance to family caregivers – whether they are hands on with a family member, or supporting from a distance.  Amy’s next Caregiver Meeting will be held this Saturday, February 23, from 10am to 11am, at the Sunrise at Johns Creek located at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road.  Brian Byars, a certified VA claims advisor, will be speaking.  To register for this event, or find out more about Senior Provisions, please call Amy directly at (678) 925-0223, or visit their website at www.myseniorprovisions.com.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.

We welcome Wayne Kidd from the Johns Creek (Georgia) Veterans Association.

Johns Creek Georgia Veterans Association is a relatively new group, organized by veterans and for veterans and has the full support of the village of Johns Creek, Georgia.  The JCVA is moving quickly to establish a Veterans Memorial Walk to recognize military veterans from all eras, increasing awareness within the community of the price paid by military veterans to serve.

The group and the memorial serve as an example of how a small group of individuals, who share a common bond in this case military service, can establish an organization, secure public support, creating veteran recognition in the community.

Great job guys!

Our next guest is Mike Roman.  Mike’s company is Manufacturing Practices, Inc., known as MPI

Manufacturing Practices, Inc. serves the manufacturing and distribution community by assisting them in the selection and

implementation of Enterprise Management Systems (ERP).   MPI originated in the mid-1980’s when Mike Roman, CPIM, joined a small family-owned business performing IT, materials, and operations management.  While there Mike helped to successfully deploy business management software for the organization. As soon as the responsibilities were transferred to a colleague, Mike moved on to help other small and midsize manufacturers maximize the performance of their systems.

MPI clients have included over 60 manufacturers in a wide variety of fields such as steel fabrication, flower and seed, and extruded plastics. The company focuses on providing personal and comprehensive services to small and midsize

companies that are the backbone of the American economy.

Mike and MPI serve as an example of how some military experience and skills can be applied to the corporate world and creating your own business and being part of the community.

Wayne Kidd and Mike Roman are Vietnam Veterans.  Thank you for your service and Welcome Home!
