Try this natural cure for snoring. Sleep on your side. This works especially well for thinner people. When you sleep on your back you are more likely to cause the breathing problem that causes snoring so make the move to sleeping on your side to see if this helps you snore less. It doesn’t matter which side you sleep on either – left or right side worked equally as well.

Guest Post: Looking for a third wind? Try your iPod

May 5, 2011 by angishields

Your feet hit the ground in perfect rhythm with the music.  Your once-sore knees and ankles somehow move faster than you thought possible.   There’s no question that running with the perfect set of tunes can make you feel like you’re performing better, but is there an actual science behind that feeling?

Many researchers are saying yes.

Evidence from a Brunel University study suggests that music can “improve the ‘feeling states’ of exercisers, helping them to derive much greater pleasure from the task.”  And who doesn’t need a bit more pleasure when they’re running?

Beyond just feeling great, the study also suggests that the right music can help you perform better.   It can enhance an athlete’s endurance by 15% and can also provide motivation by helping to “block out the little voice in your brain telling you its time to quit.”

But, as you might have guessed, not all songs will work the same way.  It’s all about the tempo.

As you might imagine, fast paced, high energy songs can be the most helpful for runners.  These songs help you kick it into high gear by serving as the ultimate pace-setter.  Your body naturally moves to the rhythm of the music, and which will help you maintain or improve your endurance and speed.

High tempo songs aren’t the only ones that are good for working out.  Slow-to-medium paced songs are helpful as well.   These songs are a key ingredient to a more productive warmup and cooldown period.  Coupled with powerful lyrics, medium paced songs are also ideal for a person lifting weights.

While finding a great tempo and effective lyrics can literally move you, working out with music won’t be quite perfect until you go back to the basics: find songs that speak to you.  In other words, listen to songs that you like or find interesting.  A song, artist, or genre that doesn’t inspire you will do little to help your performance.   While Kanye West’s “Stronger” may be considered the “best workout song ever” (according to Gold’s Gym), you may find more success with “Dog Days are Over” by Florence and the Machine.

What’s playing on the gym radio or on the treadmill TV doesn’t matter when you can build your own playlist, customized for your pace with your hand-picked songs, and no commercials.  Who can beat you when you’ve got a team of hard-hitting, inspiring teammates in your iPod?

And if a decrease in pain and an increase in performance aren’t enough, there’s an unexpected benefactor in all of this: your brain.  The part of your brain that processes music, the frontal lobe, is also associated with higher mental functioning, planning the future, and thinking abstract thoughts.   When you exercise with the right music, your frontal lobe is working out too.

According to ABC News, “this bit of mental stimulation works for the brain like exercise works for the body. The more you do it, the more those muscles — including the ones between the ears — stay in tune and function more efficiently.”

It’s time to make your playlist, lace up your sneakers, turn up the volume, and have the best workout for both your mind and your body.

Matt Venables and Julie Herman are amateur runners and founders of jog.fm, the premier workout music recommendation engine.  The website suggests music and playlists with a tempo that is perfectly suited to your exercise pace. But Matt and Julie see jog.fm as far more than just music recommendations. It is a motivational tool aimed at getting the average person off the couch and working out.

Lion HospiceSusanne Sperry has first hand experience witnessing the benefits of hospice care. Both of her grandmothers were under the care of hospice while her grandfathers were not. Having seen both sides of the end of life stage she decided to pursue degrees in Social Sciences and Healthcare Administration. She is now the Administrator of Lion Hospice.  According to Susanne, Lion Hospice recognizes that the dying process is a part of the normal process of living and focuses on enhancing the quality of remaining life. As such, she takes great pride in helping seniors and their families navigate all phases of their hospice experience.

Lori Sulak has always had a soft place in her heart seniors.  Growing up, she had a very strong relationship with her grandparents that led her to become a caregiver after she graduated from high school. Twenty two years ago, she entered the senior housing industry. After spending time in skilled nursing, independent living, assisted living and most recently electronic monitoring, she decided she wanted to work with the frailest of the frail at Lion Hospice. Susanne and Lori can be reached via phone at 817-268-2145.  Their email addresses are as follows: lsulak@lionhospice.com and ssperry@lionhospice.com.  Visit Lion Hospice on the web at www.lionhospice.com.

Meier, AnthonyAnthony Meier, MPT, is the Center Manager for the Decatur Irvin Select Physical Therapy clinic in Decatur, Georgia.  He received his Master of Science in Physical Therapy from University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1999, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio in 1993.  After his undergraduate work, Anthony took a job in product planning and inventory control.  After a number of years, he realized that this job wasn’t where he wanted to spend his career.  He started volunteering at a physical therapy clinic, and decided to take classes at Georgia State to become a physical therapist.  After completing his graduate work, Anthony took a position at Select Physical Therapy.  After 12 years, I think it’s safe to say Anthony has found his calling.  Anthony was also joined in the studio today by Venika Benjamin, who serves as the Administrative Service Manager for Select Physical Therapy for the Atlanta metro area.  To reach Anthony, call the clinic at 404-297-0821, send him an email at ameier@hq.novacare.com, or visit their website at www.selectphysicaltherapy.com.

Moore, MeredithHaving hosted many radio shows, Meredith Moore is no stranger to the studio.  Meredith’s primary business is Moore & Associates, an Atlanta-based Wealth Management firm.  She tells us the firm specializes in coordinating the work of the many advisors, insurance agents, accountants, etc. that are often involved in managing an individual’s financial affairs.  She also specializes in exit strategies for small business owners.  Today, Meredith had a different topic on her mind.  She is also a board member of an Atlanta non-profit called Kate’s Club.  This organization empowers children and teens facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. By creating friendships with kids and young adults that share the experience, Kate’s Club guides children through their grief journey in a comfortable, safe, and uplifting setting.

Kate’s Club has a unique event coming up to help raise money to support it’s efforts.  The event is a 2k and 10k race in Grant Park on May 21 at 8:15AM.  The name of the event is GeneRacetion, and is a joint effort with Senior Citizens Services of Atlanta.  This event will bring together both young and old in an effort to spotlight the need for guidance for these children that have been impacted by the tragic loss of a parent or sibling.  If you would like more information, or would like to register for this event, either as a participant or a sponsor, call Meredith at 770-587-0281, or visit the event website at www.generacetion.org.

Are you a back sleeper, a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper? How you sleep can be affecting your health and the amount of sleep you’re getting each night.

  • Stomach Sleeper – Don’t sleep on your stomach – this can cause neck and back pain and keep you up all night tossing and turning to comfortable. It is especially dangerous for you if you are overweight and you snore or suffer from sleep apnea.
  • Back Sleeper – Sleeping on your back is okay. It can prevent back and neck pain if you prop your head correctly with pillows. It can help with reflux as long as your head is higher than your stomach.
  • Side Sleeper – Sleeping on your side is optimal. Left or right doesn’t really matter. With the proper pillow fluff you can sleep through the night easily without hurting your neck and back.

This grilled chicken skewer recipe affirms the belief that everything tastes better on a skewer. Grab some chicken chunk it up. Also chunk up some zucchini, onion, red pepper and some naval oranges. Remember that before you throw skewers on the grill to soak them in water for a long time so they don’t burn up. Oil up your griull and cook the skewers for a few minutes on each side until they are done. Serve over a brown rice and you are done.

Chris Cason, wrote the the book A Guide to Tea. That book got John Paul Lee’s attention and together they founded Tavalon Tea. Chris’ passion for team made him the perfect choice to be the sommelier for Tavalon Tea.The mission for Tavalon has always been to source only the finest teas from around the world and to create unique blends based on the American palate through in depth research. Right now tea is the number 7 selling in the US and Tavalon wants tea to become number 1 (or at least number 6).

On today’s interview Chris shared some great recipes and tips on making iced tea, sangria with tea and other healthy beverages. Tavalon makes awesome blends of loose leaf tea that are healthy and delicious.  Most tea you drink comes from the tea dust from the bottom of the tea barrels – Tavalon only uses the top shelf stuff and you can taste the difference. Go to their website www.tavalon.com and browse around you will see teas that you have never seen before.  Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy think Tavalon Tea is #1 – that’s why they are the official tea of our radio show.
