What’s the Biggest Underlying Fear Which Causes Imposter Syndrome?, with Kris Kelso, Author of Overcoming The Imposter

John Ray: [00:00:01] And hello everyone. This is John Ray with Business RadioX. And I’m here with Kris Kelso. And Kris is the author of Overcoming the Impostor. Kris, my question for you is, what’s the biggest underlying fear which causes the impostor syndrome?

Kris Kelso: [00:00:21] John, the underlying fear behind impostor syndrome is the fear of being exposed for what you are. It’s the fear that people think more of you than is really there, and that they’re going to figure out who you really are, what you really are, and then the jig is going to be up, that somehow you’re going to be  discredited or disqualified, and things are not going to go well for you if people figure out who you really are. The irony of that is that impostor syndrome makes you fear vulnerability. It makes you afraid of being honest about yourself. But the cure for impostor syndrome, the antidote, if you will, is vulnerability, being vulnerable, opening up about who you are is the very thing that will help you overcome impostor syndrome. So, the thing you fear is exactly the thing you need to overcome the impostor.

Kris Kelso, Author and CEO, The Kelso Group

Kris Kelso is a keynote speaker for leadership conferences, corporate events, universities, and has been both guest and host on television and radio programs. He is the author of Overcoming The Impostor: Silence Your Inner Critic and Lead with Confidence.

Trained and certified as an executive coach, Kris has worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, business owners, and their leadership teams. He is an advisor and instructor at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center, is a Facilitator / Coach with The Alternative Board, and is a contributing writer for the Nashville Business Journal.

Kris has founded multiple companies and has served on the boards of directors of several non-profit organizations. He is an active member of Cornerstone Nashville, where he serves, teaches, and coaches other leaders. He lives with his wife and three teenaged sons in a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee.

BRX Pro Tip: One Big Thing

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with Business RadioX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, a good discipline in terms of planning, staying on top of your business, keeping it between the ditches, you’ve suggested on more than one occasion is to focus on one big thing. Periodically, some time frame – I don’t know, quarterly or something like that. But let’s talk about that a minute.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:26] Sure. Why don’t you try this experiment this quarter, just set one goal this quarter that you want to achieve. One thing, that’s it. Shut down everything else. Focus on one big thing and just relentlessly pursue that one goal. That’s it. Don’t get distracted by other opportunities until that goal is accomplished. Add those opportunities. Write them down on some back burner list. Revisit it at the end of the quarter after you accomplish your main goal. But don’t let them suck up your time or energy now. They’re going to wait.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:59] We’re going to focus like a laser beam on this one goal. And then, that’s how we’re going to think about it. That’s all the team is going to think about. That’s all. Every person you’re going to talk to, you’re going to tell them about this. There’s one big thing you’re going to achieve. And let’s see if this experiment works. Let’s see how far you get along in achieving that goal. Focus on one thing, put your mind to it, and relentlessly pursue it until you get there and see what happens. You’ll be amazed.

BRX Pro Tip: Regular Accountability Meetings

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with Business RadioX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, you are a big fan, a real proponent, of regular accountability meeting. Say more about that.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:13] Yeah. I think it’s important, accountability is really a critical element on your growth of your company or your practice or whatever you’re working on. Holding yourself accountable, holding the team accountable, is really important. Because if you don’t, then things start slipping. You start tolerating kind of worse and worse behavior and worse and worse results, and then you’re not going to be able to grow. So, I think it’s important to have regular accountability meetings, no excuses. Where are we at? What’s getting in the way. What do we have to tweak? What’s going well? What should we be doing more of? What should we be doing less of? Ask those questions. Get the lay of the land. What’s real, not what you hope it to be.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:56] You might have gone into something with the best intentions. But if it’s not working, then stop doing it. If it is working, do more of it. And hold each other accountable without really kind of blaming. This shouldn’t be a blame game. This should be, “Look, this is working. This isn’t. I still love you. Everything’s still good. But we just got to be better.” And if you can do this predictably and reliably, you’re going to get better results in less time, as you like to say, Stone.

Stone Payton: [00:01:25] I do like to say that. And I think in these exchanges, it’s all about the what, why, and how. Leave the who out of the conversation. That’s almost irrelevant to your point about blame. And I do think you will consistently produce better results in less time if you can exercise the discipline to focus on the why and how in these conversations.
