John-Mackey

CEO Exclusive was live at the Conscious Capitalism 2019 Annual Conference in Phoenix! Listen to our interview with Whole Foods CEO John Mackey below!

BJohnMackeytreeLrg0John Mackey, co-founder and co-CEO of Whole Foods Market, has led the natural and organic grocer as it has grown from a single store in Austin, Texas, founded in 1978, to an $11 billion Fortune 300 company, and a top U.S. supermarket with more than 340 stores and 70,000 Team Members worldwide.

While devoting his career to helping shoppers satisfy their lifestyle needs with high quality natural and organic foods, Mackey has also focused on building a more conscious way of doing business. For 15 consecutive years, FORTUNE magazine has included Whole Foods Market on its “100 Best Companies to Work For” list.

Mackey has been the visionary for many successful programs at the core of Whole Foods Market. He founded Whole Planet Foundation to help end poverty in developing nations; he launched the Local Producer Loan Program to help local farmers and food producers expand their businesses; he created the Global Animal Partnership to set standards for farm animal treatment; and he laid the foundation for the company’s Health Starts Here initiative, which encourages health and wellness among customers and Team Members.

He has been recognized for his work over the years by being named Ernst & Young’s “United States Entrepreneur of the Year,” Institutional Investor’s “Best CEO in America,” Barron’s “World’s Best CEO,” MarketWatch’s “CEO of the Year,” FORTUNE’s “Businessperson of the Year,” and Esquire’s “Most Inspiring CEO,” among many others.

A strong believer in free market principles, Mackey co-founded the Conscious Capitalism Movement to challenge business leaders to rethink why their organizations exist, and to acknowledge their roles in the interdependent global marketplace. He recently co-authored “Conscious Capitalism, Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business” to boldly defend and re-imagine capitalism while encouraging others to implement a way of doing business that is grounded in ethical consciousness.

Mackey cut his pay to $1 in 2006 and continues to work for Whole Foods Market out of a passion to see the business realize its potential for deeper purpose, for the joy of leading a great company, and to answer the call to service he feels in his heart.

“Blueprint 2019 – Session 4”
Hosted by Blue Ridge – Learn more here: https://blueridgeglobal.com/

MikeShuttheadshotMike Shutt serves as Purchasing Manager with United Distributors, the largest beverage alcohol wholesaler in both Georgia and Alabama. With two members of the fourth generation of the Hertz family involved in leadership roles, United is one of the 2-3% of family businesses that are able to successfully transition beyond the third generation.

Through the ’80s and ’90s, United made a staggering 12 acquisitions throughout Georgia, providing broad statewide distribution coverage for its spirit and wine brands. United also broke into the domestic beer market by partnering with the Coors Brewing Company, Miller Brewing, and Heineken. In the mid-1980s, in order to encourage continuous growth and welcome new opportunities, United moved its headquarters to its current location in Smyrna, GA.

This facility allowed United to continue its warehouse and delivery consolidation efforts across the state. The Smyrna location was also critical when United purchased the distribution rights for the Miller Brewing Company in Atlanta, which nearly doubled the size of its beer distribution business.

Today, United conducts its Georgia operations at this location, as well as at warehouse and delivery locations in Savannah and Albany. United has since expanded into Alabama where it operates as United-Johnson Brothers of Alabama. Connect with Mike Shutt on LinkedIn and learn more about United Distributors here: https://udiga.com/

JimByrnesheadshotJim Byrnes is the CEO of Blue Ridge where he brings a proven track record in growing profitable application and consulting businesses. Prior to joining Blue Ridge, Jim served as CEO of M4 Global Solutions, consisting of three independent operating companies: Changepoint, Uniface. and Lochbridge.  Prior to M4, he spent more than 11 years at Infor, where he held multiple executive positions including SVP of Process Manufacturing and Wholesale Distribution and EVP of Global Consulting Services. He previously ran the US operations of Ability as President of the supply chain management solutions provider. Jim has also served the Chief Operations Officer of Impact Innovations Group, a consulting services company focused on delivery chain management. He entered the University of Arizona in 1992 and began studying business and accounting and considered joining his grandfather’s accounting firm.

Ultimately, Dustin’s coaching experiences lead him to the epiphany that he wanted to work educating Tucson’s youth thus inspiring him to change his major to Education.  While completing his degree in education at the University of Arizona he continued working with students and the community in Flowing Wells 21st Century after-school programs.  Dustin described his involvement in the program as, “truly the best way to get first-hand teaching experience.”

Dustin began his career teaching elementary education in Tucson. During his tenure, several accomplished leaders and administrators mentored Dustin and encouraged him to pursue his passion for education and explore his natural ability to lead and inspire students. Dustin followed his heart and decided to become an administrator and enrolled in the Northern Arizona University program in Tucson where he successfully completed a Master’s in Education.

Upon the completion of the program, Dustin accepted a position as Assistant Director of a Native American Charter school called Ha:san Preparatory & Leadership School. In his first year as A.D., the school’s AIMS scores showed a 30% combined increase in the areas of reading and writing and an increase of 8% in mathematics. During his time at Ha:san, he truly learned about the beautiful culture of the Tohono O’odham people and will forever be grateful that the community embraced his leadership.

Dustin has traveled full circle and most recently taught 6th-grade math at Mansfeld Middle School in the Tucson Unified School District.  His passion for Public Education has energized him to take the next step in his life. Interview with the “Average Mohamed” real name “Mohamed Amin Ahmed”

Mark: Not only America but countries in Europe and in most places around the world we have all felt the wrath of The Taliban and their bloodthirsty and horrific murders done in the name of “Islam”.

My special guest today is “A Worthy Gentleman”, a Semolina immigrant living in Minnesota.

He is married and has four children.  He has owned businesses and is now a Manager for a local gas Company.

Mohammed has a diverse background that includes supporting the Primary election of a Muslim woman running for Congress. He has also had a speaking engagement at the national conference for Global Ties US in Washington, DC.   Today he was speaking to students at Alta Vista High School in South Tucson.  Your website is www.averagemohamed.com which he uses to dissuade youth from joining the Taliban by showing them, in cartoon form, what really happens when someone joins the Taliban or other similar organizations. Apparently, the site went viral and has had a huge impact.

Mohamed immigrated to the States 20 years ago and has been in both Civic and Corporate Worlds. He understands completely what Terrorism does to world business.  At the onset of the 911 Crisis, he joined “The Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism” and is still the Chapter President for Minnesota.

Mohamed’s Counter Terrorism Mantra is “It takes an Idea, to defeat an idea”, which is the Mantra of the organization that passionately promotes ideas of “Counter Terrorism” through the use of popular culture…and that’s how “Average Mohamed was born.

In view of the fact that these radical Muslims kill people who in the past have created messages through cartoons, ‘Average Mohamed’ stories are portrayed in cartoon format all over the web and in particular YouTube. In a Nutshell, www.averagemohamed.com was created to talk plainly to humanity – to all.

Issues of race, religion, and “fitting in” affect all of us, especially our youth, so Mohamed’s thought – it’s time we talk about them. The solution to so many of these issues is simple: dialogue. All-too-often, silence leads to misunderstanding and extreme views.

Mohamed waited for a straightforward, logical program that would help youth to understand their unique contribution to society, and appreciate others with different ethnicities, races, and belief systems. Apparently while waiting, and waiting, and waiting, it dawned on him that an average guy can spark these dialogues. If it is an average guy who espouses hate, intolerance, and extremism, all of us average folks need to speak up and challenge this narrative. A fairly logical perspective to the topic!

Mohamed says, “our goal is to give average parents, kids and clergy talking points to counter falsehood propagated by extremists, racists and others who promote intolerance. We hope to share love of country, culture, and democracy with children across the world.”

The organization that brought Mohammed to Tucson is the Southern Arizona Council for International Visitors, under the leadership of the Executive Director for SAZCIV, Pat Watson. SAZCIV is a non -profit that brings quality speakers on relevant subject matter to the community every two months  The Core purpose for SAZCIV is the International Visitor Leadership Program which emanates from the Education and Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of State.
