The founder of Berkley Development (which he named after his daughter in 2016), Mike Cohn personally works on every project we undertake. He’s a hands-on, heads-up leader whose characteristically “active sense of calm” has become a hallmark of how we do business—high-energy, high-capacity, high-confidence, but never high-strung or high-pressure.

A co-founder of Lennar Commercial (a Miami, FL-based subsidiary of Lennar Corporation, which sold to a private equity firm in 2015), former Executive VP at Cousins Properties in Atlanta, and Senior Managing Director at Faison & Associates, Mike’s career has spanned more than 15 million square feet of projects—including nationwide platforms of retail, office and mixed-use properties stretching from California to Florida and Maine, and valued well in excess of $2B.

He holds a BBA with high distinction in Accounting and Finance from Emory University as well as a Juris Doctor degree with honors from the University of Florida College of Law.

When he’s not collaborating with our partners, he serves as a member of several non-profit boards—including the University of Florida Real Estate Advisory Board, ULI Commercial and Retail Development Product Council (Gold), and the ICSC and GA Bar members. He’s also a regular guest lecturer at the Goizuetta School of Business (Emory), the Warrington College of Business (University of Florida) and the Kenan-Flagler School of Business (University of North Carolina).

Smart Eye Technology was founded in January 2018 by Dexter Caffey. Through his firm, Caffey Investment Group, Mr. Caffey has spent the past 20 years working with major publicly traded U.S. companies. During this time, he helped institutional clients access financial platforms to hedge their portfolio risk and to reduce cost.

While on a business trip to Israel in the fall of 2017, Mr. Caffey was speaking with a cybersecurity professional and noticed he could see every application on the phone of that individual. He thought to himself, “What if we could create software for documents and devices that use ‘continuous identification’ that will shut off for any unauthorized ‘iris’ or ‘face’ viewing that document or screen?” Mr. Caffey immediately connected with an Israeli biometrics technology firm for the creation of this software.

Dexter Caffey founded an Alternative Investment firm in 1998 at the age of 25 and responsible for bringing major publicly traded companies to the firm. He founded Smart Eye Technology in January 2018 and built key strategic relationships with decision makers in corporate America.

As President and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Kyle Waide oversees the distribution of nearly 70 million pounds of food and grocery products each year through a network of 600 local and regional partner nonprofit organizations that feed those in need across 29 Georgia counties. Prior to being named CEO in June of 2015, Waide served for three years as the Food Bank’s Vice President of Partner Operations, leading the organization to record-breaking years of food distribution to the hungry. Through Waide’s collaborative efforts to improve distribution best practices, the Food Bank dramatically increased the nutritional quality of its product offerings, including fresh produce. Currently the Food Bank distributes more than 14 million pounds of produce each year. I began competing in pageants at the age of 12 as a hobby, but it quickly grew into a much bigger purpose. The pageant system, unlike the silly Toddlers and Tiaras concept, helps promote confidence, stage presence, awareness of culture and life and open my world to many new lifelong friends. The pageant systems in which I participated, involved young girls and women of every background, culture, size, shape and culture, to develop skills that will grow and develop them into amazing young adults and set the foundation for their educational and career futures.  

The focus is on developing the inside of a person.  The outside is just incidental.  True beauty is felt, not seen. 

My mom, Pam Henley Johnson Knox, owned and operated a woman-owned business for over 35 years, employing up to 45 people. Her focus was to help individuals with life challenges, those plagued by alcohol and drug abuse, criminal activities, behavioral issues, to get on their feet so they became contributors to society, not victims. 

Together, we are working to ensure our organization, Heels with Heart, can be a bridge for young women into a fuller and more productive life. We offer pageant coaching, makeup and wardrobe advise and are directing a state-wide pageant in December in Tempe for ages 4-24.   

Volunteering and helping others are a big part of what we do in the pageant systems and promote in our business.  You can never truly know where some else has walked until you spend some time working with those less fortunate or individuals with life challenges.  In small ways, like blessing bags where we give the homeless food, supplies and small gifts to serving meals at shelters, supporting other nonprofits, walking or running for a cause, all of these events help me to see the world from a broader perspective, not just from my point of view.

As an osteopathic physiatrist, I am often asked “What is that?”  Despite my cryptic job title, I feel fortunate to have found a career about which I am passionate.   The next question I get is how I got into the field.   After graduating with a degree in Biology from University of Colorado, Boulder, I secured a job in sales, but I felt like something was missing.  I returned to school, and at the age of 30 I began my journey in medicine.  When researching my options, I found Osteopathic Medicine’s philosophy and holistic approach to be a perfect fit.  I graduated from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2001 and went on to specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or “Physiatry” (pronounced fizz-eye-uh-tree). Physiatry is a medical specialty that is not as well known.  However, after doing several medical school rotations in the field, I realized how important the field of rehabilitation medicine was in helping people regain mobility and function following an illness or injury.  I moved to Chicago where I did my Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.   

In 2006, I moved to Tucson, which I found to be a wonderful community that I wanted to contribute to.  I worked as a physiatrist in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital setting for a number of years where I treated patients with stroke, orthopedic injuries, brain injury and spinal cord injury.  In January of 2018, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to take over an outpatient physiatry practice for a very talented local physiatrist who was retiring.  Her philosophy and treatment style were unique and quite similar to mine.  We both felt “the stars aligned” just so.

Brian moved to Tucson in 1992 from Southern California to open the first Chuy’s with two partners in June of 1992.

Our first location was at Wilmot and Speedway which became quite successful relatively swiftly, so I set down roots. I bought out one of my partners in 1995 and took over his interest in our 22nd and Kolb where I have been ever since. He went on to open the Jerry Bob’s restaurants here locally. 

I met my wife Diane in May of 1994 and we married three years later. She too has a background in the service industry, which is important as she understands much of what I go through.  

I started in the industry back in the early 80’s as a server working my way through college in  Northern California. After leaving California to attend college at the University of Houston, I joined the management team of Jeremiah’s Prime Rib and Seafood Restaurants who were seeking qualified personnel. While working for Jeremiah’s, I transferred from Houston, to Huntington Beach, CA. to Reno, NV. and then Palm Springs, CA. Along my journey, I worked with one of the originators of Chuy’s and he eventually asked if I cared to come on board which I did in the summer of ’89.

I’m 20 years old and a Junior at the University of Arizona. I’m originally from Douglas, AZ and moved to Tucson for school. I’m currently the 2018 National American Miss Arizona. I have started my own organization called Project Happiness which promotes happiness through student leadership, community service, and volunteerism.

My goal is to help students identify a need in their community and give them the tools and resources they need in order to develop and execute a plan to help their community through a service project. Personally, Project Happiness puts on a back to school drive. Last school year 1,000 supplies were donated to schools in Douglas AZ. This year project happiness donated more supplies. We collected and donated 2,802 school supplies, backpacks, and reading books to all 5 elementary schools in the Douglas Unified School District and to the Douglas Public Library.  

I also take a passion to be a motivational speaker, and plan on speaking at serval school assemblies about project happiness and have the students participate in a service project themselves.

Steve Kirson was born in Detroit, Michigan, was raised in Connecticut, and after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in 1986, worked as a Human Resources professional for a major defense contractor in Connecticut with a broad range of responsibilities including employee benefits. He moved south and got out of the cold when he attended Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, where he graduated cum laude in 1992, the year he moved to Atlanta and was admitted to practice law in Georgia. Mr. Kirson practiced law with a national labor and employment firm where he had extensive alternate dispute resolution experience, and applies his experience to the employment and benefits issues affecting domestic relations cases, often involving mediation and as well as trial. Before practicing family law, Mr. Kirson was a series 7 licensed financial advisor with PaineWebber, which was acquired by UBS. David Henriksen joined Giving Company in March of 2015 as President and CEO.  Giving Company is a global faith and family media network serving millions of people around the world. As a non-profit, Giving Company is committed to supporting vulnerable children in some of the world’s toughest places. Prior to joining Giving Company, he was the President and CEO of Nextech Systems in Tampa, FL – a private equity backed software company providing clinical and mobile solutions for elective healthcare.

Prior to NexTech, he spent nearly fifteen years as a senior executive in Healthcare Information Technology – including President of the Healthcare Information Solutions business at Carestream Health, Senior Vice President/General Manager at McKesson Corporation, and VP/GM at General Electric Healthcare.

Her most well-known business is the regional internet service provider Dakotacom.net, which she owned and operated for over eight years. During her time there, she orchestrated the acquisition of the DSL segment of a large local internet service provider, AZStarnet. She also secured long-term contracts with big names such as University of Arizona, Canyon Ranch, Krebs Engineers, and Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. Before selling Dakotacom.net she earned two Copper Cactus Awards for Best Place to Work and the Business Growth Award.

Before joining BBB, Crim was the Director of Sales for Southern Arizona at Cox Business Arizona, in this role she developed and maintained strategic relationships with community outreach partners, set strategy of capital investment for Cox Business network’s downtown expansion, and led the sales team in the Southern Arizona marketplace.

Crim has lived all over the country while working for Baxter Healthcare for 15 plus years but has been in Tucson for 25 years. She loves the Southern Arizona community and has served on several different non-profit boards. Currently she serves as Chair of La Frontera Behavior Health and as Chair of “Woman at the Top” one of the largest Tucson’s Women’s Business Groups. Throughout the years Crim has also served on the boards of Make A Wish AZ, Junior Achievement, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and served as a Small Business Commissioner for the city of Tucson.

The recent re-launch of BBB’s Charity Review to the So AZ non-profit community on March 1, 2018, has been well embraced by our community and a critical resource for wise giving!

Sarah McCraren is CEO and President of McCraren Compliance and is a Tucson native with a strong sense of community. Sarah spent many years in the corporate finance world specializing in the operational analysis, measurement and accountability systems, project management and software implementations. However, Sarah wanted to do work which was meaningful and would positively impact her community. She found that saving lives and reducing injuries through comprehensive safety programs fit that bill. Jeremy Neis is an Investment Advisor with Retirement Evolutions and a small business operator fueled by the desire to enrich the life experience. He grew up in the Chicago area and chased the sun to get a degree at the University of Arizona in human and organizational communications. After doing so, he returned to Illinois where over the next 15 years he would find joy in co-launching and growing a technology solutions company and establishing a family.
