This episode of “The Dr Dionne Show” features three courageous women who represent “a forgotten growing segment of the population”. They are young women who unexpectedly lost their husbands but have continued to work and take care of their families while addressing their grief. Their stories are life lessons for women in relationships, and for employers and friends who desire to “support” women who have lost their husbands.

HOST: Dr. Dionne Wright Poulton

Dionne Wright Poulton, Ph.D., is an HR and Leadership Consultant, Educator, Author, Speaker, and Owner of Poulton Consulting Group, LLC, an HR and leadership consulting business specializing in diversity and inclusion, equity, bias, intercultural communication, adult learning, adult behavior, and conflict mediation. Since its inception in 2004, Poulton Consulting Group has worked with a wide range of diverse clients in the U.S. and Canada including many in the San Francisco tech and digital marketing industry; K-12 schools and higher education; and many corporate and service industries. Poulton Consulting Group is also a government-approved business for local, state and federal level contracts.

Dr. Wright Poulton is author of the acclaimed book “It’s Not Always Racist…but Sometimes It Is” which is an extension of her PhD dissertation at the University of Georgia where she researched the racial biases and assumptions of teachers. She is also a certified K-12 teacher whose work is inspired by her 16 years of cumulative experiences as a high school teacher and university instructor in public and private institutions in Canada and the United States. Additionally, Dr. Wright Poulton has earned professional degrees from San Francisco State University (M.A.), the University of Toronto/OISE (B.Ed.), and from Rice University (B.A.) in Houston, TX where she was a former NCAA Division I track and field scholarship athlete.

In 2014, Profiles In Diversity Journal identified Dr. Wright Poulton as “a woman to watch.” She has presented social commentary in print media in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, as well as on numerous radio shows including CBS Radio stations in Atlanta, GA and on Tavis Smiley’s Radio Show. “The Dr Dionne Show” debuted in 2016 on Business RadioX with a focus on smart dialogue about diversity, leadership, and behavior in the workplace and beyond.

Dr. Wright Poulton is originally from Toronto, Canada and is a former member of Canada’s National Track and Field Team. She currently lives with her husband and two daughters in Snellville, GA.

Hannah Hanson & Erica Oliveira/Global Mission Fellows

Global Mission Fellows is a 2-year mission service opportunity and leadership development program for young adults 20-30 to engage in social justice ministries. They offer two tracks: US-2 for U.S. participants to serve in the U.S., and International. They have grown from their first US-2 class in 1951 of 43 participants to currently having 108 participants. Fellows come from all over the world and serve all over the world. They are currently from 32 countries and serving in 24.

The Global Mission Fellows program grew from the historic US-2 and Mission Intern programs. They celebrate their dedicated alumni and their more than 60-year legacy of young adults in mission.

US-2 Program since 1951: Immediately after World War II, the Methodist Board of Missions set up programs that allowed young adults to spend three years volunteering in Africa, Japan, and Latin America. The US-2 program, which was modeled after these programs, began as an “us too” appeal to have young adults serve in the United States. It was established in 1951 by the Women’s Division as an opportunity for young women to serve.
Over time, the US-2 program came under the umbrella of Global Ministries and became available for young men as well as women. In 2000, the program celebrated its 50th anniversary with a retrospective article in their bi-monthly missionary publication New World Outlook.

Mission Intern Program since 1977: The Mission Intern program was designed to give young adults an opportunity to serve both abroad and in the United States. Ruth Harris, one of its first directors, said: “Our approach was to let the Third World teach us, instead of the other way around.” The 1977 class of Mission Interns contributed 18 essays as curriculum for the 1979 mission study on “Human Rights and the International Order,” and they also helped to teach the study. A New World Outlook article from 1987 celebrated the program’s 10th anniversary. Since then, the program has expanded to provide service opportunities for young adults who are not from the United States. Today, the program reflects Global Ministries’ commitment to sending missionaries “from everywhere to everywhere”.

Tiffany Krumins and Steven Julian

Shark Tank winner Tiffany Krumins and co-host Steven Julian discuss the future of Ava the Elephant, the product that Tiffany pitched on the first-ever episode of ABC’s Shark Tank.

TIFFANY KRUMINS

Tiffany Krumins, the first Shark Tank winner, is an Atlanta native and the inventor of Ava the Elephant, a child friendly dispenser that takes the fear out of taking medicine. Called a modern day Mary Poppins, Tiffany has gone from nanny to entrepreneur, and has seen her passion to help children grow into a business that is now known and loved all over the world.

Tiffany’s success story began when she was a nanny to a little boy with Down’s syndrome who was terrified of “medicine time”. To help alleviate his fear, she constructed an animal made of fabric, sponges, a store bought medicine dropper, and a recordable sound chip from a greeting card – and Ava the Elephant was born. Knowing that she would need to find a way to produce her invention, Tiffany began searching the internet and found a casting call on Craigslist that said: “Do you have the next million dollar idea but don’t have the funding to make it happen?” She immediately applied for the casting and was invited to be on the first ever episode of Shark Tank.

Her story has been a roller coaster ride as she went from being on a national TV show and receiving $50,000 to start her company, to learning just months later that she had thyroid cancer. While working from a hospital bed, she struggled through the growing pains of building a business and fighting cancer.

Tiffany’s appearance on Shark Tank and the success following continues to provide countless opportunities for her and her brand. Her story has received unparalleled exposure. Some of her more notable appearances and acknowledgements:

  • Follow-up appearances on Shark Tank on four separate occasions
  • Sharing her story and her product on the Dr. Oz Show to a national audience of millions of viewers
  • Nominated for the Top 50 Mompreneurs by Babble.com
  • Keynote speaker for Disney Social Media Mom’s
  • Her story has been featured on Forbes.com, Entrepreneur.com, TVGuide.com, YoungEntrepreneur.com, MomInventors.com and many other online and print publications
