Caring for Employees Through Self Care E27

Culture is a hard thing to measure but that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be an area that companies continue to focus priority on. It might be hard to track culture with metrics (and things like self care for employees) but it is possible and your company will see the long term shifts in the revenue, retention, and overall company improvements when focusing on company culture.

Kathleen and Neville have such amazing backgrounds and experiences in the space of self care, meditation, and human centered leadership support that it led the conversation to a deeper level. Self care and mental health directly relates and connects to the culture of the company and the employees that work there.

Culture is the web that connects and fuels everything that is part of the company; feelings, values, mission, people, and more. We discussed the need to create a visual map or web that might show this, but even then we might be able to add in everything that matters in culture.
Retention
Success
Customer support
Balance

There are companies out there that are successfully starting to incorporate self care and mental health into the workplace (such as Banner Health and EvolvedMD), but we are hoping that others can start to find these ways as well.

If you are searching for a conversation about bringing self care into the workplace and hearing about the importance behind it- this is your podcast. Kathleen’s company focuses on growing culture through supporting the employees with the self care journey (we talk about the science behind this too). Neville is an executive with his company but very focused on the deeper levels of people and shows this through the conversation.

By the end of the show, they discussed that there was a need for another episode. It wouldn’t be a part two that would extend the conversation, it would be a part two that would give folks tangible steps on dealing with stressful situations, breathing techniques, and meditation practices. We will keep everyone updated, but this follow up show will be in the works soon!

Tapping Into Our Hidden Potential E5

What is the experience being rooted and unwavering? How does it help us lead differently? And how do we practice connecting to our deeper core? Rooted & Unwavering host Hylke Faber and Rick Gage, Growth Leaders Network Executive Director, explore lessons learned from the first four Rooted & Unwavering conversations with Toni Townes-Whitley, NASDAQ Board Member, Zoya Lytvyn, leader of the Ukrainian online school system, Rene Yoakum, Chief People and Customer Officer at Remitly and Erica Schaper, President of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.

Core insights include:

* Being grounded in our true self helps us be stronger than our ratio can comprehend;
* Keeping our eye off the ball and on the field helps us access greater wisdom;
* Letting ourselves be supported by our inner teacher helps us to mature in the moment;
* Being humble about what is ours and what is not, helps us to stay true to our purpose.

Spend some time getting to know your inner resources as you listen to this episode of Rooted & Unwavering.

Growth Leaders Network is a team of experienced facilitators and coaches dedicated to helping individuals, teams and organizations thrive by helping them recognize their innate greatness and putting it to work.

Rick-Gage-HeadshotRick Gage:  Executive Change Agent | Architect Builder of Culture & Community | Leadership Coach & Facilitator.

My passion is unleashing human potential in the workplace and beyond. Very early in life I got to see truly transformational leaders up close and personal.

I became fascinated by the powerful impact they had in the lives of people around them. Since early elementary school I have aspired to be a leader who makes a difference.

In school, I led informally and as an elected student leader. A book about servant leadership was a key influence that shaped how I have approached the role of leader. That passion carried forward into the majority my career where my greatest fulfillment was the positive team environment I could create for my team.

I’ve had the opportunity to lead in some of the great global companies of our time over the last 40 years. Working for companies with deep roots in Japan, Germany, India, France and the United States gave me an appreciation for the powerful role culture plays – both within an organization in the society that surrounds the organization.

After climbing the corporate ladder there came a point where it all shifted for me. What had driven me up to that point no longer seemed to matter. An extended sabbatical gave me the chance to think deeply about what I wanted to do and more importantly who I wanted to be. From that time forward I have been moving into deeper and deeper alignment between my work with who I authentically am.

My father taught me very early that with privilege comes responsibility. I’ve worked hard to use my voice to amplify the voices of those often not fully heard. Advocating for women is something I’ve been doing my whole life. Accepting and celebrating difference has always been easy and natural for me. I just love people. And in recent years, I’m humbled as I learn about the ways I still fall short and how much more there is to do for people of color and all marginalized communities.

My work now with Growth Leaders Network provides such rich and rewarding opportunities to engage deeply with clients who want to grow as leaders, build stronger teams and transform workplace cultures. Beyond GLN, I also am honored to lead mindful communities like the Organizational Mindfulness Network (OM Network) and support transformational teams like the one at A Human Workplace. In all of these ways I can help create the context in which every person can thrive.

Beyond work, being with my sweetheart and six grandchildren is what brings me joy. I’m working to see the world through the wonder of a child’s eyes and the wisdom of grandfather eyes.

About Our Host

Hylke-Faber-headshotFor as long as he can remember Hylke Faber has been curious about what this life is about. His ongoing inquiry has become his work: helping people individually and collectively to discover what is possible in life and express that authentically and fearlessly.

Hylke started his work life with Towers Perrin as consultant and then as Partner with Strategic Decisions Group, serving a wide range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, consumer electronics and life sciences companies. A major shift occurred during this critical phase of his life. He had become the typical, hard-charging, 16-hours-a-day strategy consultant, and was burning out at a rapid clip.

When he discovered meditation, everything changed. He was so taken by his new discoveries that he chose to bring to business what he was learning: that there is a way we can have it all – we can be fulfilled, do work we love, and create extraordinary results with others. He thinks of it as creating a sense of ease in business.

He learned how to coach and facilitate human transformation completing his coaching certification with Newfield Network and by working at Axialent, the culture and leadership company. After a few years, he founded Co-Creation Partners together with other leaders in the field of transformation and personal development. Then he formed Constancee to help people grow by creating the conditions where deep personal, interpersonal and organizational shifts happen routinely.

He leads Growth Leaders Network, the culture and team development consultancy. He has also taught coaching at Columbia Business School Executive Education and has contributed to Harvard Business Review. He is currently teaching a course on Climate Conscious Leadership at Arizona State University. His award-winning book, Taming Your Crocodiles: Unlearn Fear & Become a True Leader, was published by Dover in 2018.

His next book, Taming Your Crocodiles Practices for Leadership Depth, came out in 2020. Besides helping others grow, which he loves, he is a trained opera singer, enjoys hiking and writing, is an avid reader, in particular of biographies, and is always in the process of growing himself. He integrates all of what he learns in his work with executives.

Karen-Loomis-Phoenix-Business-RadioKaren Loomis left a successful corporate career where she directed the branding, marketing and advertising efforts of a major retailer and finance company with over 115 stores in 20 major markets across the U.S. Through her unique branding and marketing approach the company tripled their annual revenue ($500M to $1.5 B).

Her professional branding experiences also include a two year stint with an advertising agency where she helped both consumer and business-to business clients increase their brand awareness and sales.

Karen realized several years ago, she does her best work with small business owners and entrepreneurs who perhaps do not have the resources of large corporations, but still want to see the same kind of success…doubling or tripling their income with a “memorable” brand.

E111 The Dynamic Career of an International PMO Leader featuring Mayte Mata Sivera

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe welcomed Mayte Mata Sivera. Mayte shares her story of the personal and professional challenges and successes as a multi-cultural international PMO and Project Management Leader. Mayte and Joe also discussed The PMO Leader, Volunteering, PMI and so much more in this fast-moving hour-long discussion.

Mayte is a PMO Director, a PMP certification holder, ScrumAtScale Practitioner and recently she earned the Product Owner Certification. She enjoys public speaking engagements and is a passionate volunteer at PMI and PMI Local Chapters. For six years, she has been a volunteer at TEDxSaltLakeCity. She is also now the Americas Ambassador for The PMO Leader global community. She has more than 15 years of experience leading teams and programs & projects around the world, and her passion is to share her knowledge and nonstop learning from volunteer opportunities.

Mayte discussed her move to the United States and the challenges that can come with an international move, “Yeah, that was a big challenge. I was working with a lot of projects around France and with French speakers, so I realized that I was in a meeting and my English level was very low. And if I really wanted to succeed and if you really want to learn a language.”

We discussed some strategies for working from home in this new remote work world. Mayte shared some of her tips including, “What I did is every six months I changed my office. So if now I have the table looking at the window in the next six months, I change the table like that. I don’t get bored to be always in the same place. And like you, I set an alarm. And when I have work that is more reading emails or supporting people. Sometimes I take some calls working around the backyard, other times I answer some emails from the living room.”

ABOUT Deep Impact Leadership The Art of the Connected Conversation

Negativity, sabotage, self doubt, and more are a part of cyclical thinking, leading to cyclical results. The National Science Foundation summarized a study on human thoughts per day. It is said that the average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those thousands of thoughts, 80% are negative, and 95% are the very DeepImpactLeadershipPodcastSquare1500x1500same repetitive thoughts as the day before.

If our minds are prone to negative and cyclical thinking, how do we move beyond this mundane programming to achieve professional and organizational success and significance?

We must master our intrapersonal and interpersonal communication. Impactful leadership requires effective communication within ourselves and with others.

This radio show and podcast is dedicated to exploring the magic in “connected conversations”. Listen in as these pros share the tips, tricks, strategies and disciplines that keep them at the top of their game day-in and day-out serving their industries at the highest levels.

Jumping Into NonProfit! E123

Steven Nisbet, Veteran Entrepreneur, President and Co-Founder of Shields and Stripes shared his traumatic, life altering experiences with guests and explained how his life changed. His background paved the way for his future of helping others and bettering the care for service members.

Service members all over the world are risking their lives and deserve the best quality care out there and Steven has figured out how to make that happen and help others get the help they need and deserve! Shields-and-Stripes-logo

Shields and Stripes is a 501c3 that provides therapeutic and health services to first responders, active duty military members and veterans.

Shields and Stripes are bringing Special Operations resilience experience to care for our first-line defenders. Our innovative solution treats a sub-population suffering in silence to increased levels of mental health issues.

Additionally, Shields and Stripes encourages help-seeking culture change among the service members, veterans, and first responder community. Our compassion and determination decreases negative perceptions, minimizes bias and eliminates discrimination against those isolated and in pain so they don’t get left behind.

Steven-Nisbet-Tycoons-of-Small-BizSteven Nisbet is a Veteran Entrepreneur. He served nearly 16 years and medically retired in June 2021 from the U.S. Air Force as a Special Warfare Pararescueman. Steven is the Co-Founder and current President of Shields and Stripes Inc.

Steven grew up in Tucson Arizona with aspirations to go to college and play soccer.  After graduating high school and attending a local community college studying Astronomy, Steven decided to enlist in the military to become a Pararescueman in October of 2005.

Steven always had a drive and passion to help others, which made his decision to become a Pararescueman a no brainer. Steven served in 10 combat deployments in various operating areas to include Afghanistan, Africa, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.  Over this period, Steven has lost over 15 team mates to combat or combat related circumstances and has himself experienced mental health injuries due to sustained combat operations.

As Steven transfers from military to civilian life, his passion to help others is just as strong as when he began. His personal experiences with PTSD and other trauma related symptoms have made him acutely aware of those groups that are in need of the very treatment he received.  Steven identified a lack of mental and physical health support within the Law Enforcement and First Responder communities, thus creating Shields and Stripes.

He is the son of a 30 year Law Enforcement veteran and knows first hand how these careers can affect the individual. Steven’s mission with Shields and Stripes is to change the way public service professionals are cared for when they sustain mental and physical injuries caused by the career path they have chosen.
