How to Hire Technology Talent More Inclusively E25

Arizona’s technology ecosystem can only become more vibrant by attracting and retaining diverse technology talent. In fact, by emphasizing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) throughout their hiring process, Arizona businesses can solidify Arizona’s role as a more innovative and vibrant economic powerhouse that sets a precedent regionally, nationally and globally.

The April 2022 episode of the Arizona Technology Council’s AZTechCast podcast featured e-commerce experts including Angela Hughey, president, ONE Community; Biju Menon, CEO, FairHire; Steve Tepper, executive director, Arizona Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ACBVI) and Erica Young, enterprise solutions architect, SHRM. These leaders joined Karen Nowicki, president and owner of Phoenix Business RadioX, and Bianca Buliga, director of marketing + communications at the Council, in exploring technology’s role in discussing how to hire technology talent more intentionally and inclusively to further propel Arizona’s technology revolution.

Throughout this hour-long episode, this panel of experts defined what inclusive hiring means to them and to the organizations they represent. The conversation began with the suggestion that hiring needs to be re-evaluated from the HR perspective. Rather than creating job applications that are meant to weed out applicants based on their education level or years of experience, it was suggested that HR departments should intentionally design applicants that “weave in” applicants that may traditionally be overlooked. Many organizations may be immediately disqualifying applicants that could provide immense value just because their applications may seem lacking on paper.

ONE-Community-logo

In February 2013, ONE Community launched the UNITY Pledge, a concerted effort by Arizona businesses, organizations, faith leaders and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ) individuals and their allies.

In February 2014, SB1062 began making headlines. ONE Community was in a unique position to reach out to their UNITY Pledge signers and encouraged them to share what they know – that discrimination is bad for business and bad for the State of Arizona.

They partnered with ONE Community business member, FASTSIGNS on Central to create the OPEN for Business to Everyone signs. During the peak of SB 1062, they distributed more than 3500 signs in less than 72 hours and the sign was shared more than 100,000 times on the internet, garnering national attention. This campaign along with the efforts of their partners was integral in encouraging Arizona’s governor to veto the bill, and a movement was born.

Since that time the UNITY Pledge has become the largest equality pledge in the nation.

ONE Community’s innovative educational and advocacy programs have built the foundation for our actionable work. Each year brings new victories and new challenges on the path to true equality for all Arizonans. They continue to build the bridges and the partnerships that will get the state there and they promise that they will not rest until we all reach the goal of creating an Arizona that truly celebrates, respects and protects us all.

Angela-Hughey-AZ-TechCastAngela Hughey is the co-founder & President of ONE Community and ONE Community Foundation. Founded in 2008, ONE Community is the coalition of socially responsible businesses and organizations moving diversity, inclusion and equality for all Arizonans forward. ONE Community Foundation provides educational opportunities to ensure better understanding of nondiscrimination and the importance of being LGBTQ inclusive.

In 2013 Angela and the ONE Community team launched the UNITY Pledge a concerted effort by Arizona businesses and individuals to advance workplace equality and equal treatment in housing and public accommodations for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) individuals and their allies. Over 3,300 businesses and organizations and more than 20,000 Arizonans have taken the UNITY Pledge; the largest equality pledge in the nation.

Ms. Hughey is a 2012 graduate of Valley Leadership Institute. She has won awards for her work as an independent filmmaker and was honored with the YWCA 2013 Tribute to Leadership Award for Public Service. Ms. Hughey has received the HRC Individual Equality Award and was inducted into Echo Magazine’s Hall of Fame.

Ms. Hughey is a 2013 inductee into the Phoenix College Alumni Hall of Fame. Angela and ONE Community led the open for business to everyone coalition in the first quarter of 2014 in response to SB1062, which led to an educational campaign of the same name, which focuses on diversity, inclusion and equality for all Arizonans to ensure the economic sustainability of the state.

Echo Magazine named Angela their 2014 Woman of the Year. In 2015, Angela became the founding Chair of Valley Leadership’s Leadership Advance Program for high potential leaders, overseeing the program for two years. Angela was the 2016 recipient of the Anti-Defamation League’s Al Brook’s Community Leadership Award. Angela was a member of the Arizona Community Foundation’s LGBTQ Philanthropy committee from 2016 through 2018.

Ms. Hughey is the recipient of the 2018 Positively Powerful Woman of Equality Leadership Award and is a 2018 Diversity Leadership Alliance Diversity Leader honoree. Ms. Hughey was a member of the City of Phoenix and State of Arizona 2020 Complete Count Census Committees. Angela currently serves on the boards of the Phoenix Community Alliance and Visit Mesa. Angela is a 2020 Phoenix Mercury Believe in Women and In Business Magazine Women of Achievement honoree, and one of the Phoenix Business Journal’s Most Admired Leaders for 2021.

Reimagining Work With Tim Creasey E101

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, PMO Joe chats with the Chief Innovation Officer of Prosci, Tim Creasey. Tim is a returning guest and while they discuss change management, much of the episode is focused on the future of work and reimagining work in our post-covid world.

Tim Creasey is an author, researcher, and change expert who focuses on the people side of change with process, wit and vigor. Tim’s work forms the foundation of the world’s largest body of knowledge on change management. His role as Chief Innovation Officer at Prosci gives him unparalleled insight into change management challenges, trends and futures.

One of the concepts Tim shared is the mindset of reentry or reimagining the workplace. He said, “even in April 2020, like reentry is you’re driving down 15, you get off the highway, get gas, you get back on 15, you reentered the road that you departed from. But the road we were on wasn’t going to be there even back in April 2020.” We are now reimagining what work will be like for us.

The concept of gathering has been lost in some respect as we’ve lived in a remote work environment. Tim shared, “Gathering matters. Even though we can do almost anything apart. Gathering matters. And so how are we going to be strategic, intentional, really thoughtful when we are able to share space and make the most of the time, we share space. And let’s not default to thinking we have to share space just because that’s the way we used to always do things.

Tim and PMO Joe continue their discussion about the future of work, reconnecting, technology and the digital revolution. Be sure to catch all the conversation and listen to the full episode: https://www.thepmosquad.com/podcasts/project-management-office-hours/episodes/2147725443

Avner-Malcolm-Phoenix-Business-RadioXMalcolm Avner’s clients are business owners and organization leaders who are driven to improve leadership performance and regain passion for work. Clients are empowered to achieve goals by addressing self-defeating patterns of behavior and thought.

Working 1-to-1 with Malcolm or in small group of company leaders, clients are able to more efficiently resolve business issues, increase leadership effectiveness, improve communication skills, and shift the culture of an organization.

On the personal side, clients acquire knowledge, tools and support that enhance their sense of well-being, personal relationships, and life experience.

Leaders who become Malcolm’s clients…

  • believe as he does, that business has unlimited potential to elevate humanity and benefit the planet
  • behave as he does, treating employees and other stakeholders with genuine caring and a win-win approach
  • think as he does, committed to continuous improvement and greater wisdom
  • feel as he did, disappointed and frustrated that the business isn’t more successful and work more fulfilling

Early in his careers – both as a professional athlete and a business builder – Malcolm’s focus was guided by conventional wisdom on how to achieve success: do it alone; follow the rules; and outwork the competition. He followed that guidance and, by most measures, found success in numerous endeavors. But something was missing: a sense of meaningful impact. He eventually realized that while hard work and following the rules can generate success, the success is hollow because the guidance is incomplete.

After experiencing some painful but necessary business lessons, and doing some serious soul searching, he discovered new guidance that led to impactful, meaningful work as a coach:

  • Endeavors that are aligned with a higher purpose (more than just making money or impressing people) are the most rewarding – financially, emotionally, and spiritually
  • Updating longstanding beliefs and behavior patterns – even the ones that seem most sacred – opens the door to better results
  • Having fun at work isn’t a diversion of energy – it’s a source of energy…and creativity… and motivation!

Glendale Arizona – You Belong Here – From Super Bowls to Exploding Development and Growth E3

This week Robert and JJ’s guests were City of Glendale Arizona’s Mayor Jerry Weiers and Assistant Director of Economic Development, Jessi Pederson. From Mayor Weiers refreshing honesty to Jessi’s knowledgeable insight, we couldn’t have had a better discussion.

The City of Glendale is a vibrant and welcoming metropolitan city with extraordinary opportunities for everyone to prosper, connect, and experience all that is remarkable about this great community.

We began our discussion with the Super Bowl. Glendale, home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, is hosting their third Super Bowl in 2023 after hosting in 2008 and 2015. The Mayor is proud of the continuing development of the Westgate Entertainment District and the space available to double it’s current size. Jessi shared examples of the exploding growth along the Loop 303, Glendale’s New Frontier, with projections to add 80,000,000 square feet of development along this corridor within the next 10 years.

Both of our guests are excited about the planned redevelopment of the city center to include the city hall office building, amphitheater and park, and to continue to the rest of downtown Glendale.

With over 250,000 residents and nearly 2,000 city employees working together to make Glendale the community of choice for those looking to live, work, and play, You Belong Here is a fitting tagline.

Valley residents will learn about what goes into hosting Super Bowl 57, the current and planned development along the Loop 303 corridor, and what is happening with the redevelopment of the downtown city center.

The city of Glendale is a vibrant and welcoming metropolitan city with extraordinary opportunities for everyone to prosper, connect, and experience all that is remarkable about our community. Incorporated in 1910, Glendale is home to both historic attractions like Sahuaro Ranch Park and state of the art entertainment facilities like State Farm Stadium the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and the 2008, 2015, and 2023 Super Bowls. Glendale-logo

The city is home to natural preserves such as Thunderbird Conservation Park and high-tech manufacturers like Conair and Honeywell Aerospace. The city can also boast medical school Midwestern University, the only veterinary school in the state of Arizona, and Luke Air Force Base, the training home for new F-35 pilots.

The Westgate Entertainment District is Arizona’s premier entertainment destination offering a vibrant outdoor setting with unique water features and an interactive shopping, dining and entertainment experience. Nearby, the city’s Gila River Arena hosts a multitude of concerts and entertainment events throughout the year.

We are 250,784 residents and nearly 2000 city employees working together to make Glendale the community of choice for those looking to live, work, and play. Our tagline, You Belong Here, is the sentiment we want people to feel about our community and is characteristic of our mission; we improve the lives of the people we serve every day.

Whether you’re a history buff or a professional sports fan, You Belong Here. Whether you’re a resident, a business owner, a visitor, or a city employee, You Belong Here – and we’re going to prove it through our exceptional customer service and unmatched quality of life.

Jerry-Weiers-MAC-and-BLEUGlendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers was born in South Dakota and moved to Phoenix as a child. As a young boy, he learned the value of a dollar, hard work, and honesty.

He has held onto these core values throughout his life as a husband, parent, small business owner, and public servant serving four terms in the Arizona House of Representatives before becoming Mayor of Glendale in 2012.

Mayor Weiers has been a lifelong advocate for the military and veterans and dedicates endless hours to providing resources and support for those who serve and have served.

With over four decades of experience as a small business owner, Mayor Weiers provides the public sector with insight and knowledge based on a desire to reduce the bureaucratic red tape that can hinder small businesses.

Jessi-Pederson-MAC-and-BLEUJessi Pederson joined the city of Glendale in 2008 working in the City Council Office providing constituent services and support to a six-member Council.

In 2011, Jessi was recruited to join the city’s Office of Economic Development with a primary focus on redevelopment, small business assistance and special projects.

With her combined experience working with elected officials, public partners, and the business community, Jessi was asked to serve as the Chief of Staff for Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, a role she has enthusiastically filled on two separate occasions, but her passion for helping grow the Glendale business community has continued to bring her back to Economic Development.

After her most recent two-year stint serving in Mayor Weiers’ office, Jessi rejoined the Economic Development Department in 2017 as the Assistant Director.

With her return to the Economic Development Team, Jessi manages daily operations of the Economic Development staff and is focused on the redevelopment of Downtown Glendale, citywide redevelopment, small business/entrepreneurship assistance and special projects.

Good Foundations E101

In this episode of Tycoons, Todd Jarvis joins the show to talk about the importance of estate planning and how that integrates with business consulting. Todd’s background in the sciences makes him uniquely qualified in understanding technology, systems, and automation. But it was his personality that led him to connect with clients and move away from being a transactional attorney to putting counselor and advisor back into the job description.

Todd uses the LIFT strategy (you have to tune in to learn what that means) to help identify holes in a foundation so he can build a plan to fill gaps and introduction strategic partners, all in an effort to make sure your business is strategically sound and geared towards moving forward. It’s important to build upon a strong foundation so that business owners have confidence as they grow. You’ll also learn about the difference between contingency vs succession planning and why it’s important to have both in place. This is a great episode full of valuable information for business owners.

jarvis-LOGO-RGB-CLEARBKGRND

Jarvis works with parents and entrepreneurs who are committed to impacting their family, business, and community as whole. We help you work through your goals so that you can answer the call to serve those who can benefit from your stewardship, guidance, services, and products.

As an entrepreneur, husband, and father it was obvious to Todd that the standard, traditional law firm model doesn’t support families and businesses. We aren’t just document drafters, we are partners with families and entrepreneurs. We advise and have disrupted the legal industry in many ways, namely: transparent fixed pricing; day-to-day, strategic proactive business advising; and an ongoing supportive relationship.

At Jarvis, we’re proud of doing things differently. We believe that meaningful, personalized legal and business guidance should be accessible. It should stem from a partnership built on mutual trust and understanding.

Todd-Jarvis-Tycoons-of-Small-BizTodd Jarvis is an entrepreneur at heart. Before attending law school he worked in the technology arm of a Fortune 500 company. When the company wanted to innovate and try new departments or processes, Todd was called upon to implement these innovations.

Wanting to be involved in all aspects of business development and growth, he decided to attend law school where he could work as counsel for business owners and be involved in multiple projects at once.

He fostered a strong tech background by earning a BS in bioinformatics at Brigham Young University and then a Masters in Genetics com concurrently with his JD. He can talk the talk with tech companies. With his scientific training he was able to sit for and pass the patent bar and is a registered patent attorney.

On the personal side Todd is a husband and father. He and his wife Jayna have seven children together. It is his focus on family that has led him to broaden his practice to include estate and legacy planning services for families, both those who do and don’t own businesses. This gives him a unique ability to truly help protect all aspects of a business owner’s life: both in and out of the business.
