Exploring Manufacturing in Arizona E16

In this episode of STEM Unplugged, we have Eric Miller on the show. Eric is the Principal & Co-Founder of PADT. We will get the explanation of what PADT is able to support in the manufacturing industry. Also on the show is Earl Wiggins, the VP of Manufacturing and Operations from EnPower, Inc.

Claire Conway of SciTech Institute joined the conversation with the focus on Manufacturing Month and the role of the Arizona Advanced Manufacturing Coalition project for sharing opportunities in STEM around Arizona.

Tune in to listen and appreciate the opportunity to explore Manufacturing in Arizona and beyond. The discussion covers some of the misconceptions about manufacturing careers, materials, the technology and product lines created in our communities. We also discuss the supply chain and examples of career opportunities in advancing a manufacturing process of a product.

Guests shared ways to encourage the workforce to learn a trade skill and be users of technology in a productive manner for a career. We discussed the skills necessary to be successful, not only in manufacturing, but in the advancing work environment today.

We also learned about the difference between semiconductor and battery manufacturing. Arizona continues to grow and advance, so consider a career pathway in the manufacturing industry!

EnPower, Inc. is a lithium-ion battery company building cells that solve the trade-off between energy and power. EnPower’s patented multilayer electrodes enable high energy density cells to repeatedly fast charge without causing degradation or capacity fade in the batteries, a critical challenge for the mass adoption of electric vehicles.

The technology has been validated by an automotive OEM and the company is currently sampling pouch cells to prospective customers in the automotive, defense, and specialty vehicle markets.

EnPower is headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, where a 240-kWh R&D line enables rapid prototyping and customer sampling. The company’s first commercial cells will be qualified in mid-2022 and its manufacturing capacity will ramp to 800 MWh of production by the end of 2023.

Earl-WigginsEarl Wiggins joined EnPower in June 2021 as Vice President of Operations and Manufacturing. In this role, Earl provides strategic and managerial leadership across product development, commercialization, and supply chain and procurement processes.

Earl spent the last two years with Tesla Motors as part of the team bringing up the new battery manufacturing facility focusing predominantly on electrode manufacturing after Tesla acquired Maxwell Technologies.

Earl had spent 13 years before the Tesla acquisition scaling the Maxwell Technologies supercapacitor manufacturing capability, increasing volume by three orders of magnitude. During his time at Maxwell, Earl brought on line three new manufacturing facilities in Asia and the U.S., including the electrode & module manufacturing plant in Peoria, Arizona.

Before Maxwell, Earl spent 21 years in the data storage industry with Quantum Corporation and Maxtor in engineering and operations senior management roles. He is a graduate of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Making a Difference E76

The Tycoons welcomed Dylan Vicha to the show to talk about Windom Security and his passion for making a difference by helping veterans and first responders, supporting the community, and building a successful business. Dylan addressed the important issue of police reform and how Windom Security is helping to support the police department.

Windom Security provides stepping stones for veterans who want to be in law enforcement by educating, training, and certifying them. This program fills that gap for veterans that don’t know where to start. Through this successful program, calls for service have dropped and the police department is now working directly with Windom Security.

Dylan’s career path allowed him to follow his passion, start a non-profit, and is building a successful, valuable, and much-needed business enterprise with Windom Security. Listen to this episode to hear his passion and hopefully gain some insight into what he’s doing to improve the lives of veterans, but also his local community. You can check out his non-profit at www.homesforwoundedwarriors.com

Windom-FINAL-W

Windom Security is Arizona’s first “farm system” for law enforcement and provides trustworthy and effective private security to local communities, municipalities and police departments. They recruit and train men and women who are on their way to a career in public policing and provide them with training, experience and mentoring helping them build resumes for future employers in public safety.

With solid partnerships with all local police departments in the valley clients benefit more with Windom than any other private security company for hire because they receive a service that leverages their relationships with public safety professionals that results in safer communities and commercial properties.

Windom Security is the only private security company around that uses the same body cameras and crime reporting technology that provides its clients with full access to data that can dramatically improve the safety of their properties.

Dylan-Vicha-Tycoons-of-Small-BizDylan Vicha has spent the majority of his adult life working to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the men and women in our military and law enforcement. He has started multiple nonprofits that do everything from building homes for severely injured combat veterans to proving relief to families who lost a loved one.

Windom Security was his dream to build a company that helped transitioning veterans prepare and find a new career outside of the military that still afforded them the opportunity to serve their country and their community.

He knew that if he could figure out a way to start a business that also supported dwindling law enforcement recruits, less than adequate numbers of officers on the streets to handle todays challenges in the community and also was a win-win solution for the recent police reforms being pushed by the communities he would be rewarded with the same satisfaction that he loves from his nonprofit work.

Dylan enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife and two little boys in Scottsdale.

Unique Learning Opportunities with Arizona Homeschool Network Association’s Katherine Young and Kelmer Muhammad E2

In this episode Kyle and Scott speak with Katherine Young and Kelmer Muhammad, owners and educators with the Arizona Homeschool Network Association to learn about a unique education option for Arizona students who do not thrive in traditional public school educational setting.

These local women have seen explosive success assisting the community to provide resources for educating our youth while thinking outside the box to meet the needs of those children who do not thrive in a traditional learning environment.

AHNA is reintroducing competition back into education with alternative choice. If children are struggling, there is a solution to help them no longer struggle!

They discuss the empowerment scholarships available to parents to give them an opportunity to seek specialized learning for their student, to fit their individualized needs by taking public education dollars to be spent on tutoring or private schools. Arizona-Homeschool-Network-Association-logo

They help parents obtain these funds to assist their children with individual evaluation plans (IEPs), learning disabilities, or attend D/F schools so they have access to better cater their learning environments to their child.

Arizona Homeschool Network Association offers a tutoring service, not a school. Students come to their campus, located at MAC6, to receive tutoring and guidance to students whose parents opted not to send their children back to traditional public school learning environments but do not have the ability to teach their child themselves.

AHNA is a full-time private tutorial program offered year around. The academic approach is personalized and specialized to address the needs of at-risk youth.

AHNA’s educational program is structured to meet students’ individual needs. Students learn reading, math, science, writing, history and so much more. AHNA also offers music, computer hardware, physical training, and Spanish classes. These electives are designed for social, emotional, and physical development. Students are equipped with various skills for advance learning and employment.

About Your Co-Hosts

KyleMcIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6.  Day to day, his main operational role is on the “spaces” side of the business, focusing on creating thriving communities in the commercial office buildings, the co-working space, and the co-manufacturing space.  The other role that he plays is that of EOS implementer, working with clients to bring the Entrepreneurial Operating System, from the book Traction® to their businesses.  Additionally, he sits on the boards of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona, and The Tempe Chamber of Commerce, sustaining Tempe’s quality of life and keeping our community and economy vibrant.

“When I realized it was the mindset shift that was holding me back, the fear, the anxiety and the mindset I was able to actually get really good. And I think I’ve improved to a point, if you throw me in the deep end, I probably could survive. Unlike in high school, where I nearly drowned.” -Fatimah Abbouchi

PMO Joe and Fatimah talk about the capability of the workplace and how covid has transformed the way of working. “It needs to be about the capability that we want to bring in and how we bridge that gap between the agile environment and the non-agile environment.” -Fatima. With 90% of the Agile training being received online and paid for the individual itself, the capacity in the workplace is shifting, forcing us to have a different set of capabilities to deliver value back to the company.

On top of that, increasing productivity and collaboration in a remote world, but how might we do this? “I basically say it’s about putting agility into governance, not putting governance into agile.” Fatimah Abbouchi

Listen to Fatimah and PMO Joe discuss further about these topics in E. 88 on Project Management Office Hours

Agile Management Office (AMO) specialises in helping organisations to identify and effect change using proven agile initiatives & project/program governance best practices.

They provide high impact delivery execution, education, and coaching to help you uplift your organisations project capability and maturity in an agile way using our proprietary methodology; known as the AMO Method™ which is proven to increase maturity and employee engagement scores. As a result, building expertise within your organisation.AMOLOGOAgileManagementOfficeBlack

The AMO Method was developed to bridge the gap between organisations applying agile techniques, whilst continuing to utilise traditional governance frameworks originally developed in the 1950s. The AMO Method shifts the stance from a ‘one size fits all’ approach to Project Governance to an adaptive approach; enabling customisation that aligns with the nature of the initiative and organisation as a whole.

This is achieved by modularising capabilities to allow for a more tailored approach to servicing organisations’ needs, we develop custom solutions for our clients focusing on the uniqueness of their organisation and its current state.

Their solutions may include a combination of project toolkits (including software tools and templates) and frameworks (such as process maps, guiding principles, roles & responsibilities, and descriptions) to create/uplift the right foundations and support your business in delivering projects.

Their goal is to equip your business with the right structure and framework that will allow your team to plan, build, and implement projects as efficiently as possible – removing all unnecessary roadblocks.

To date, they have serviced clients in 15 countries across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific.
