“Making More Happy” – How Genia Reid Turned Kilwins Gainesville into a Local Treasure

Gainesville’s downtown square isn’t just a place to shop and stroll—it’s home to smiles, sweet scents, and a whole lot of happy, thanks to Genia Reid, owner of Kilwins Gainesville. In this episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Bonelli sits down with Genia to discuss her transition from education to entrepreneurship, the magic of the Kilwins brand, and what it means to build a legacy rooted in joy.

For over 75 years, Kilwins has been known for its super-premium ice cream and irresistible confections. Genia and her husband Jeff brought that tradition to Gainesville just a few years ago—but you’d never know it from the lines out the door and the scent of waffle cones wafting across the square. Phil shares how Kilwins has become a motivational reward in his own family, calling it “the best ice cream in Hall County.”

Genia explains how her background in education (28 years!) and Jeff’s corporate career at Ricoh America prepared them for business ownership. Their decision to franchise with Kilwins came after exploring other options, including Crumbl Cookies, but Kilwins stood out for its proactive support and commitment to community-centered values. Their family—including their son Jaden, now working in the shop—is deeply involved, making this a true family legacy in the making.

Beyond the storefront, Kilwins Gainesville partners with local businesses like Johnny’s Pizza and Storybook Market to host weekly field trips, giving over 100 kids a taste of sweet joy and entrepreneurship each week. Genia’s passion is palpable: “We don’t just make chocolate and ice cream—we make more happy.”

With a second store planned for Braselton and dreams of future expansions, the Reids are just getting started. Corporate gifting, community events, and velvety hot chocolate are just a few of the holiday offerings that make this local shop a destination for all ages.

Whether you’re grabbing a waffle cone, scouting corporate gifts, or looking for a new favorite field trip spot, Kilwins Gainesville is more than a sweet shop—it’s a hub of happiness.

Stop by Kilwins Gainesville on the downtown square to experience the joy yourself—or make someone’s day with a handcrafted gift. And if you’re planning a holiday surprise, don’t miss their seasonal treats and corporate gifting table!

Beyond the Annual Renewal: How Jared Bostrom Is Transforming Employee Benefits Consulting in North Georgia

A 20-Year Insurance Veteran Proves That Risk Management Is About Relationships, Not Transactions

What separates a transactional insurance broker from a true risk management partner?

For Jared Bostrom, employee benefits and compliance consultant at Burnette Insurance Agency, the answer is simple: it’s what you do in the 364 days that aren’t renewal day.

After nearly two decades in the employee benefits space, Jared has built his practice on a philosophy that challenges the traditional insurance model: “If you have employees, you have risk.” And managing that risk requires more than an annual phone call about premium increases.

The Relationship Revolution in Insurance

In a recent appearance on North Georgia Business Radio with host Phil Bonelli, Jared outlined his approach to employee benefits consulting – and it’s a far cry from the typical broker relationship most business owners experience.

“Insurance, in and of itself, is very transactional,” Jared explained. “Nobody enjoys the process of renewals and open enrollments and rate increases, to be honest. But if insurance is transactional, insurance is also risk management.”

That’s where Jared’s model diverges from the industry standard. While most brokers engage with clients primarily during renewal season, Jared and his team at Burnette Insurance work to earn their commission every single month through ongoing value delivery.

What Year-Round Risk Management Actually Looks Like

So what does it mean to have an insurance consultant who’s actively engaged throughout the year? For Jared’s clients, it means access to services that go far beyond policy placement:

Manager Training: Regular sessions focused on developing leadership communication skills and building healthier workplace cultures. Jared recently hosted a workshop at the Gainesville Civic Center on improving communication skills in the workplace – a direct investment in reducing organizational risk through better leadership.

Employee Handbook Audits: Comprehensive reviews to ensure policies align with current Department of Labor regulations and protect businesses from compliance violations.

HR Compliance Consulting: Guidance on navigating critical thresholds and requirements, from Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) obligations when you hit 50 employees to Fair Labor Standards Act compliance.

Risk Assessment: Proactive identification of exposures and vulnerabilities before they become costly problems.

“We really go after earning that commission every month by doing manager training, by auditing employee handbooks, by doing some of those things that impact your policies and the culture of your organization,” Jared noted.

The Cost-Benefit Equation Business Owners Miss

Here’s something every business owner knows: after payroll, employee benefits are typically your next biggest expense. You’re already writing substantial premium checks every month.

But here’s what many don’t realize: most insurance brokers provide minimal value between renewals, despite collecting commissions on those monthly premiums.

Jared’s approach flips that equation. “Because there’s no fee for service – benefits are expensive – we really go after earning that commission every month,” he explained.

For the same premium investment you’re already making, wouldn’t you rather work with someone who provides ongoing HR consulting, compliance support, and leadership development?

When Compliance Thresholds Catch You Off Guard

One of the most valuable aspects of Jared’s consulting approach is helping businesses navigate the compliance landscape as they grow.

“There are certain thresholds that you cross as a business owner, as an organization, that the Department of Labor says, ‘Congratulations, you’ve crossed the 50-employee threshold,'” Jared noted. “So Family Medical Leave Act now applies. Ready or not, here we come.”

These regulatory requirements – from FMLA to wage and hour laws under the Fair Labor Standards Act – represent significant risk for growing businesses. Having a consultant who understands these thresholds and helps you prepare for them proactively can save thousands in potential penalties and litigation costs.

The Image Bearers Philosophy: Faith-Integrated Business

What truly sets Jared apart isn’t just his service model – it’s the “why” behind it. Throughout the interview, both Jared and host Phil Benelli discussed the concept of being “image bearers” in their work.

“Life is really all about relationship,” Phil opened the show. “If you think of your best experiences in life, they’re likely not by yourself. They were in relationship.”

Jared expanded on this, sharing how his discipleship group at church has been working through “The J Curve” – a book about bringing glory to God in the work we do.

“The image bearer aspect of when we’re in that spot where we get to connect well with others, where we get to shine as humans, as image bearers – that is where we can boast in a way that it’s not prideful, but boast in a way that is effectively meeting our calling in what we are called to do,” Jared reflected.

This integration of faith and business isn’t just philosophical – it shapes how Jared approaches client relationships and the value he brings to every interaction.

Raising the Bar on Professional Service Relationships

Both Jared and Phil touched on a broader issue in professional services: the low bar for what constitutes a “relationship.”

“The threshold, maybe that bar for what constitutes a relationship, is frustrating,” Jared observed. “I think there’s some redemptive work that can be done in terms of really, maybe elevating what those expectations can be.”

Phil echoed this sentiment, describing the typical client experience: “Maybe it’s like, my insurance guy just takes me to play golf once a year, takes me to lunch, and that’s it. But you might not know that there are Jared Bostroms out there in the world who are really looking to bring value.”

For business owners who have only experienced transactional broker relationships, Jared’s model might seem almost too good to be true. But it’s built on a simple premise: when you genuinely serve clients and add value throughout the year, everyone wins.

Building a Healthy Workplace Through Better Communication

One of Jared’s core beliefs is that healthy workplaces have good communicators – and that communication directly impacts organizational risk.

“I would argue that a healthy workplace oftentimes has good communicators,” he said. “You can connect those dots very easily when it comes to if your leaders practice what they preach and if they communicate well.”

This is why Burnette Insurance invests in hosting workshops and seminars on topics like leadership communication – because the quality of communication in an organization directly affects turnover, workplace culture, compliance risk, and ultimately, the bottom line.

The Burnette Insurance Difference

After almost 20 years with Burnette Insurance Agency, Jared has built a practice that proves insurance consulting can be about more than pushing paper and collecting commissions.

His clients don’t just get group health, group life, and group dental coverage – they get a risk management partner who understands that employees represent both the greatest opportunity and the greatest risk in any organization.

For North Georgia business owners looking to attract and retain qualified team members while managing compliance risk, Jared offers a model that transforms employee benefits from a necessary expense into a strategic advantage.

Key Takeaways for Business Owners:

  • If you have employees, you have risk – and that risk requires year-round management, not just annual attention.
  • After payroll, benefits are typically your next biggest expense. Make sure you’re getting ongoing value for that investment.
  • Critical compliance thresholds (like 50 employees triggering FMLA) can catch you off guard if you don’t have proactive guidance.
  • Healthy workplace culture and good communication directly reduce organizational risk.
  • Your insurance consultant should be a relationship-based partner, not a transactional vendor.

If you’re approaching that 50-employee threshold, you definitely want to hear what Jared has to say about FMLA compliance. Trust me on this one.

Highlights of the Show:

0:07 – 0:30 | Show Introduction North Georgia Business Radio theme and show positioning – “Some shows lean left, some lean right, but we lean local and business”

0:30 – 2:21 | The Power of Relationships in Business Phil’s opening monologue on how life’s best and worst experiences happen in relationships, and why this show celebrates relationship-driven business in the community. Sets up the entire theme of the episode.

2:21 – 5:27 | “If You Have Employees, You Have Risk” Jared introduces himself and lays out his core philosophy. Explains the difference between transactional insurance and true risk management. Discusses Department of Labor thresholds (50-employee FMLA trigger), Fair Labor Standards Act, and why a qualified risk management partner should add value year-round, not just at renewal. Key Quote: “Insurance is transactional. Your renewal happens once a year, but insurance, in and of itself, is risk management.”

5:27 – 6:34 | The Consultant vs. Commodity Approach Phil draws parallels to his banking career and explains why Jared’s approach is different – he’s a consultant who happens to provide insurance, not just a commodity provider. Emphasizes the value-add beyond just getting quotes.

6:34 – 8:39 | Earning Commission Every Month Jared explains how Burnette Insurance delivers ongoing value through manager training, employee handbook audits, and workplace communication workshops. Discusses the morning’s seminar at Gainesville Civic Center on improving communication skills and how good communicators create healthier workplaces that reduce risk. Key Quote: “We really go after earning that commission every month.”

8:39 – 10:00 | Raising the Relationship Bar Discussion on how low the bar often is for “professional relationships” (golf once a year) and the redemptive work needed to elevate expectations. Phil transitions to commercial break with a tease about Jared’s basketball career.

10:47 – 12:21 | Basketball Career & Life Lessons Introduction Phil returns from break calling Jared “no jive turkey” (Thanksgiving pun). Recaps the employee benefits value proposition, then asks about Jared’s high school and collegiate basketball career and what lessons helped him professionally. Phil notes Jared looks like he “can still go hard in the paint” and “wouldn’t be getting the rebound” if boxed out.

12:21 – 13:34 | Family of Five & Rebecca the Risk Manager Jared reveals he has 5 kids and has been married to Rebecca for almost 25 years. Discusses his oldest son finishing junior year soccer at Covenant College – made all-conference, just lost in championship game in penalty kicks. Talks about discipline and diligence necessary for athletic success starting at an early age. Key moment: Phil stops him to ask about Rebecca – Jared’s been talking about her “in almost every prior conversation” as “the most beautiful, amazing woman in the whole world.” Jared’s line: “I’m in risk management, but my wife, as the mother of five children who she’s home schooled throughout their school, is the real risk manager.”

13:34 – 16:18 | Good Habits, Discipline & Dependence Jared connects athletic training to business success – spending time in the gym, getting up shots, being repetitive translates to sales-facing roles. Discusses the tension between diligence and dependence as a believer – not being responsible for all blessings but depending on the Creator. Burnette is a faith-driven organization. Distinguishes between “fun things” (golf, tickets, donuts) and “valuable things” (rolling up sleeves to help with actual HR needs). Key Quote: “Those are inherently not bad things. Those are great things, but they’re not valuable things.”

16:18 – 19:15 | Ultra Marathons & David vs. Goliath Phil shares his ultra marathon experience – stopped when he got the farm but planning to run the Georgia Jewel (56 miles) in May with Logan. Discusses drawing on hard athletic experiences when facing tough professional challenges. Tells the David and Goliath story – David had confidence because of prior performance (killing the bear and lion) and dependence on God. “Confidence comes from your dependence and prior performance.” Jared’s response: The discipline came from “reps” – David’s target practice with the slingshot didn’t happen by accident.

20:05 – 22:11 | How Do You Eat an Elephant? One Bite at a Time Phil returns with “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Recaps themes of building relationships through adding value and going through reps. Shares his 100K race (62 miles) story – did 125,000 steps in a weekend, with about 80,000 being individual decisions he didn’t want to make but had to. Connects to HR implementation challenges.

22:11 – 23:43 | Small Steps Toward Compliance Jared’s advice for overwhelmed HR departments of one: don’t try to do everything at once. Start with employee handbook audit – look at policies, update them, ensure consistency in implementation and communication. Small steps in the right direction rather than wholesale changes. Key message: “You’re not going to show up on race day and just immediately run – you will get burned out very quickly.”

23:43 – 25:13 | Start Somewhere & Keep Improving Phil discusses being intimidated by process documentation, procrastinating because the task seemed overwhelming. Emphasizes: prioritize with Jared’s help, start somewhere, and have freedom knowing it’s a never-ending journey. As your business grows, your HR needs evolve. Quarterly rocks and goals – “we will never arrive.”

25:13 – 26:38 | The Complex & Ever-Changing Compliance Landscape Jared explains we live in a complex workplace environment – every presidential administration change creates a moving target. OSHA standards have changed massively (electronic records retention now mandated). Small businesses “don’t know what they don’t know” and it can be crippling. Phil’s response: Grateful for Jared’s proactive approach – insurance is reactive (mitigates risk that came to fruition), but Jared helps avoid risk and negative outcomes entirely. Jared: “You sound like you should be on my team right now” and notes he can’t believe he hasn’t used the word “proactive” yet – it’s in every conversation he has.

35:57 – 37:59 | The Joy of Serving Customers Phil’s passionate monologue: every successful business grows by serving customers better. If customers feel like a hindrance, you need self-reflection time. Discusses his joy serving businesses through Roundtable Advisors (fractional CFO and HR) – “It’s an honor to be a seat at the table with men and women out there growing our economy, presenting opportunities for image bearers of God.” Multiple enthusiastic references to Killian’s ice cream on Gainesville square – pistachio flavor is his favorite.

37:59 – 38:52 | Image Bearers in Business Jared responds to Phil’s “image bearers” term – got it from Jared originally. Shares about discipleship group studying “The J Curve” about bringing glory to God in work. Being an image bearer means connecting well with others and meeting our calling. Key Quote: “That is where we can boast in a way that it’s not prideful, but boast in a way that is effectively meeting our calling in what we are called to do.”

38:52 – 40:19 | Loving the Unlovable & Lessons from Jared Phil shares story about encountering a rude young man on the square – realization that “hurt people hurt people.” Sometimes we catch the brunt of customers’ bad days. What a blessing to bring light to those not reflecting it back.

Lessons from Jared:

  1. Go serve your customers, be a true resource – that’s how you build relationships
  2. Take your God-given gifts and experience to truly serve
  3. Rebecca is the best

What do Amish tech support, picking up girls at bars, and running illegal solar air conditioners have in common? They’re all part of Johnny Valentine’s wild journey into the solar business.

On this electrifying episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Benelli sits down with Johnny Valentine, founder and CEO of Gain Solar Services, for the most entertaining solar conversation you’ll ever hear—complete with spontaneous country songs and a business origin story that involves trying to impress women.

Johnny’s solar story starts in the 1990s, growing up in a passive solar house his hippie California dad built in Georgia. But the real turning point? “I was 25 years old thinking, ‘What’s the coolest thing I could say to a girl at a bar?'” Johnny admits. “‘I’m hanging solar panels, baby!’ That’s what got me into solar.” (And it worked—six kids with Lindsay later, he’s still going strong.)

But here’s where it gets fascinating: While everyone else in 2012 was doing basic grid-tied systems, Johnny spent seven years driving mountain back roads, installing off-grid battery systems, and calling the Amish for tech support. That’s right—Amish solar installers who’d been running battery-based systems for 30 years taught Johnny everything he knows. They’d email him invoices that came through as faxes, and he’d call them at the phone shack for advice.

Fast forward to today: lithium iron phosphate batteries have completely revolutionized what’s possible. Johnny explains why ground-mounted arrays beat rooftop systems, how battery storage changed everything, and why that 30% federal tax credit you’ve been hearing about is about to expire—making NOW the time to act.

From running his entire house (including three solar air conditioners) completely off-grid to helping North Georgia homeowners achieve energy independence, Johnny’s mission is clear: practical, honest solar solutions at rock-bottom prices, delivered with country flair.

“A solar man ain’t nothing hold him down,” Johnny sings during the show. “He’s like a rodeo.”

Ready to join the solar revolution? Visit gainsolarpower.com or call Johnny’s legendary voicemail (seriously, call just to hear it) at 770-843-3497. But don’t wait—the 30% tax credit is disappearing, and Johnny’s moving these panels faster than they can get them off the pallet.

Go. Fight. Win. How Systems and Strategy Drive Business Growth

In this episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Bonelli is joined by two powerhouse guests: JD Mealor of Cadence Bank and Bryan Scott of Go Fight Win. Together, they dive deep into the crucial yet often overlooked topic of systems in business—how they shape growth, improve operations, and ultimately create freedom for business owners.

JD Mealorr, a fan-favorite and commercial banking expert, brings insight from decades of helping companies secure capital and use it wisely. His message is clear: financial statements aren’t just for banks—they’re your roadmap. Business owners must go beyond tax returns and understand what their numbers are really saying. Accurate, timely, and detailed financials are non-negotiable if you want to lead effectively.

Bryan Scott, founder of Go Fight Win, breaks down how businesses of all sizes can use systems thinking and automation to streamline operations. Whether it’s automating your kid’s lunch plan or digitizing complex equipment checklists, Bryan shows how identifying repeatable processes can unlock efficiency and reduce decision fatigue. From lawn care services to heavy equipment companies, Bryan’s work demonstrates that systemization isn’t just for tech companies—it’s for everyone.

The conversation explores how many entrepreneurs operate without consistent procedures, relying on instinct rather than strategy. This leads to burnout, missed opportunities, and chaos. The guests share stories of businesses transformed by simply creating playbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and customized digital tools.

A powerful theme running through the episode is the myth of control. Many founders resist implementing systems because they fear losing control or diluting quality. But as Phil points out, the real risk lies in not empowering others. Delegation isn’t giving up control—it’s scaling your impact. Systems free up leaders to focus on what only they can do.

The trio also dives into the importance of the right people in the right roles. JD shares how different markets like Gainesville, Athens, and Augusta each require unique banking strategies. Brian discusses how AI and automation are reshaping the workplace, allowing humans to focus on high-impact, fulfilling tasks. With the rise of tools that eliminate repetitive work, leaders must now double down on developing emotional intelligence and trust-based teams.

Whether you’re a solopreneur or running a $100M operation, this episode is a must-listen. It’s filled with actionable advice on how to implement structure without sacrificing soul.

How Fraudsters Target North Georgia Businesses (And How to Stop Them)

How to Protect Your North Georgia Business from Banking Fraud: Expert Insights from Cadence Bank

Banking fraud is targeting small businesses across North Georgia at alarming rates, and criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics. In a recent episode of North Georgia Business Radio, JD Mealor from Cadence Bank joined host Phil Bonelli to share critical fraud prevention strategies that every business owner needs to know.

Understanding How Banking Fraudsters Operate

According to Mealor, banking fraud criminals don’t work randomly—they operate strategically in waves. These fraudsters target specific banks, geographies, and vulnerable businesses, particularly those that have recently undergone mergers or experienced organizational changes when security awareness may be lower.

“The fraudsters, the criminals, the people that wake up every morning, put on their work clothes and go to an office to commit crimes—they actually target different geographies and different banks from time to time,” Mealor explained during the interview. This systematic approach makes fraud prevention an ongoing concern rather than a one-time worry for business leaders.

The Phone Call Scam Targeting Business Owners

One of the most prevalent banking fraud tactics involves fraudsters calling businesses and impersonating bank representatives. These criminals use caller ID spoofing to make it appear they’re calling from legitimate financial institutions. They sound professional, know details about your bank’s systems, and create urgent scenarios requiring immediate action.

The key to their success? Getting business owners to voluntarily provide login credentials, usernames, and passwords.

The One Rule That Stops Banking Fraud 100% of the Time

Mealor emphasized a critical fraud prevention rule that every business owner must follow: “Never, for one second, give out your user ID, password, credentials, or anything to anyone on the phone that asks for it.”

Banks already have access to customer information and will never request login credentials over the phone. If someone calls asking for this information—regardless of how legitimate they sound or what the caller ID displays—they are criminals attempting to access your business accounts.

“Banks have the information. They don’t need to call and ask you for that,” Bonelli reinforced during the discussion. This simple awareness can protect businesses from devastating financial losses.

Who Else Is at Risk?

While business owners face significant fraud threats, Mealor also highlighted other vulnerable populations in North Georgia communities. Criminals often target recently retired individuals, people who have lost loved ones (monitoring obituaries for potential victims), and anyone unfamiliar with managing finances independently.

The banking expert urged listeners to share fraud prevention information with elderly family members and vulnerable individuals who may not recognize sophisticated scam tactics.

Beyond Fraud: Leadership Lessons for Business Growth

The conversation also explored essential leadership principles for business success. Mealor shared his belief that “self-awareness is a superpower” for business leaders, explaining that understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and impact on others enables more effective leadership.

Both Bonelli and Mealor discussed the importance of operating in your “highest and best use” by building teams that complement your skills. Rather than viewing additional staff as expenses, successful business owners recognize team members as investments that multiply impact and efficiency.

For solopreneurs or small business owners, this might mean hiring virtual assistants, using fractional CFO services, or partnering with back-office support companies to handle administrative tasks while focusing on revenue-generating activities.

Protecting Your North Georgia Business

Banking systems remain secure, with institutions like Cadence Bank investing millions in security infrastructure. However, business owners must remain vigilant and never compromise their login credentials. Share fraud prevention education throughout your organization and with family members to create a strong defense against increasingly sophisticated criminal tactics.

How a 22-Year-Old UGA Graduate Built a Mentorship App and Landed 4 Job Offers with One Strategic Move

Mishelle Orrego is rewriting the playbook for Gen Z entrepreneurship—and her story will inspire anyone looking to stand out in today’s competitive job market.

At just 22 years old, Mishelle Orrego has already accomplished what most people take decades to achieve. As the youngest guest ever featured on North Georgia Business Radio, this recent University of Georgia graduate with a degree in computer science and artificial intelligence is proving that strategic thinking and relentless execution trump traditional career paths every single time.

From High School Founder to Google Scholar

Mishelle didn’t wait for graduation to start making her mark. During her junior year of high school, she founded Synchronize, an innovative app that pairs K-12 students with college mentors from their exact geographic area and target schools. Think of it as “Uber for college mentorship”—connecting students who lack guidance with mentors who’ve already walked the path they want to follow.

“A lot of K through 12 students want to go to college, but they don’t have that older brother or sister guidance,” Mishelle explained during her interview with host Phil Bonelli. Her solution? A geographically-based platform that matches students with mentors who attended their same high school and now attend their dream college.

The Strategy That Changed Everything

While balancing her startup with her UGA computer science studies, Mishelle made a decision that would set her apart from every other CS graduate: she skipped the computer science job fair entirely.

Instead, she attended a finance-exclusive job fair in Florida—paid for by Google after she became the first and only person in the Southeast to receive two Google scholarships in 2023. The result? Four job offers, simply because she was the only computer science major in a sea of finance candidates.

“It’s all about positioning,” Mishelle shared. “Everyone there is finance, business, economics—I’m computer science, so it makes it very easy for me to stand out.”

YouTube Star Since Age 14

Before she was building AI applications, Mishelle was building an audience. Since age 14, she’s been creating content on YouTube and TikTok, amassing hundreds of thousands of views monthly. From funny skits to automotive content, she’s mastered the art of digital storytelling—skills that translate directly to entrepreneurship.

But here’s what makes Mishelle different: she never attended a single UGA football game, even during the Bulldogs’ back-to-back national championship runs.

“If you want to be like everyone else, then do what everyone else is doing,” she said. “But if you want to set yourself apart, especially to run your own business, you have to have a lot of accountability in yourself.”

The Next Chapter: Giving Back

Mishelle’s next big goal? Starting a scholarship foundation for low-income and first-generation students who don’t see education as an accessible option. As someone who taught herself Python through YouTube videos, she understands that opportunity doesn’t always come knocking—sometimes you have to build your own door.

“You have to open your own doors,” Mishelle emphasized. “No one is going to create opportunity for you. If you want something, you have to chase it with everything you’ve got.”

Empowering Youth with Safe Places and Second Chances: Tami Wilder’s Mission with Positive Impact International

During this episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Bonelli sits down with Tami Wilder, Executive Director of Positive Impact International, to spotlight the transformative work her organization is doing across Georgia and beyond. With deep roots in community service and a mission to protect and empower underserved youth, Tami’s journey is a powerful blend of leadership, compassion, and unshakable resolve.

Founded 13 years ago by Tami and her mother, Positive Impact International began with after-school programs and expanded into emergency youth housing. When National Safe Place reached out about Gwinnett County’s lack of an emergency youth shelter, Tami said yes—without hesitation. That leap of faith led to a network of safe homes for youth ages 12–21, serving counties all the way to the South Carolina border.

Unlike traditional shelters, their model offers warmth and stability—a home, not an institution. Through partnerships with businesses like QuikTrip, any youth in crisis can walk into a safe place, say “I need a safe place,” and be connected with Tami’s team in minutes.

Tami, a foster parent herself and a long-time trainer for therapeutic foster families, brings a unique perspective to her work. She’s a certified TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) practitioner, focusing on building deep trust as the foundation for transformation—not just with youth, but also her staff.

Beyond the current impact, Tami is dreaming big: a tiny home village for young adults aged 18–22 aging out of care, and “The Royal-Tea Cup,” a British-style tea house that would double as a workforce training center and social enterprise.

Listeners will be inspired by Tami’s unrelenting focus on gratitude, her musical flair as part of the band Twisted Royalty, and her grounded, no-nonsense approach to making a real difference.

Grinola: Faith, Family & Crunchy Dreams with Scott Jones

In this episode of North Georgia Business Radio, host Phil Bonelli goes full-on crunchy as he welcomes Scott Jones, founder of Grinola, a handcrafted granola company born in the hills of White County, Georgia. With a bag of almond cranberry Grinola in hand, Phil dives into a conversation that’s equal parts business insight, family legacy, and faithful entrepreneurship.

What started eight years ago as a simple homemade recipe inspired by Scott’s wife’s radiant smile has grown into a thriving small business. The name “Grinola”—a clever twist on granola and “grin”—sums it up perfectly: this brand is something to smile about.

Scott shares how he refined the all-natural recipe, removed excess sugar, and crafted a unique, crunchy granola bar that quickly won fans at local farmers markets and beyond. But it wasn’t just about perfecting a recipe. For Scott, launching Grinola was also a spiritual calling. He candidly shares how letting go of personal idols and aligning his life with God’s will cleared the path for the business to thrive.

From cottage food licenses to battling for a national trademark, Scott details the hurdles he’s overcome and the legal grit it took to secure his beloved brand name. He credits AI tools for helping him draft a 20-page opposition to a trademark claim—David versus Goliath style—and win.

Grinola’s growth has been steady and intentional. They now operate with a Food Sales Establishment License, use a commercial kitchen in Clayton, and are stocked in local favorites like Green’s Grocery, Mountain Fresh Creamery, Gourmet Goodies in Cleveland, and Betty’s Country Store in Helen. Customers also order nationwide from their website, grinola.shop.

But what really sets Grinola apart? Family. Scott’s daughters help with production and even run their own micro-businesses. His wife, an entrepreneur herself, contributes while running her own nursing agency. They’re building a legacy of hard work, integrity, and joyful living.

The show is filled with laughter, delicious granola, and reminders that success isn’t just profit margins—it’s loving what you do, who you do it with, and why you’re doing it.

Whether you’re an aspiring food entrepreneur, a lover of small-town grit, or just want to know where to get the best granola in Georgia, this episode is for you.

Find Grinola in stores across North Georgia or order online at grinola.shop. One taste and you’ll be grinning too.

Blackjack Coffee Roasters: Bringing Specialty Coffee and Pirate Passion to Gainesville

During this North Georgia Business Radio segment, host Phil Bonelli welcomed the energetic duo behind Blackjack Coffee Roasters — Will Edwards and Julie Gossett — for a caffeinated conversation packed with business insights, origin stories, and the aroma of specialty-grade coffee.

Will Edwards, already a veteran entrepreneur with 20 years of experience running “We Clean,” stumbled into the coffee business while servicing commercial buildings. One day, a client asked him if he could provide coffee for a 300-person office. He didn’t know how—but he said yes. That “yes” kicked off a whirlwind journey of learning, persistence, and eventually, the creation of Blackjack Coffee Roasters.

Julie Gossett joined the venture with a background in farming and small-scale production, bringing precision and passion to the roasting process. As a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, Julie ensures that every bean is treated with care, from sourcing to roasting. Blackjack proudly roasts Grade 1 specialty coffee — the highest quality in the industry — and their attention to detail shows in every cup.

Phil, a self-proclaimed coffee aficionado, raved about their hazelnut toffee iced latte, describing it as “delightful” and “not too sweet,” and praised their cold brew for its smooth, rich kick. Julie broke down coffee science for listeners, explaining how roast levels affect caffeine content and flavor profiles, and walked us through the magic behind blends like “Blackbeard’s Brew” and “Anne Bonny’s House Blend.”

With a pirate-inspired brand and names like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny attached to their roasts, Blackjack Coffee is about more than just taste—it’s about storytelling. Julie and Will have tied the treasure-hunting spirit of pirates to the global journey of coffee, sourcing beans from places like Sumatra, Ethiopia, and Peru, all with distinctive flavor profiles and ethical traceability.

But they’re not just about pirates and great coffee—they’re serious about business too. Blackjack Coffee is now available online at blackjackcoffee.net, in select Gainesville shops like Greens Grocery, Thrive, and even at Mellow Mushroom. They also serve corporate clients with breakroom delivery, helping companies keep employees happy, alert, and energized.

Whether you’re a business looking for premium breakroom coffee or a consumer seeking better beans for home brewing, Blackjack Coffee Roasters has your back. Their commitment to freshness, flavor, and local roots makes them a true North Georgia gem.

Want to energize your office or taste coffee worth walking the plank for? Visit blackjackcoffee.net or stop by their booth at Mule Camp to sample the brews. You’ll be hooked!
