BRX Pro Tip: Acting Like an Owner
Stone Payton: Welcome back to Business RadioX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, today’s topic, acting like an owner.
Lee Kantor: Yeah. This is so important. You have to act like an owner before you become an owner. And that really goes to any kind of place you are in your career.
Lee Kantor: I just interviewed a woman that is a very successful consultant. And one of the things that she said to me that really struck me was that she started behaving like an owner early on. She was going above and beyond early on, before there was even any reason for anybody to think that she was going to be identified kind of as this high potential, as this person that is going to be a leader in the organization.
Lee Kantor: And ownership isn’t just a title or equity in a company. It’s a mindset. It’s a way of thinking. Owners kind of look beyond their job description, and are looking to be proactively solving problems before they’re being asked. They identify where challenges are or opportunities are, and they start taking actions. They’re the ones that are protecting the customer experience. They’re the ones who are protecting the brand. They’re the ones who are going out of their way to kind of help the business grow in ways maybe that the business hasn’t thought about.
Lee Kantor: So, the people who consistently think this way tend to become more and more valuable every single day. So if you’re at a job today that maybe you’re frustrated with, or maybe you would like to be promoted, or maybe at some point you would like to own your own business, the key is, today, find a problem that’s outside your normal responsibilities, and then you take responsibility for helping solve it. The more useful you are, the more that you can solve problems for other people, the more successful you’re going to be no matter what path you take.
