Achieving Culture Excellence: Harnessing AI and Empowering Teams E34

This was a unique episode for the Culture Crush Business Podcast. We are always talking about ways to improve company culture so companies can thrive, and this episode was no different in that aspect. The topic was one that is often left out from the conversation of thriving company cultures, the focus on process improvement and the technology for improving the operations and culture of the company.

We discuss the need to focus on technology and resources that will help with the strategic side of the company in order to treat employees as humans rather than machines, which is essential for preventing burnout and maintaining a motivated team.

Effective leadership involves identifying and leveraging employees’ strengths and interests. This allows them to excel in their roles and contribute to the company’s growth. Offloading repetitive tasks to AI or outsourcing can free up employees to concentrate on their core competencies.

AI can be a game-changer for businesses, especially when handling data-intensive tasks. It can optimize scheduling, automate processes, and even enhance customer experiences, as demonstrated by the example of creating a Taylor Swift-inspired AI bot.

The conversation highlights the need to adapt to rapidly evolving technology. The emergence of new career paths, such as prompt engineering, underscores the importance of staying current and embracing technological advancements.

Many companies use numerous software tools, often without realizing the extent of their tech stack. Lauri Erickson emphasizes the importance of integrating these tools to streamline operations and data management, ultimately saving time and resources.

This episode focuses on a few key takeaways for our listeners:

  • Empower the employees to focus on the true strengths
  • The power of AI in enhancing efficiencies
  • Continuous adaptation to evolving technology
  • Integration of software and tools

Overall, the episode emphasizes the value of fostering a positive company culture, empowering employees, and leveraging outsourcing, technology, and AI to enhance efficiency and employee satisfaction. It also underscores the importance of staying open to new possibilities in the ever-changing business landscape.

Thank you to James Christensen, the President of Gateway Bank, for joining in this conversation and adding his additional insight and stories as the co- host for this episode with Lauri and Ben.

Post-It Note You Need for Bathroom Mirror

The Post-It Note You Need on the Bathroom Mirror

Some folks use a Post-It note in a prominent place, like the bathroom mirror or on their computer monitor, to remind them of their goals and to provide motivation. Here’s a suggestion for what that note should contain to help you to attain those goals. The suggestion may surprise you. The Price and Value Journey is presented by John Ray and produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX®.

TRANSCRIPT

John Ray: [00:00:00] Hello. I’m John Ray on the Price and Value Journey. The Post-it Note you need on the bathroom mirror.

John Ray: [00:00:10] Some folks use the Post-it Note in a prominent place like the bathroom mirror or on their computer monitor to remind them of their goals and to provide motivation to reach those goals. The idea is that if you visualize it, it will happen. For some, visualization might work wonders. For the rest of us, it sets us up for failure and despair. And my golf game is just one example.

John Ray: [00:00:40] Now here we are as I record this episode, we’re approaching the end of the first quarter, 2022, and that Post-it Note with the goals for this year, for some of us, might feel like more of a screaming inditement than encouragement. Maybe we’re even working off a new note, one with more modest aspirations, and we’re feeling guilty because we lowered our sights.

John Ray: [00:01:07] Instead of goals based on sales or number of clients, try this reminder note and see how it fits for you. Stuff I need to quit doing. What should be on this list are the items that you as the owner of your business have no business doing yourself yet you persist. It’s low-level client work. It’s bookkeeping or marketing details. It’s work that’s necessary for the health of your business but it doesn’t mean that you need to be the one to do it even if you’re a solopreneur.

John Ray: [00:01:46] Now, just to be clear, low level doesn’t mean low value. On the contrary, the outcome of a low-level task can often be very high value. By low level, I mean repeatable tasks, which you can teach someone else to do such that you can focus on those items which most need your own attention. Now whatever is on your list of stuff that you need to quit doing, it’s those things that take you away from high-level client work, which is the real value add or the business development work that you never seem to have time for.

John Ray: [00:02:29] Now, I just didn’t come up with this idea myself. W Edwards Deming, who was born in 1900, writing on management and leadership, observed that 85% of the reasons for failure are deficiencies in the systems and process rather than the employee. The role of management, he said, is to change the process rather than badgering individuals to do better. Now, Deming’s management philosophy of total quality management, by the way, was arguably the single biggest idea, which drove Japan’s recovery after World War II.

John Ray: [00:03:15] Now, if we apply Deming’s idea to our own businesses, we might infer that about 85% of the reason we don’t hit our goals for top-line growth arises from a failure of our systems or processes. So if you’re off track on the goals you set for yourself for this year, follow Deming’s idea. Quit badgering yourself to do better first. Tear up that Post-it Note you started the year with and make up a new one. Focus on removing the sand in the gears of your business, the minutia you have no business doing. As you get those details off your plate, you’ll be amazed at the value you’re giving yourself and your business.

John Ray: [00:04:04] I’m John Ray on the Price and Value Journey. Previous episodes of this series can be found at pricevaluejourney.com. And to connect with me directly, you’re welcome to email me, john@johnray.co. Thank you for joining me.

How to Improve Profitability in Any Company, with Dave Boss, The Operations Group, LLC  (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 262)

Gains from business process improvement helps improve profitability in any company, argues Dave Boss of The Operations Group, LLC. Dave joined host John Ray to talk about his business process consulting practice. “North Fulton Business Radio” is produced virtually by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® in Alpharetta.

The Operations Group, LLC

The Operations Group, LLC consultants have been business leaders, with real Profit and Loss responsibility.  Unlike lifelong process improvement professionals, they know that the company exists to serve its customers and to generate profits for its stakeholders.  Hence, process improvement projects are not the priority for most organizations, nor should they be.  The Operations Group consultants don’t fix anything.  Clients do.  They are the experts in performing the work of the company.  Therefore, they are integral to process improvement success, both while The Operations Group consultants are deployed and long after they leave.  They all have day jobs.

Their consultants develop realistic schedules, accommodating the possible limited availability of team members, and the fact that due to customer demand and other priorities, schedules are subject to change.  If a client wants rapid results, and can dedicate the people to work with them, the schedules will be aggressive, but achievable.

They also don’t ask you to drink the Lean or Six Sigma “Kool-Aid”.  If a full-blown Lean Manufacturing implementation is what’s called for, they will do that.  But most organizations thrive better under a gentler approach, incorporating Lean and Six Sigma concepts on a more tactical basis, bringing employees along during a transition from possible disorder, to a continuously learning and improving environment.  The Operations Group can help clients put together a Continuous Improvement Roadmap, that will bring new phases of the program into place as their employee base is ready for them.

Questions/Topics Discussed in this Show

  • What is Business Process Excellence? Isn’t it just the time and motion studies by efficiency experts that have been around since the early 1900’s?
  • What are the methods your company uses to help companies improve profitability? Please explain them.
  • What about functions that aren’t manufacturing, like sales people or doctors? Are you going to tell a doctor how to more efficiently examine her patient, or teach a sales rep how to sell?
  • Once you help a company fix things, what else is to be done?
  • How long does it take for you to know what needs to be done at your next client?
  • But won’t this telling employees how to do their jobs demotivate them, driving them away to other companies?
  • How does a company know they need outside help? What should they be looking for?
  • This also sounds interesting to Manufacturing, even for other types of B2B companies, but surely it doesn’t do much to help in the B2C world?
  • Surely you don’t have expertise in all aspects of business. Do you ever say “no” to a potential client?
  • How can a company engage with you to see if you can help them improve profitability of their business?,
