About Todd Sadow

Born and raised in Texas, Todd Sadow has long been interested in competitive cycling, racing road cycles before moving to Tucson for college and shifting his focus to the growing sport of mountain biking.  Early on, however, he did what many enthusiasts find themselves forced to do – keep their hobby firmly into the “hobby” column and head out to work each morning.

For Todd, work was a rising career in the world of retail real estate development and management company who built and managed mall properties across the United States.  Unlike most, however, Todd made the leap so many dream of: leaving the corporate world to fill a void he saw in the cycling community and pursuing his dream by building a career in the cycling industry hosting signature mountain biking events across the country.

Since that fateful day, his company – Epic Rides – has grown to one of the most recognizable names in the field, hosting events in Arizona, Nevada, Arkansas and Colorado which include its signature 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo race – the longest-running American event of its type – based right here in Tucson.

About Epic Rides

From humble beginnings, the passion project now known as Epic Rides has grown to become one of the most recognizable names in mountain bike events, starting with the organization’s first Tour of the White Mountains and now preparing to host events in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Arkansas.  The organization is perhaps best known for its iconic 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo event, the longest running race of its type in the United States, which will be celebrating its 22nd running in 2022.

With participants ranging from Olympic athletes to documentary filmmakers and local weekend warriors, their events are billed as a platform for personal achievement, camaraderie, challenge and life driving motivation (and satisfaction). Maybe even more notably, they are designed solely to deliver happiness to all involved while spreading the gospel of mountain biking.

About Perimeter Bicycle

Perimeter Bicycling is the nonprofit organization that coordinates and hosts El Tour de Tucson, the organization’s flagship event and one of the largest bicycling events in America. Since its first event in 1983 with fewer than 200 cyclists, El Tour has grown to attract over 6,000 cyclists per year of all ages and abilities, from all around the world.  Cumulatively, more than 270,000 riders have championed the event’s message of charity, community, health, and wellness alongside a strong and committed group of nonprofits and volunteers.  As a result of that teamwork, the event has raised more than $101 million for area charities and non-profits.

Beyond the event itself, El Tour’s finish line/annual Downtown Fiesta brings together cyclists and members of the greater Tucson community for a celebration of charities, community, health, and fitness, and helped further Perimeter Bicycling’s goal of making Tucson/Pima County the nation’s best bicycling region. In 2008, the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) awarded the Tucson/Pima Eastern Region its Gold-Level “Bicycle Friendly” designation for its commitment to providing safe facilities for bicyclists and its support of bicycling for recreation, fitness, and transportation. The LAB renewed the region’s Gold level in 2012. Perimeter Bicycling is actively working with volunteers and staff from the City of Tucson and Pima County to continue a concerted effort to achieve top honors.

About the Business

In 1985, brothers Brian and Garrett Ham started their Tucson landscaping company and called it Santa Rita Landscaping, named after the Santa Rita mountain range they lived near.  Garrett was in his last semester of high school and Brian finishing his bachelor’s degree in Watershed Hydrology at the University of Arizona when Garrett received the firm’s first Contractors license with a $1,000 loan from First Interstate Bank of Arizona, co-signed by their father, to cover the bonding requirements.

The business began in their parents’ barn, which served as their first contractor yard. During the day both partners worked the physical aspect of a landscaping business, installing brick, irrigation, plants and trimming shrubs and each evening they would handle the business side of the company, returning phone calls, drawing plans and doing book work.

By 2005, the company employed 125 Tucsonans, and SRL bought the 4.6 acres at 755 W Grant Road to remodel the building that serves as their headquarters today.  By 2006, the company employed over 190 Tucsonans and launched Santa Rita Environmental and Santa Rita Waste Systems to provide storm water compliance and roll off dumpster services, finally merging in 2012 with Southwest Enviroscapes, Inc. to form one of Tucson’s largest and leading commercial, public and residential landscaping providers.  Throughout, the company has grown via its focus on customer service, ownership thinking, and The Santa Rita Way.

Nice clinicians currently provide healthcare services for over 200 small businesses that encompass 30,000+ members.

Nice’s goal is to enable its care team to treat as many medical conditions as possible. By expanding its offering to include over 550 acute and chronic medications free of charge as well as virtual physical therapy to address the musculoskeletal needs of its patients, Nice is broadening the ways members engage with their Nice provider. Genevieve Swenson, co-Founder and COO, and FNP elaborate. “We want every one of our members to know that we are in their corner. Whether they are healthy, have the sniffles, or are managing chronic health conditions, a Nice healthcare provider is going to be able to engage with them and help them accomplish their goals. Expanding our prescription formulary and adding access to licensed physical therapists are the two newest examples of how we are broadening ways we can help.”

GUESTS:

Joey Rodgers & Solesite Lupu
Founders, President of the Board of Directors
Dancing In The Streets Tucson
88 W. 38TH STREET
Tucson, AZ 85713

Soleste Lupu has been dancing for any audience she could find since she was two years old. As co-founder and co-Artistic Director for Dancing in the Streets Arizona, Soleste works with co-Director Joseph Rodgers to inspire Tucson children to experience joy, creativity, and self-expression through the discipline of ballet.  A Tucson native, she trained ballet locally at the Tucson Dance Academy under Maria Morton, with additional training from Ismet Mouhedin, George Zoritch, Jose Valenzuela, Stephanie Steigers and Neil Cowey.  Versed in both the Royal Academy of Dancing ballet syllabus and the Vagonava syllabus, she has performed with the Southern Arizona Light Opera Company (SALOC) Plain, the University of Arizona Music and Dance Department, the University of Arizona Symphony and the LaMond Dance Ensemble.  In addition to dance and music, she has worked in public policy and advocacy, run a no-kill shelter for cats, and started a family caregiver advocacy organization.

Joseph Rodgers, also a Tucson native, began his studies at the age of 7 when he was discovered at St. Ambrose school by Maria Morton, founder of the Tucson Academy of Dancing.  His early training was in the Royal Academy of Dancing syllabus, and under George Zoritch, of the famed Ballet Russe continued to the San Francisco Ballet School and a 25-year career as a professional dancer.  He has performed with many companies including the Arizona Dance Theater, Ballet Arizona, Feld Ballet New York, Ballet Chicago, and Milwaukee Ballet, culminating in a 2004 televised PBS performance of Der Fledermaus at the Kennedy Center with the Washington National Opera, directed by Placido Domingo.

About the Business

Dancing in the Streets Arizona (DITSAZ) is both a well-appointed ballet studio and a laboratory for success.  Founded in 2008 with a small sum of wedding gift money by husband and wife team Soleste Lupu and Joseph Rodgers, the studio is located in South Tucson – a one-square-mile community that maintains a strong cultural heritage but struggles with high crime rates and poverty. The mission of DITSAZ is to use the power of dance to transform lives using the excitement and discipline of ballet to guide children in developing positive life skills, and to break down cultural barriers and enrich the community’s artistic experience.

Students take classes and perform in professional settings regardless of their income level, physical shape/size, or skill level. DITSAZ has served children with incarcerated parents, victims of abuse, those with serious physical and developmental disabilities, as well as non-traditional ballet students, such as overweight children or those with other physical limitations. Thirty-seven of our students were referred by the Juvenile Court to complete community service, many of whom continued on as students after their terms of service were completed.

Regardless of background or how they became involved, these students have discovered they can do more than they ever thought—not just across the dance floor, but in the classroom, in their family, and in their community. DITSAZ has demonstrated that dance education provides at-risk youth, and all students, a vehicle to experience positive teamwork and discipline, develop friendships that challenge cultural barriers, and most, importantly, experience accomplishments that serve to broaden their sense of life possibilities. No one is ever turned away from DITS if they want to learn.
