Aviary Photo_130500362124405152Gary Kitchen wants to give family caregivers a break!  Seriously!  Born in Pennsylvania, and growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Gary attended the University of Louisville on a Navy scholarship.  After college, he was the Communications Officer on a Destroyer, and then the Executive Officer on a Minesweeper.  After all that excitement, Gary decided to settle down a bit and took a job with Kroger.  Though only with Kroger for about ten years, Gary spent the rest of his career in and around the grocery business.

Gary moved to Atlanta in 1972, About eight years ago, his mother moved from Pennsylvania down to Atlanta.  Having Alzheimer’s, she came down to live with Gary.  After about three years, he found he could no longer adequately care for her, so he moved her to an assisted living community.  Wanting to help out, Gary started holding a charity golf tournament to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.  After his mother passed, he decided to take the momentum he had gained with the golf tournament, and create a non-profit foundation, honoring his mother, and providing assistance to family caregivers coping with a loved one with Alzheimer’s.  About a year ago, Gary retired from his “paying job” to run this organization, “The Laona M. Kitchen Foundation.”  This organization is staffed entirely with volunteers, and exists exclusively to fund respite for families that need a break from caring for their loved one.  To find out more about the Laona M. Kitchen Foundation, or to apply for a break, check out their website at www.lmkfoundation.org, or call Gary at 404-428-1267.

Aviary Photo_130494956833775146N. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community.  A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law.  After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm.  As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection.  But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.”  She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?”  Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369.  Visit her website at www.kellemanlaw.com.

Aviary Photo_130481802255899970Return guest Alton Reynolds wears a multitude of hats!  He has been serving in the “helping professions” both on the clinical and business side of healthcare for nearly 40 years.  A native of New York’s Finger Lakes district, Alton started his career providing psychiatric assessments of Navy and Marine personnel returning from Viet Nam.  He went on to ear his Masters Degree in the Psychology of Learning from Temple University.  Nearly thirty years ago, Alton’s wife, Essy, founded the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody.  While Alton has assisted in providing services in and through Essy’s business for many years, Alton has recently taken his passion for helping people through counseling and hypnotherapy on a more full time basis.

Originally rooted in historical Trasactional Analysis research, Alton counsels his patients to evaluate and address three natural human states:  The parent – focusing on self-nurturance rather than self-criticism, The adult – working on cognitive skills and decision-making, and the child – focusing on joy, happiness, creativity and spontaneity.  Alton acknowledges that hypnotherapy can only be effective is a person wants to change and improve.  It is not mind control or manipulation, but rather a gentle encouragement through the use of relaxation techniques that facilitate identification and change of troublesome behaviors.  Alton notes, “whatever you think about most is generally what you will experience in life”, making it essential to think productive and positive thoughts.

For more information on the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody, visit them on the web at www.hypnosisdunwoody.com, or call them at (770) 390-0444.  To reach Alton directly, call him on his mobile phone at (404) 932-2755.

Bartlett, RobynA rare native Atlantan (Lakewood Heights), Robyn Bartlett has had a lifelong love of learning. Even after raising three children and engaging in a rewarding career, Robyn is still a student, now working completing a doctoral program at Capella University. Working as a Marketing Director with a local Assisted Living Community, Robyn was baffled at her new residents’ reaction to move-in day. Though these new residents seemed to be accepting, even excited, about the new arrangement, moving day was often rocky. In fact, she noticed that on move-in day, the other residents of the community would go to their rooms and shut the door!

Robyn tells us that some residents refused to get of their cars, and one woman even tried to jump out of her daughter’s car on the way to the community! It became obvious to Robyn that move-in day was filled with fear and trepidation for both residents and their families. Not being equipped to deal with this phenomenon, Robyn went back to school and ended up writing her Master’s Thesis on Social Role Theory, Identity, Belief Systems and the Power of Familiarity. This work led her to develop a comprehensive Transition Program that was implemented in a new Assisted Living Community, and it worked – 100% of the time!

Though she founded Life Transition Experts back in 1999, since January of this year, she has been doing this work full time. Listen in on tips for a successful transition, and join her Transition Tips Webinar being held on June 28, from 9am to 12pm. To register, call Robyn at 404-422-7234, or go to her website at www.lifetransitionexperts.com.

Keeton, Anne 2Return guest, Anne Keeton, Founder and President of Grief to Relief, defines grief as “conflicting feelings about a change or end to a familiar pattern or behavior”. While we commonly think about grief in relation to a death, catastrophic injury or illness, grief can surprise us in many more mundane circumstances, like a child going to college, a move, or a change in health status. Sometimes the change can be a good change, but creates mixed emotions in an individual. This is a form of grief!

Handling grief is like having a flat tire. It doesn’t fix itself. There are certain key steps that need to be taken in order to repair the damage. And no one is immune. It will happen to you! And often, loss breeds more loss – “when it rains, it pours”! Listen in as Anne provides some advice about developing a Grief Recovery skill set.

For more information about Grief to Relief, contact Anne at (678) 653-5513, or email her at Anne@GriefToRelief.com. Note that Anne has a new Grief Recovery group class starting on June 23. It will be held in her office in Peachtree Corners.

“The quest to know who we are, where we came from, and how we came to be the family we are now, is a powerful emotional desire, at some point in everyone’s life.”

Dave Savage grew up in southern California in a family that is all about legacy. His Dad has composed a 100 year journal of their family and passed that on to Dave.  The owner of Memory Keepers Video and co-author, with Beverly Molander, of the soon to be released book, “The Best Memorial Services”, Dave has always had a curiosity about how things worked and who people are.He began to help friends record the stories of their families, and the business “just grew from there”.“Family storytelling energizes and uplifts the spirit, honors the past and pays tribute to the people who have shaped your life”.“By recording the stories, with your loved ones, you are more confident that they understand what you are sharing and that they comprehend the emotion you have about the subjects being discussed”.

Memory Keepers Video can accomplish this in several customized formats suited to the particular desires of the client and their family.  It was an easy transition from preserving family legacies to writing “The Best Memorial Services”.He and Beverly have found a way that “makes it far easier and less traumatic for your family to create and agree upon a wonder service or ceremony for your loved one”.They share advice, ideas, experiences and resources to help you create a meaningful service or ceremony.  As an example, Dan tells us to think about your family’s traditions, rituals and ceremonies and find a way to record them so you can pass them on to the future generations.  To contact Dave, call him at (404) 323-8686, send him an email at Dave@davesavage.com, or visit these websites:
