Chad Lewis with ETS Wound Care is a talented leader with experience in medical device product development (concept to post-launch), business development track record, team leadership, project/product management, intellectual property portfolio management, and regulatory strategy who delivers innovative and effective solutions to meet unmet business and clinical needs.

Christopher J. Williams, MD is the founder and medical director of Interventional Orthopedics of Atlanta, Georgia’s primary premier regenerative orthopedics practice and the first Regenexx provider in the State of Georgia.

Originally from Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Williams enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from high school and then after serving honorably in the military, he enrolled in college at the University of North Florida where he graduated with the highest honors of Summa Cum Laude. After his undergraduate career, Dr. Williams spent 4 years in medical school and an additional 4 years of residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Williams completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and he was awarded the resident of the year 3 consecutive years in a row and was voted to serve as the Academic Chief Resident his senior year.

After completing his residency, Dr. Williams did a 1-year fellowship under the direct mentorship of Dr. Christopher Centeno and Dr. John Schultz, two of the founding pioneers in the field of regenerative orthopedics and orthobiologics. During his fellowship, Dr. Williams contributed to the authorship of 3 book chapters and 5 research papers for publication. Because of his passions for research and education, Dr. Williams decided to stay on staff at the Centeno-Schultz clinic for an additional year as an attending physician to allow him the opportunity to continue working with the exceptional research team at Regenexx and the new doctors in fellowship training.

Dr. Williams wholeheartedly believes in a holistic approach to medicine and takes pride in building a partnership with each patient so that they can learn the skills to be able to achieve their functional goals in life.

Some of Dr. Williams interests include traveling, exercising, spending time with family, and art.

Pediatric Health Technologies

This week we had experts on the show talking about developments in Pediatric Health Technologies.  We were joined in studio by Leanne West, Principal Research Scientist at Georgia Tech Research Institute, and Paul Spearman, Chief Research Officer with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  They came by to talk about the innovative collaboration between academic research institutions, Emory and Georgia Institute of Technology, that help accelerate the rate that important technologies can be made available to the pediatric patient population in need.  Carly Kiseleczynk, CEO/Founder of BrainChild Technologies also came by to talk about the intriguing technology that allows parents to have more interactive interaction with young infants through their pacifier-controlled device that interfaces and can control applications and toys through non-nutritional sucking patterns.

We discussed the goals of these important Atlanta research institutions of helping pediatric health providers to treat the unique needs of very young patients.  They have what they call a “Quick Wins” program where they engage with promising technology companies to help them bring their solutions to market within a very-fast 18 months.

Carly talked about how they were able to advance their work on developing an interactive technology that allows infants to learn how to control toys and tablet-based applications with their sucking patterns.  The infants are able to turn on a mobile or night light, or make remote-controlled toys move.  And they’re able to advance language skills through interacting with special tablet-based applications that can provide data on certain developmental milestones.

Both of these initiatives can benefit from financial support to allow them to hasten the pace of their research and make these helpful technologies available to pediatric patients in need sooner.

Hamilton, StacieAn Atlanta native, Stacie Hamilton is a Social Worker in the Cardiovascular section of Emory University Hospital – Midtown.  She received a degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia in 1994, and is only three months from completing her Masters in Social Work at Georgia State University.  When she’s not trying to arrange haircuts for her patients, Stacie provides a wealth of other resources for them, and advises families to be prepared as loved ones age.  She suggests that support structures be identified, and that legal documentation, such as living wills and powers of attorney be put in place.  That way, when the time comes, the family is not operating in “panic” mode.  Stacie can be reached through Emory’s Social Services department at (404) 686-8137, or visit them on the web at www.emoryhealthcare.org.

Duff, JamieJamie Duff has been a social worker for a long time.  In fact, she will tell you she was born into social work.  From an early age, people have confided in her, and come to her for advice and counsel.  So it was only natural that Jamie made a career out of it.  She received a BS in Social and Behavioral Services from University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1992.  She went on to complete her Masters in Social Work at Clarke Atlanta University.  Jamie is a general medical Social Worker at Emory University Hospital – Midtown.  Jamie’s advice to patients and their families is to investigate and purchase a good long term care insurance policy to help cover the high cost of services that will likely be needed as an individual ages.  Jamie can be reached through Emory’s Social Services department at (404) 686-8137, or visit them on the web at www.emoryhealthcare.org.

John Bishop, Crossroads Hospice
John  Bishop, Executive Director of Crossroads Hospice led off today’s show.  John is an Atlanta native with a background in mental health counseling.  In addition to a degree from Ohio State University, John is also a Registered Nurse.  Though he loves his job as executive director, he misses taking his pet parrot out to spend time directly with patients.  John has a passion for helping people that goes well beyond his day to day job responsibilities.  He, and Crossroads Hospice, work closely with the Alzheimer’s and ALS Associations, and John is a board member with Friends of Gwinnett Senior Services (www.fogcss.com).  John can be reached via email at psychranger@yahoo.com, or on his cell phone, which he bravely recited during our interview (you’ll have to listen to get it, though)!  www.crossroadshospice.com

Next, we spoke to Patsy Golden, Social Services Patsy Golden, Emory Eastside HeritageCoordinator for Emory Eastside Heritage Center.  Patsy is part of a unique organization that brings together a full suite of services to evaluate and treat Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and geriatric depression.  She is a certified “Thanatologist” (our word for the day!), meaning she is trained in all aspects of death, dying and bereavement.  In her spare time, she leads a grief support group at Snellville United Methodist Church.  Patsy loves the opportunity to work with family members to assist with and share in the grief and bereavement process.  Each day she lives out the adage, “a grief shared is halved and a joy shared is doubled.”  Patsy can be reached via email at Patsy.Golden@hcahealthcare.com.

Jennifer and Melissa, Plantation South Duluth

Finally, we spoke to the “dynamic duo” from Plantation South in Duluth.  Melissa Mulhall is the Director of Community Relations, and Sarah Biehl is the Activities Director, or in her own words, the “Director of Excitement”.  Melissa and Sarah shared their joys in working with residents and families of residents every day.  They seem surprised that they would actually get paid to go in to work and have so much fun!  (Management take note!)  Both women are committed to enhancing the lives of seniors through both their vocation and their volunteer activities.  Interestingly, both Melissa and Sarah came to Plantation South as a result of volunteer activities.  When they are not working or spending time with family, they both support the local Alzheimer’s chapter, and just recently walked in the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, helping to raise more than $60,000 through the Duluth chapter.  Meliss and Sarah can be reached at Plantation South at (770) 623-0617.  Stop in to visit, or check out their website at www.plantationsouth-duluth.com.
