Adam McCown was born and raised in Arlington, Texas. After graduating from Baylor University, he moved to Seattle and received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. Adam moved to the Ocotillo area of Chandler in 2009 where he worked in retail pharmacy prior to starting Medmetrics. Adam takes a particular interest in helping patients stay healthy, with an emphasis on functional medicine and compounding to help patients achieve their wellness goals. Adam is married to Bryanne who is also a pharmacist. They have two daughters he adores. When not serving patients at Medmetrics, he enjoys traveling, reading, golf, and sports of all kinds.

Taylor Froiland was born and raised in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He moved to Arizona in 2009 and now lives in Chandler in the Ocotillo area. He studied Nutrition at the University of Minnesota which inspired him to pursue his Doctor of Pharmacy from Pacific University in Oregon. Taylor has a passion for Lifestyle Medicine which means he combines vitamins, supplements, nutrition and exercise programs with traditional medicine to help people feel the best they can. He is professionally trained in non-sterile compounding and veterinary compounding. Taylor thinks compounding pharmacy is the future of medicine. Each person’s biochemical makeup varies and being able to compound personalized medications allows us to treat each person in a unique way. When not taking a personal interest in each and every one of his patients in the Chandler area, Taylor enjoys golf, martial arts and traveling.

 Mercer University

Dr. Ashish Advani and Dr. Ted Matthews of Mercer University

Mercer University Health Services

We sat down with Dean and SVP of Health Services, Dr. Ted Matthews, and Dr. Ashish Advani, Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy from Mercer University.  Mercer University’s College of Pharmacy is ranked among the top five pharmacy programs at private institutions in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. The College offers doctoral degrees in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) and pharmaceutical sciences (Ph.D.). The College is one of four health sciences units within the Mercer Health Sciences Center, which also includes the School of Medicine,  College of Nursing, and College of Health Professions.

With an enrollment of more than 650 students and a distinguished faculty of basic scientists and clinicians, the College of Pharmacy houses seven centers focusing on research, teaching and learning. The College’s motto, “A Tradition of Excellence – A Legacy of Caring,” frames its philosophy of providing excellent academic programs in an environment where every student matters and every person counts.

Mercer University is applying an approach to their health sciences programs called, “interprofessional education or IPE”.  This approach brings students from the various health science programs together with those of the others to talk about their respective considerations when approaching certain care scenarios.  This leads to a greater understanding of the other team members of the multidisciplinary team and ultimately, better patient outcomes.

The College of Pharmacy has also developed a technology platform aimed at putting pharmacologic study data and medicine information in the hands of clinicians to facilitate evidence-based decision making.  Developed with support from Mercer University’s College of Pharmacy, InpharmD is a web-based drug information center. With an estimated 20 million pharmaceutical studies available, InpharmD offers access to the health information that healthcare providers and patients need to make informed and improved decisions.

InpharmD provides customized, evidence-based responses within a user-requested time period. By significantly increasing the credibility of the information and substantially decreasing the turnaround time, InpharmD has created a fundamental change in drug information delivery.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Dr. Helen Gelly of Hyperbaric Physicians of Georgia discusses hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

This week we sat down with internationally-known expert on the subject of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Dr. Helen Gelly.  This treatment modality has been available to patients with poorly-healing wounds, thermal injuries, decompression sickness, late effects of radiation, and several other problems for decades.  And while there is a quality body of evidence supporting the use of this treatment for clinically-appropriate patients, many of the patients who could benefit from access to it never get to know it’s available.

This is due in large part to the fact that of ~159 US medical colleges, only ~30 offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound resolution as taught specialties.  That means that approximately 85% of graduating physicians have had very little (if any) exposure to academic information about the modality.  The result is that they often miss opportunities to add the treatment to the patient’s care plan, which in turn delays (or even prevents) these problem wounds from healing.

Dr. Gelly shared information about the history of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and we talked about the physiology of what’s happening during the course of therapy.  We discussed a couple of major groups of patients whose clinical outcomes tend to be significantly improved with access to hyperbaric medicine, diabetic ulcer patients and patients experiencing persistent late effects of radiation.  The aim is to get credible information to the public so that both physicians and patients in need can educate themselves about it.  Atlanta is unique in that both inside the city and in numerous suburbs, patients can receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in hospital-based or UHMS accredited free-standing programs.  It’s also paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance companies for these evidence-based indications.
