Nutrition and Fitness coach to the stars, JJ Virgin came on to talk about Freaky Eater stories from her TV show on TLC. It’s hard to believe that their are two shows about weird eaters. JJ helps those people who eat things like tartar sauce or corn starch all day long – not sofas or coins?

She has discovered that people really have to want to change. She can’t want them to change more than they do – it just won’t work for long – the same is true with people trying to lose weight or get in shape.

Her startegy for helping these Freaky Eaters is to…

  1. Shock them with the extent of their habit
  2. Then show them what will happen to their health if they continue their unhealthy behavior

She is now on the look out for someone addicted to those low cal or 100 calorie snacks – she said that if you want to nominate someone for that for an upcoming show to email Dr Fitness and she will send the info on to JJ.

JJ also wrote the book Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy – she generously shared some her best fitness tips to get those ripped arms. She recommended doing 4-8 minutes of high intensity training several times a week along with strength training several times a week. She also said that you have to move through out the day and not be sedentary. Use a pedometer to get those 10,000 steps.

As fitness events get crazier and muddier than ever we had on our good friend Jeff Graves explains why the Mudathlon may be the dirtiest mud, obstacles and beer oriented fitness event ever. We love the idea of having fun while doing a physical activity – you’re exercising but you think you’re playing so you don’t mind doing it. Absolutely love that concept. If you have the same mindset you will love the whole Mudathlon series.

Jeff said that over the summer there will be a mudathlon in Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati and Cleveland – check the website for dates and exact locations. Every event and course is unique to terrain of that location. These events are crazy in that lets do that again way. He’s got massive monkey bars, cargo nets, watered down hills, lots of tunnels and tires to navigate through and around and of course lots of mud. You can do this event by yourself or even better put a team together and make it a company outing.

People really get into this event – Jeff says the race is PG-13 and the parking lot could get into the R area. You will get muddy and you will have a good time. Three tips for running a mud event like the Mudathlon from Jeff were…

  1. Duct tape your shoes on if you want the have them at the end of the race
  2. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind throwing away – bring a complete change of clothes in your car
  3. Weight lifting gloves  (an old pair) are great to have on the course – especially on the slick climbing obstacles

We interviewed Rob Hurlbut, CEO of Attune Foods, a venture backed functional food company.  Attune Foods –introduced a line of  chocolate probiotics in 2006 then recently purchased  healthy breakfast cereals Uncle Sam and Erewhon to expand their digestive health portfolio. Their products are available in most grocery stores.

Your gut plays an important in your total overall health – he said 70% of your immune system relies on your gut. Rob shared the importance of probiotics for good digestive health and suggested three things you should to in order to maintain good digestive health.

  1. Remove the foods your are allergic to from your diet
  2. Add more fiber into your meals
  3. Make sure you maintain good bacteria (probiotics) in your gut

Since all of the nutrients you consume pass through your gut before they are used by your body it makes sense that good health starts in your gut.

Dr Fitness and her Tracey debated the merits of body weight exercises and how lunges may be the most functional exercise. Tracey just turned 40 (hard to believe) and she says she has to really challenge her body now when she works out. She doesn’t like to run because she feels compassion for her joints

She also updated us on some of the travel she has been doing including her recent trip to England where they couldn’t recognize her British accent. Next up we had on Seth Goldman TeaEO of Honest Tea Dr Fitness’ new favorite beverage the half tea half lemonade lightly sweetened drink. Honest Tea wins awards for being green, for being healthy, for being organic and fair trade friendly. But it is also delicious.

Seth told us what it was like when he started. He took us back in time and into his home whipping up early batches of his lightly sweetened tea with his college professor in his kitchen and then trying to get his local Whole Foods manager to buy it.

If you are having a hard time finding it – it’s probably because Dr Fitness buys them all whenever he finds them. Honest Tea can be found in more and more stores but if you can’t find them near you Seth says to talk to the store manager and ask for it. And be on the look out for a zero calorie lemonade.

What is that you say? Twenty buck for an exercise dvd series that is suspiciously similar to the P90X workout and a fraction of the price. Try it for yourself and see. This exercise video series is produced by Cal Pozo, is hosted by Tom Holland and the nutrition plan is by Tosca Reno. So how bad can it be.

We interviewed John Dull and Michelle Collier the brains behind the Supreme 90 Day exercise video system. This is a workout that is great for beginners and will challenge the most fit professional athlete as well. You do this workout 6 days a week. You use a different dvd each day – so you never get bored. You mix up the workouts to confuse your muscles so they respond better.

They say their Workout system is more intense and less expensive than the P90X exercise dvd package. We’re talking just $20 for the complete set of dvds and nutrition plan – so check it out on their website or buy it in stores everywhere. If you want to get into bikini body shape then give this a try. All you need is a stability ball, some hand weights and twenty bucks – how can you go wrong? Take the Supreme 90 Day Challenge!

Chris Cason, wrote the the book A Guide to Tea. That book got John Paul Lee’s attention and together they founded Tavalon Tea. Chris’ passion for team made him the perfect choice to be the sommelier for Tavalon Tea.The mission for Tavalon has always been to source only the finest teas from around the world and to create unique blends based on the American palate through in depth research. Right now tea is the number 7 selling in the US and Tavalon wants tea to become number 1 (or at least number 6).

On today’s interview Chris shared some great recipes and tips on making iced tea, sangria with tea and other healthy beverages. Tavalon makes awesome blends of loose leaf tea that are healthy and delicious.  Most tea you drink comes from the tea dust from the bottom of the tea barrels – Tavalon only uses the top shelf stuff and you can taste the difference. Go to their website www.tavalon.com and browse around you will see teas that you have never seen before.  Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy think Tavalon Tea is #1 – that’s why they are the official tea of our radio show.
