On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Katie Bell, who leads Gallup’s well-being initiatives, including the
Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Each day (for 25 years) they will poll 1000 Americans and ask them questions about their life, their well-being and their health. This massive undertaking will create a database of health and well-being data that will provide government, business and healthcare leaders with a consistent metric to measure the health, wellness, and prevention needs of the US population. They have to call about 26,000 people each day to get their 1000 interviews. Some things they’ve learned so far are that Colorado is among the best states in terms of well-being and as Jamie Oliver discovered West Virginia scores among the lowest. In terms of jobs – park rangers have among the highest well-being scores while truck drivers and manufacturer line workers have among the lowest. Two good predictors of high school graduation in teens are 1-the belief that there is something better for them outside of high school and 2-having an adult in their lives who believes in them. Check out how your city and state are doing at their website www.well-beingindex.com or at the Gallup website www.gallup.com

He said his family rarely are desserts or went out to eat at restaurants. He recommends that your family eat dinner together. He said that if you go out to a restaurant then enjoy the great food that the chef makes but just don’t eat a lot of it. He said some simple ways to get your kids to eat vegetables are: hide them in pizza and sauces; cook them properly and most importantly get them to get used to eating them when they are young. His go to ingredient is chicken stock – which he always has on hand to make soups and other healthy meals. He even had some dating tips for men – he said women love when a guy can cook a meal for their date. It is a very meaningful gesture that shows that you can take care of and nurture someone else. He told the story of how Herschel Walker (who is on the list) does thousands of push ups and sit ups each day instead of going to the gym. Roy thinks regular men can learn some things from the athletes and celebrities featured in his magazine. For example…train year round; have a passion for getting better and getting in shape and vary your workout so your body doesn’t get used to the same old routine mix things up every 6-8 weeks. own Human Performance Lab at Auburn University. She has a bit of a controversial take on exercise – having debunked the pilates for abs myth. You should hear what she thinks about Sports Specific Training – not a fan. She thinks the Wii Fit is great for sedentary people who are moving from no exercise to something – but for the current active person she says doing an activity in reality will expend more energy and work you out harder than a video game will. But the bottom line for Dr Abs is that some activity is better than nothing so go ahead and use the Wii Fit. In her work she tests the claims of exercise products and publishes them in peer reviewed journals. Sometimes this takes 2 years to do and in that time these faulty devices could have sold millions – so it is frustrating work. She says the ACSM has a quick peer review that can be done in months that trues to address this time issue. She has a new exercise dvd out called Fitness Prescription: Perfect Legs, Glutes & Abs” This dvd illustrates why she is called Dr Abs.
