Andrea Accoo is a return guest to Eugeria! Radio. She was born, raised and educated in New Jersey, attending Bloomfield College to earn her undergraduate degree, and attending Rutgers University to get her Masters in Social Work. Andrea moved to Atlanta in 1999. Andrea took a position with Golden Living in 2004, and spent 8 years in the skilled nursing environment. In 2009, Andrea was awarded the honor of Social Worker of the Year by the Georgia Healthcare Association. After more than a decade with Golden Living, Andrea decided to accept the position of Life Guidance Director at Atria of Buckhead. She is primarily responsible for Atria’s Memory Care Community.

Joining Andrea today is Tae Stallsworth. Tae hails from Mobile, Alabama, attended Bishop State to get her RN degree, then Springhill College to get her Bachelors degree in Pre Law. Today, Tae is the Nurse Resident Services Director at Atria. She is fundamentally responsible for overseeing the well being of every resident in the community. Andrea tells us that one of the differentiators at Atria is the fact that there is both a social worker and an RN working together to provide the best possible service for each and every resident.

Three Griswold Home Care Caregivers win National Awards!

Six months ago, the National Corporate staff of Griswold Home Care asked each of its 175 offices to submit names of Caregivers that would be recognized nationally from amongst more than 10,000 Caregivers working with Clients of Griswold Home care. There were three awards to be given, with a first, second and third place, and “honorable mentions” for each award. The awards were:

Caregiver of the Year
Mentor Award
Self Development Award

The Atlanta Northeast and Lanier offices of Griswold Home Care submitted three Caregivers as candidates for these awards. Today’s show celebrates the fact that all three Caregivers nominated received a national award!

Sharon McCullough, on our registry for 17 years, was nominated for both the Self Development Award and the Mentor award. These nominations stemmed from a very difficult client for whom Sharon developed an approach to care that helped educate herself, her fellow Caregivers, and the Client’s family. The results were remarkable, moving the Client from a place of resistance and combativeness to peace and positive interaction with those around her. From a pool of 10,000 Caregivers, Sharon won 1^st place for the Self Development Award, and 2^nd place for the Mentor award.

Patrice Newkirk was a self-starter from the moment she joined us in 3008. Her very first case had her driving 36 miles one way 5-6 days per week. Typically dealing with difficult clients, Patrice has taken the initiative to learn about the things that interest and affect her clients, whether or not she had a personal interest in the subject. She has also educated herself on the various health conditions from which her clients suffer so that she can better relate to their experience, and so that she can quickly recognize the symptoms of a worsening condition. For this, Patrice was awarded 2^nd place for the Self Development award.

Elaine Lawson has demonstrated over and over, in the seven years with Griswold Home Care, that she is a “caregiver’s caregiver”! With compassion and determination, she has exemplified the meaning of the word “caregiver” by keeping her clients comfortable, informed, active and safe. She routinely goes “above and beyond the call”, even spending her own free time rushing over to help her clients whenever they call for her. Consequently, Elaine has received an “honorable mention” as the overall National Griswold Home Care Caregiver of the Year.

Blake Hawkins is a North Georgia native! He went to the University of Georgia, then later to Florida State. After graduation, Blake spent a number of years with Florida’s Lee County Recreation Department, then moved back to his native Georgia to work for Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation. About five years ago, Blake fulfilled a lifelong dream of going into business with a group of investors to open a local Sports Bar in downtown Grayson, The Hail Mary Sports Pub. Blake says the name came from the notion that the investors put all their money into this venture, kind of like throwing up a “Hail Mary” pass in a football game.

During his time at Gwinnett County, Blake became acquainted with Gary Galloway and Gwinnett County Senior Services through a number of cooperative events. Serving the seniors of Gwinnett County is important to Blake, particularly as he deals with care issues for his own parents.

To that end, Blake is proud to host the Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services 4^th Annual Shrimp & Crawfish Boil this coming Saturday, May 19. From the other end of Atlanta, Ginger Couch is also a Georgia native! Growing up in South Fulton County, Ginger attended La Grange College for her undergraduate work, then went on to West Georgia College for her Masters. To help with her college expenses, Ginger worked part time as an Activities Director in an assisted living community, as well as a Med Tech. Like Blake, she also dealt with family aging issues as her family moved her grandmother into a community in Lithonia.

Today, Ginger is the Regional Director of Community Relations for the Principal Senior Living Group. Principal Senior Living Group owns and operates five unique assisted living communities in the metro Atlanta area, including Douglasville, Newnan, Roswell, Covington and Stockbridge. New communities are planned in the north metro area in the next year or so. Most operate under the name Benton House. The Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services (Friends) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer-run organization dedicated to raising funds to privately support or supplement select senior programs in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Gwinnett County has the second largest senior population in the state. Past (Jennifer Thilo, Executive Director of Delmar Gardens), Present (Brad Culp, Owner of Griswold Special Care) and Future (John Winters, Founder of Cornerstone Financial Partners) Friends Board Presidents got together to discuss the upcoming 10^th Annual Silent Auction, benefiting Gwinnett County Senior Services.

This year’s event is themed “Going for the Gold for Seniors”, and will be held next Thursday, April 26 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at Delmar Gardens, 3100 Club Drive in Lawrenceville. Chris Smith is a fourth-generation Bostonian and a descendant of Governor William Bradford (Mayflower). After majoring in business at Boston College, she moved to Dallas and was married in 1977. Chris worked in several start-up companies with her husband, spanning restaurants, pest control and real estate. Chris then decided to pursue her passion for helping people.

Having looked up to her grandmother, who was a nurse and one of the finest people she had ever known, Chris endeavored to emulate her. All her life, Chris had been a caretaker and enjoyed making a difference in peoples’ lives. Being a baby boomer, Chris is very cognizant of our aging population and for a long time has had a keen interest in seniors.

A dear friend told Chris of a friend who owned a senior living community and needed help with marketing. They met and there was an instant connection. Chris has been part of ParkGate for a year and finds working with people in this industry to be one of the most gratifying experiences that she could have hoped for. The people in the elder care profession have proven to be kind-hearted, caring, attentive and selfless. Born and raised in Boston, Lois Ricci has been a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner for 40 years. She started her nursing career working night shifts in the ICU at a hospital in Missouri. While there, she was asked to teach nursing assistants in a nursing home. She quickly realized that she loved working with the elderly (and didn’t love working the night shift)! She went on to do graduate work in Gerontology, and earned a doctorate in education. She recently spent three years with the University of Georgia Institute of Gerontology, and now is teaching courses at Kennesaw, University of Georgia and Clayton State University.

Lois also sits on the board of the Georgia Gerontology Society. This is an organization that provides a wide variety of educational resources to its members, and to the community. In addition, the Georgia Gerontology Society holds two educational events each year. On March 16, the Society is hosting its Spring workshop, entitled Palliative Care: Bringing the Pieces Together. This event will be held at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in the Eversole Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The cost is $50, and lunch and parking are provided. Growing up in the great state of Idaho, Kevin Reitz was a Boise State Bronco fan before it was fashionable to be a fan. Does that make him a hipster? After graduating from Boise State, Kevin took a position in the Enterprise Car Rental Management Training program. He later had an opportunity with a small software company selling crime scene and accident reconstruction software (yes, it really exists and no, I’m no making it up). As the company launched an initiative into the private sector, Kevin was asked to relocate to the Dallas area. About three years ago, he became aware of a sales position with a local assisted living facility. After only 8 months, Kevin was asked to take on the Executive Director’s role at a sister community. During this time, Kevin realized that the senior services market offered another dimension of meaning to his career.

About a year and a half ago, Kevin moved again for the opportunity to work at Griswold Special Care, a non-medical homecare provider serving the Dallas metro area. Kevin and his wife, Shelley, recently became the owners of the Dallas North Office of Griswold Special Care. Kevin tells us he and Shelley had often talked and dreamed of owning their own business, and now that dream has become a reality. A rare Atlanta native, Chris Brand has been involved in helping disabled adults and seniors for as long as he can remember. As a young man, he had a friend of the family whose son suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. He watched the family’s struggles until the son died at the age of 19. This gave him a first-hand look at how difficult it can be for a family to deal with the disability of a loved one, particularly with respect to independence and mobility issues.

Interestingly, Chris began early in his career by volunteering for Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC). He was quickly hired by the founder of the organization, and spent three years as their donations coordinator. Moving on to broaden his experience, Chris left FODAC for a few years. In 1999, he returned as a program manager. He has been there ever since, and is now the President and CEO of the organization.

FODAC was founded in 1986 to assist families of disabled adults and children in accessing both equipment and services to facilitate accessibility and independence. FODAC fills 3,600 requests, distributing over 5,000 items each year from its 65,000 square foot facility in Stone Mountain. The retail value of all medical equipment that has been given away now totals over $60 million! Yohance Parker knows how to communicate! After graduating from Union College in Kentucky and spending a few years teaching physical education, Yohance entered the business world as a sales representative. After realizing that he (by his own admission) “wasn’t very good” at it, he started studying the art of communication. Yohance spent a number of years then working in a skilled nursing facility environment, both in a service and sales role. During this time, he developed a passion for serving seniors, and particularly in applying his communications skills to this population. After years of researching, observing and putting what he learned into practice, Yohance saw great improvements in his performance and realized that he could make a difference by teaching others how to be better communicators. Yohance is the Founder of “A Better You” and now coaches groups and individuals on the “Art of Communication” (also the title of his upcoming book due out in January).
