Originally from Boston, Tania Becker spent a good bit of her childhood in Paris.  She moved to Manhattan at the age of ten.  Until 1987 she was a real estate agent in Manhattan.  In 1987 Tania married Kip Becker, and moved to Atlanta.  About seven years ago, her husband, in his early 50s at the time, died suddenly of a blood clot during knee surgery.  Faced with a gaping hole in her life, Tania needed something different to do.  While reading the New York Times one day (once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker…)she came across an article describing a program of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers.  Intrigued, Tania did more research, and decided to match her love for art and her formal art training with a mission to serve those dealing with the harsh realities of Alzheimer’s.  Tania is the Founder and Director of Arts4Alzheimers, a non-profit initiative to help bring meaning and happiness to early stage Alzheimer’s patients that stay in their own homes.  One of the primary outlets for her mission is a weekly class at the Spruill Center for the Arts in Dunwoody.  To find out more, visit www.arts4alzheimers.com, email Tania directly at Tania@arts4alzheimers.com, or call her at 404-492-6181.

Barry’s background in counseling and therapy was the catalyst to his new career in coaching.

Focusing on the senior communities, Barry now helps seniors through individual life coaching and group work shops. Aging With Hope provides many programs that can help support seniors and their communities. To contact Barry and Aging With Hope, you can call 972-914-9107 or email barryteller@gmail.com. Laura Carr is a native of Oklahoma City, OK and a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma. She is well traveled having lived in Oklahoma City, Houston, San Diego, San Francisco (twice) and Dallas (twice). Like many of us, Laura entered the senior services industry after she was affected on a personal level when her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 1995, Laura moved from San Francisco to Oklahoma to help her parents navigate the confusing waters of Medicare, Veteran’s Benefits and other resources. Through this personal experience (“nightmare” as she calls it) Laura recognized that there is a great need for people to help seniors find options for care.

Today, Laura provides durable medical equipment and helps seniors take advantage of the state’s Senior Telecommunications Assistance Program, which provides free phones for those that have a sight or hearing impairment. Laura is also the Senior Services Liaison for her church, Skillman Church of Christ.

Skillman Church of Christ is hosting Senior Adult Healthfair on September 29 from 10am to 1pm, and is extending an invitation to the Eugeria! Radio listening community.   Skillman Church of Christ is located at 3120 Skillman Street in Dallas.   Visit them on the web at www.skillmanchurch.org.  To contact Laura, you can reach her by phone at 214-388-0088 or by emailing her at lauracarr@prodigy.net.

Gwen Massey was born and raised in Tyler, Texas. After completing her BSN at the University of Texas at Tyler, Gwen worked as nurse across many different disciplines. After experiencing the benefits of home health and hospice care firsthand with her grandmother, Gwen became a hospice nurse.  After a number of years in hospice nursing, Gwen felt the tug of entrepreneurship, wanting to provide a unique service, filling a need she observed in the senior community.  The result was the genesis of Senior Care Finder and Consultants two years ago. Recognizing that finding the proper services can be a challenge for seniors and their families, Gwen stepped in to fill this need.

With over 30 years of experience as an RN, Gwen assists seniors and their families identify their needs, helping them find the proper care and services to fit those needs. Gwen can be reached by phone at 214-546-1935 or by email at info@theseniorcarefinder.com. You can also visit their website at www.theseniorcarefinder.com.

Born, raised and educated in south central Louisiana, Janice Simien has spent a good bit of her career helping seniors as they transition from their own homes to independent and assisted living communities.  She started this work as the result of a friend that invited her to investigate a career helping seniors.  Today Jan is the Community Relations Director for Emeritus at Sandy Springs Place, a memory care community in Sandy Springs.  Emeritus at Sandy Springs Place is a 52 room community with four wings that provide care for residents in each of the three stages of dementia.  Jan tells us that she loves her job because she recognizes that families are delegating a very important role when they trust Emeritus with the care of their loved one.

To arrange a tour of the Emeritus campus, please call Jan at 770-650-8800.  The community is located at 1262 Hightower Trail in Sandy Springs.  You can also check them out on the web here.

Upon graduating with a Masters in Business Administration from Indiana University, Brad Culp would not have predicted that he would end up in the senior homecare industry.  Prior to acquiring the Atlanta Northeast Office of Griswold Special Care, he spent the bulk of his career in management consulting.  About nine years ago, Brad began investigating small businesses to acquire.  After a lengthy search, he and his wife Leasa found an opportunity to combine business and mission, as Ginger O’Shea, the founder of the Atlanta Northeast Office of Griswold Special Care decided to retire.  A year later, Brad opened the Dallas North Office of Griswold Special Care, now managed by Kevin Reitz and Dennie Moore.  Looking back, Brad says, “I love being in this business, making an impact on peoples’ lives every day!”

About five years ago, Brad was introduced to Sam Grass through a mutual acquaintance.  After a number of conversations about the home care business, Brad and Sam decided to team up to expand the coverage of the business to Northern Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties.  Though we try to ignore the fact, Sam was born, raised and educated in West Virginia.  Sam spent 20 years in the managed care industry before determining very deliberately that he wanted to be in the homecare business.  Eugeria! Radio has adopted Sam’s mantra as its closing for every show:  If the youth of this nation is its greatest national resource, then it stands to reason that the seniors of this nation are its greatest national treasure.”  Sam has committed his career to preserving this treasure!

To find out more about Griswold Special Care, call either Sam or Brad at (770) 908-0707, or visit them on the web at www.gscatlanta.com.

Reitz, Kevin compressedKevin Reitz started his career in Boise, Idaho, working for a small software company selling accident and crime scene software.  Kevin attend Boise State University, earned a Marekting degree, and remains a rabid Broncos fan.  After moving to Dallas, the company Kevin started his career with was acquired, and his division of the company was disbanded.  Looking for another sales and marketing opportunity, Kevin accepted a position with a small assisted living community.  He was quickly promoted to Executive Director of a larger community.  Six months ago, Kevin moved again, accepting a position as Director of Sales and Marketing for Griswold Special Care.  Kevin observed the need for high quality in-home care firsthand when his great grandmother slipped at the bottom of her driveway, breaking a hip.  He acknowledges that most of his clients desparately want to stay in their own homes, surrounded by their memories and maintaining their independence as long as possible.  Kevin tells us that Griswold Special Care is committed to providing exceptional service at affordable rates to facilitate these seniors to realize their desire to stay in their own homes.  To find out more about Griswold Special Care, call Kevin at (972) 554-0700, email him at kevin@gscdallas.com or visit the website at www.gscdallas.com.

Rogers, Greg compresssedAfter graduating from Baylor University in 1993 with a Masters of Business Administration in Management, Greg Rogers took a position with Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals working in sales, marketing and branding.  Of the 11 years Greg spent with Lilly, nine of them were in the area of neurosciences.  It was an area that spoke to his heart, and prepared him for his current position as the CEO of Integra Hospital in Plano.  Integra employs a unique model centered around neurological rehabilitation and recovery.  Most of their patients are admitted as the result of a stroke or brain injury, rather than for an orthopedic condition.  The difference is that 80% of the therapy is administered on a one on one basis, rather than in a group setting.  They have their work cut out for them as they “retrain” the brain to perform common functions.  Greg sees his work at Integra as ministry and mission, and he believes Integra’s motto, “Restoring Health, Restoring Hope”.  Visit Integra’s website at www.integrahospitalplano.com, or call them a 972-428-1740 for a tour!

Winters compressedJohn Winters was born and raised on the south side of Philadelphia.  After earning and MBA in Finance from LaSalle University, John married his wife Joan and began a career with AT&T in the area of finance, specifically mergers and acquisitions.  After spending time all over the Northeast, Europe, Saudi Arabia and South Korea, John finally found his way to Atlanta.  At the time, he became interested in financial services, and eventually started Cornerstone Financial Partners, LLC.  John has recently been appointed Planning Commissioner, District 1, for Gwinnett County.  He is also the current president of Gwinnett Council for Seniors, and a member of numerous boards, including Friends of Gwinnett County Senior Services.

Thornberry compressedJohn’s partner at Cornerstone Financial Partners is Tim Thornberry.  Tim was a military brat, growing up doing hard time in Hawaii and Southern California!  He followed in his father’s footsteps.  After attending North Georgia College, he joined the Marine Corps Reserves.  He has served in two tours in Iraq.  He is currently the senior service officer for the American Legion in Duluth, and is the President of Sentinels of Freedom Gwinnett, working to bring “wounded warriors” home to Gwinnett County.  Tim and John’s business is committed to providing their clients conservative asset management and wealth protection.  Their business often leads them to pro bono advocacy work for Gwinnett County’s seniors.  Thanks, Tim and John for what you do in your community!  View their website at www.yourfinancialcornerstone.com, or contact them at 678-730-6100.

Massey, Dawn compressedAnother native to her state, Dawn Massey was born and rasied in Lithonia, Georgia.  Dawn is the Owner and Executive Director of The Yellow Brick House, an assisted living and memory care facility in her home town of Lithonia.  The building she uses to host her business is familiar to her from an early age.  In fact, it was the home of her grandmother.  In 1988, when her grandmother needed care, there were few options.  The family decided to take matters into their own hands, and opened The Yellow Brick House.  It was the very first licensed assisted living community in DeKalb County.  It is unique in that it is a small intimate facility that provides an atmosphere akin to “family care”.  To reach Dawn, or schedule a tour, call her at (770) 483-4044, email her at dawn@yellowbrickhouse.com, or visit her website at www.yellowbrickhouse.com.
