Innovations in Heart Health

This week, for Week 5, we focused on innovations in heart health.  Emory physician, researcher, and professor, Dr. Omar Lattouf came by to share about research he’s been working on developing  new techniques for some challenging heart disorders, and an exciting project he’s working on that is aimed at reducing the number of patients who die from cardiometabolic syndrome.  Dr. Lattouf’s work on how conduction problems are treated by insertion of pace makers using a minimally-invasive approach has helped improved outcomes for countless critically-ill patients.  Dr. Lattouf talked about their soon-to-launch study on an application designed to help patients with, or at risk for, cardiometabolic syndrome.  The application will empower patients to track key vital signs and other health information and make decisions that will improve key factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, and more.  As Dr. Lattouf shared his personal story about his own family’s experience with heart disease, his passion for helping fight heart disease, which in large part is preventable, was obvious.

Robert Arkin, CEO and Founder of Sensiotec joined us to talk about the way they are using technology and health data to provide clinicians the ability to monitor key vital signs and patient movement patterns in a hands-off way.  He talked about how he has long held a desire to help his community on a large scale that he knew that being involved in developing healthcare innovations provides the best way to do that.  Robert described how their device uses a special radar technology that is able to measure body movements and even internal organ function, providing real-time vital signs and patient movement patterns.  Their technology’s algorithms enable providers to get a degree of predictive information that could potentially help avoid patient falls/injury, or even detect troublesome trends in vital signs that could enable proactive care decisions that could prevent a serious cardiovascular event.

These two health innovators discussed the additional resources they need that could facilitate the acceleration of their respective work with regard to making their solutions available to patients on a larger scale.   We are pleased to support their work by helping them tell their story.

Amber Chaney TwitterFacebook

I am grateful everyday that I get to make wonderful films in the city where I grew up. Because of the Hunger Games and the Walking Dead, I got lucky enough to not HAVE to move to LA to start a career.

My soon-to-be husband and I own Sean’s Harvest Market in midtown Atlanta. If I wasn’t going to be an actor, I wanted to be a chef. I love that I get to exercise that side of me… Make biscuits and gravy for the cafe every morning and also get to do great roles like Abby Miller. I have three wonderful jobs.

My main job is mom. Our children go to Atlanta City Schools and we are big supporters of the public school system. We are big supporters of Atlanta overall. You’ve never met a bigger Falcons fan in your life than my Sean Germain.

The tax incentives to bring more film industry here, have created jobs and a new way for people to view what was once considered “where the Dukes of Hazard are from”.

I am in Devil’s Knot slated to release in the States some time this year. The film is about the West Memphis Three who were accused of murdering young boys in West Memphis Arkansas, and found guilty for a crime they did not commit. I play a small role opposite Colin Firth and act as a sort-of spokes person for the town, expressing displeasure over his character aiding the three young men on trial.

Scary movies scare me. I’m terrified of scary movies. That said, Chris gave me a fantastic opportunity to play a role to show my range. Abby Matthews has cancer and it was a challenge to play frail/weak, when Abby is so strong and tough in her soul. Plus I got to work with Rob Pralgo and Michael Harper. And I got to drive home to my own house and sleep in my own bed and snuggle with my kids when I got home from filming. I can’t tell you how appreciative I am that Chris asked me to play Abby Matthews.

I get to live in a town with a booming film industry for my work, near the market we own and operate daily, and in the district our kids go to school. I get to make biscuits and then go to work with Nicholas Brendon, or Jennifer Lawrence, or Colin Firth and then sleep next to my groom every night.

Imma lucky lady in the ATL.

Erin Levin/Imba Means Sing LinkedinTwitterFacebookinstagram

Erin Levin is a Peabody and Emmy award-winning humanitarian journalist and filmmaker. She first fell deeply in love with Africa and its people on her assignment to Madagascar with the Peace Corps. Her production and outreach experience includes ABC, CNN and with non-profits around the world.

The summer before her Peace Corps assignment, Erin served as outreach coordinator for Dispatch, the top-selling indie rock band. It was then that she met the African Children’s Choir for the first time and the dream of Imba Means Sing was planted.

At CNN, Erin worked closely on the 2008 election coverage, found a niche in covering Africa, musical activism and the changing face of homelessness. She became an abolitionist through her coverage of human trafficking. Erin also worked as the Filmmaker & Community Manager at Better World Books, an online social enterprise bookstore, galvanizing brand ambassadors, and representing the company at events like TED. During her time with Better World Books, she learned more about the global education crisis, further motivating her to produce Imba Means Sing, in order to bring awareness to the issue.

For the three years it will take to create Imba Means Sing, Erin is devoting her time to fundraising, marketing and producing the film. She also continues her activism through regular columns for Huffington Post, Paste and Rejuvenate magazines.

Erin is a proud wahoo from the University of Virginia and honored to be an Atlanta native. She loves: making new friends, adventuresome travel, live music and yoga.
