Sheri-Maddox1-150x150A rare native Atlantan, Sheri Maddox attended Georgia State University, earning an undergraduate degree in business.  She started her career in sales.  Not too long after graduation, Sheri’a grandmother passed away.  Her grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001, and needed to move out of his house to a community where he could get the care and attention he needed.  As Sheri became involved in her grandfather’s care, she realized how much she felt called to work as an advocate for seniors.

Today, Sheri is the Director of Community Relations for Bickford of Buckhead.  She loves the fact that Bickford is family-owned, and that they live their motto, “enriching happiness”.

Sheri also advocates for seniors through her volunteer work with the Alzheimer’s Association.  She got involved with this organization as a result of her grandfather’s diagnosis, and has found a place where she can really make a difference.  Our listeners can help Sheri make a difference by attending a terrific evening of food, cocktails and a special concert by jazz artist Spencer Day on September 6, at 7pm at Center Stage.  Tickets are $30, and can be purchased at www.ticketalternative.com

Additionally, Sheri is also very involved in Atlanta’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, being held on September 27 starting at 8:30 am at Atlantic Station.  To get more information or register a team, visit www.alz.org.  To find out more about Bickford of Buckhead, call 404-531-0145, visit their website at www.enrichinghappiness.com, or send Sheri an email at Sheri.Maddox@enrichinghappiness.com.

Collins, EricaHaving attended Michigan State University, Erica Collins graduated with a degree in Communications and went on to earn a Master’s degree from Loyola University in Healthcare Administration and Marketing.  After a stint with the University of Chicago Hospital, she relocated to Atlanta and began looking for a position that blended her sales experience with her passion for healthcare.   For the past 13 years Erica has been employed with Peachford Hospital where she is currently the Director of Business Development.

In the time that Erica has been with Peachford, the hospital has grown from a 184 to a 246 bed facility.  She attributes this growth to a change in the public’s perception. Erica is a strong advocate for getting the word out that, “It’s OK to seek treatment for mental disorders”.

Peachford Hospital is one of the premiere providers of mental health and chemical dependency treatment in Atlanta.  Peachford’s ability to treat individuals from as young as age 4 to individuals well into their senior years makes Peachford unique. Terry BowserTerry Bowser was born and raised in southwest Pennsylvania.  After earning a degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Terry was vacationing in Myrtle Beach, fell in love with the south, and never went back north.  He’s now been in Atlanta for 30 years.  Today, Terry is a Reverse Mortgage Advisor for CBC National Bank.  Joining Terrry in the studio this morning is Dan Diaddigo, Director SI – Group Mortgage Banking.  Dan moved to the Atlanta area when he was 10, and earned a degree in Broadcast News from the University of Georgia.  Very quickly Dan migrated to the mortgage industry, and has worked in the industry ever since.

Terry notes that the reverse mortgage loan is a very safe, payment-free way to access the equity in your home.  He also notes that it is a non-recourse loan that will allow a borrower to live in the home for as long as he or she lives.  An interesting side-note is that a reverse mortgage may not necessarily be used for living expenses or healthcare expenses, but could alternative be used as an asset preservation technique.

To hear more about reverse mortgages or CBC National Bank, please contact Terry Bowser at 404-642-6021, or email him at terry.bowser@cbcnationalbank.com.  Dan Daddigo can be reached a ddiaddigo@cbcnationalbank.com.

Healing Train (2)Matt Zlotnick’s father was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2006. Matt soon realized that his father’s fight to endure the treatment was only half the battle. It took a tremendous amount of energy to get to and from the numerous rounds of rigorous treatments needed. It was taking a toll on his father, family and friends. Taking time off work and having to call various people to ask for help– the cancer had not only invaded his father’s body but attacked the lives of family and friends. During this time Matt made a decision to help others that were also fighting this beast and reached out to his college friend, Josh Needles. CEO of Needles Solutions, Josh is a leader in the engineering wireless network industry. Josh saw the compassion and drive in Matt to help the critically ill and he knew that ‘change was going to happen and felt he could make it happen faster’. With Josh’s help, two years ago Matt started The Healing Train, a non-profit, 501c3, organization.

After the organizational process, both Matt and Josh knew that they could not physically run a transportation company, so The Healing Train partnered with Greene World Wide Transportation to provide free, professional and reliable transportation to and from appointments for those fighting cancer or other ailments. This transportation is 100% funded by charitable donations provided by local businesses. So, donations are critical in reaching and helping those in our community that need it most!

Matt and Josh have found a niche in the integrated healthcare delivery system that helps lessen the burden on many who need help getting to and from potentially life saving medical treatments. For those that might need The Healing Train’s service, they can be reached at www.thehealingtrain.wordpress.com.

Aviary Photo_130494956833775146N. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community.  A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law.  After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm.  As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection.  But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.”  She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?”  Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369.  Visit her website at www.kellemanlaw.com.

Aviary Photo_130481802255899970Return guest Alton Reynolds wears a multitude of hats!  He has been serving in the “helping professions” both on the clinical and business side of healthcare for nearly 40 years.  A native of New York’s Finger Lakes district, Alton started his career providing psychiatric assessments of Navy and Marine personnel returning from Viet Nam.  He went on to ear his Masters Degree in the Psychology of Learning from Temple University.  Nearly thirty years ago, Alton’s wife, Essy, founded the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody.  While Alton has assisted in providing services in and through Essy’s business for many years, Alton has recently taken his passion for helping people through counseling and hypnotherapy on a more full time basis.

Originally rooted in historical Trasactional Analysis research, Alton counsels his patients to evaluate and address three natural human states:  The parent – focusing on self-nurturance rather than self-criticism, The adult – working on cognitive skills and decision-making, and the child – focusing on joy, happiness, creativity and spontaneity.  Alton acknowledges that hypnotherapy can only be effective is a person wants to change and improve.  It is not mind control or manipulation, but rather a gentle encouragement through the use of relaxation techniques that facilitate identification and change of troublesome behaviors.  Alton notes, “whatever you think about most is generally what you will experience in life”, making it essential to think productive and positive thoughts.

For more information on the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody, visit them on the web at www.hypnosisdunwoody.com, or call them at (770) 390-0444.  To reach Alton directly, call him on his mobile phone at (404) 932-2755.

Joining us on the show today is repeat guest, Prasant Desai, Founder and President of Ability Rehab.  Prasant earned a business degree at Southern Miss, then went on to earn his Masters in Public Health.  When he moved to Atlanta about 4 years ago, he conceived of the idea for Ability Rehab, and now offers a full range of outpatient services, including Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies.  They also provide on-site treatment fo both Assisted Living Communities and Adult Day Care Centers.

Bartlett, RobynA rare native Atlantan (Lakewood Heights), Robyn Bartlett has had a lifelong love of learning. Even after raising three children and engaging in a rewarding career, Robyn is still a student, now working completing a doctoral program at Capella University. Working as a Marketing Director with a local Assisted Living Community, Robyn was baffled at her new residents’ reaction to move-in day. Though these new residents seemed to be accepting, even excited, about the new arrangement, moving day was often rocky. In fact, she noticed that on move-in day, the other residents of the community would go to their rooms and shut the door!

Robyn tells us that some residents refused to get of their cars, and one woman even tried to jump out of her daughter’s car on the way to the community! It became obvious to Robyn that move-in day was filled with fear and trepidation for both residents and their families. Not being equipped to deal with this phenomenon, Robyn went back to school and ended up writing her Master’s Thesis on Social Role Theory, Identity, Belief Systems and the Power of Familiarity. This work led her to develop a comprehensive Transition Program that was implemented in a new Assisted Living Community, and it worked – 100% of the time!

Though she founded Life Transition Experts back in 1999, since January of this year, she has been doing this work full time. Listen in on tips for a successful transition, and join her Transition Tips Webinar being held on June 28, from 9am to 12pm. To register, call Robyn at 404-422-7234, or go to her website at www.lifetransitionexperts.com.
