E13 Jeremy Wood Sr Agile Coach Matrix Resources

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Joe Pusz, PMO Joe has a great discussion with special guests Jeremy Wood, Sr Agile Coach  with Matrix. Joe and Jeremy have a light-hearted, but informative, discussion on the benefits, challenges, and mindset of Agile.  Jeremy also shares details on the upcoming BADD Conference on September 18th presented by the local IIBA Chapter.

As a Sr Agile Coach, Jeremy has extensive experience working with organizations to transform or implement Agile.  Agile is a mindset and not a methodology. He shares the distinction between Agile, Scrum, Kanban and how they are utilized within Agile.  Jeremy also provides examples of the challenges organizations face with transforming or converting from traditional thinking to an Agile mindset.  However, he also shares the benefits. He is realistic in his assessment and does not live in the Utopian world an Agile coach would like to have you think exists.  A great insight Jeremy shared is that when using an Agile mindset you are not seeking to implement Best Practices as that would indicate you are done, rather Agile prefers thinking of continuous improvement thinking.  Jeremey does a great job in this fast-moving hour-long discussion making the concepts of Agile simple enough to understand and follow along, yet complex enough to get a true understanding of what Agile really is. Listen in to get all the insights and details!

E12 Eric Wright Founder Vets2PM and Vet Stone and John Baley President and Nicole Langston VP Marketing from PMI Phoenix

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Joe Pusz, PMO Joe has a great discussion with special guests Eric Wright, Founder Vets2PM, and John Baley, President and Nicole Langston, VP Marketing from the PMI Phoenix Chapter.  John and Nicole provide great insight into the activities and benefits of membership in the Phoenix PMI Chapter.  Eric gives us a clear understanding how service in the military can translate to a civilian Project Management career.  We also received several questions/comments from Twitter and encourage listeners to interact with guests tweeting questions using #pmojoe.

Eric kicks off our discussion providing background and his motivation for starting both Vets2PM and Vet Stone.  As a decorated two-Service, two-Era United States Military Veteran, Eric shares his in-depth understanding of how to translate military experience to project management for developing resumes, preparing for PMP certification and landing a PM job in the CIVDIV.   The Vets2PM team encourages participants to join local PMI chapters and actively participate.  Joe and Eric also share with us the Veterans Project Management Mentoring Program they kicked off in January serving over 50 Veterans across 29 states and 3 countries.  Listen to hear Eric respond to Twitter questions, “Has the military adopted standard project management processes such as those from PMI? Do they prefer to use their own brand of project management processes?”

John and Nicole share all the events and activities ongoing within the Phoenix PMI Chapter.  This is the 40th anniversary for the Chapter and the year has been highlighted by a great series of speakers and educational opportunities including James Snyder, Harold Kerzner, Dr James Brown, and most recently Steven Fullmer.  The Chapter conducts dinner meetings every other month and has numerous breakfast meetings and social events.  John and Nicole also share the work the Chapter is doing to assist members and Veterans with career services and mentoring.  Great feedback for John came in from Twitter, “I want to commend John and the Phoenix PMI chapter for expanding PMI meetings beyond that of just the Phoenix area.”

Candle Wishes is a Christian faith based 501(c)(3) non-profit that fulfills birthday wishes and provides essential needs for underprivileged children in Rutherford County, Tennessee and Phoenix, Arizona. Candle Wishes serves 700 needy children in Rutherford County each year. And, we are thrilled to be opening a new chapter of Candle Wishes to serve the children of Phoenix!

The work of Candle Wishes is performed solely by volunteers. Daily operations are overseen by Founder and Executive Director Jenny Williams in Tennessee and Kristy Morgan in Arizona. A Board of Directors, comprised of area business people and community volunteers, assists in setting policies for Candle Wishes, orchestrates fundraising opportunities, and provides hands-on assistance at monthly parties. Hundreds of volunteers from churches, schools, community groups, and businesses contribute their time and finances each year to sponsor children and host monthly parties.

Groups or individuals are solicited each month to sponsor the birthday children and purchase gifts and basic clothing needs for them. The sponsors are given a wish list, supplied by their child’s caregiver, to help them in purchasing the gifts. The gifts are given to the children at a monthly birthday party where they and their families are treated to dinner and birthday cake and enjoy birthday games and activities. Various organizations and groups host these monthly birthday parties. Participating children, ages 1 to 12, are identified through the Salvation Army’s approved list of Angel Tree families and through recommendations from school guidance counselors, social workers, and other philanthropic organizations.

In addition to fulfilling children’s birthday wishes, Candle Wishes strives to provide useful resources for struggling families. By connecting families with agencies that provide free health care, churches that nurture spiritual needs, and organizations that meet personal care needs, Candle Wishes works toward its mission of positively impacting the lives of children in need. Candle Wishes aims to emulate Christ’s love by making life better for children and their families in every way it can.
