Shockingly, it seems that drinks that have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee and as much alcohol as  several beers can cause some health problems. Then throw in some college aged partiers and soon enough someone gets hurt. Robert says that while individually caffeine and alcohol are okay taken together in high quantities causes some problems. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Robert Davis, author of The Healthy Skeptic. Robert explained why the soda tax might not be the way to decrease obesity.  He said that there is no proof that limiting soda lower obesity. Even if kids moved from dining less soda – if they started drinking more milk or fruit juice in schools they would be consuming even more calories than soda. It seems that raising revenue through taxing foods and beverages increases the scope of big government. First they targeted tobacco companies, now soda companies, next will be chip and candy companies then who knows what is next after that. Obesity is more likely caused by the prevalence of food everywhere you turn than it is from one food or beverage. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Robert Davis, the author of  The Healthy Skeptic from Everwell. Robert talked about a new study that illustrates the dangers of sitting too much. Robert is an award winning health journalist who specializes in debunking the myths behind the health claims that make it in print and on TV. Today Robert discussed the results of several studies that show that sitting too long has a detrimental effect on your overall health. The most recent study showed that people who sat for over 6 hours a day had a higher premature death rate than those who moved around more. This was true even if they exercised. So don’t sit for long. Find opportunities to get up throughout your day. Try those treadmill desks at work like TrekDesk. And make it a point to stand up and pace during phone calls. And when you are at home watching TV try and exercise during commercial breaks. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Healthy Skeptic Robert J Davis PhD. Robert is an award winning health journalist whose work has appeared on CNN, PBS, WebMD and the Wall Street Journal.  He debunked all those myths about sunscreen. Robert explained that there is a lack of FDA regulation of  sunscreen. So there are very often misleading claims on the the sunscreen packaging.  He shared tips on which sunscreens are safe and which are a rip off. He also explained that any sunscreen over 30 spf is pretty much overkill. According the Consumer Reports the best sunscreen is a brand from Target not one of those expensive designer brands. Instead of relying on sunscreen to protect you – go old school and wear a hat and cover up, stay in the shade and wear black. To learn more about bogus health claims please buy his book The Healthy Skeptic. Cutting Through The Hype About Your Health on Amazon and go to his website www.everwell.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Robert Davis, fitness journalist and author of The Healthy Skeptic. Today he shared some scientific truths about organic fruits, vegetables and meats. Organic fruits are those grown without pesticides and organic meats have not been injected with antibiotics and hormones. Today we ask the question are organic foods worth the extra money you pay for them at the grocery store? Robert is our resident health mythbuster. His health journalism background make him the perfect person to ask and answer these questions. His book The Healthy Skeptic: Cutting Through The Hype About Your Health is a must read if you get overwhelmed with information about heath, fitness, wellness and don’t know who is telling the truth. You can trust Robert. Regarding organic foods the questions you have to ask (and Robert answers in this interview) are: Are microscopic amounts of pesticides on fruits and vegetables bad for you in the first place? Is organic food healthier than non-organic food? And are organic foods safer for you? You’ll have to listen to find out. To get his book check out Amazon.com or go to his website www.everwell.com
