Jerry Ross/National Entrepreneur Center

The National Entrepreneur Center (NEC) is dedicated to the development, growth, and success of small businesses. Through a cooperative effort of a diverse group of organizations, they offer easy access to professional business assistance, quality educational programming, and practical industry expertise.

The roots of the NEC extend back to 2003 when Orange County Government, The University of Central Florida, and The Walt Disney Company collaborated to launch a unified approach to growing the small business economy. Since they began, their resident business support organizations have coached and trained Central Florida businesses in record numbers, while creating a nationally-recognized center for small business development.

In 2011, they relocated to the Orlando Fashion Square Mall and built an award-winning indoor miniature city, where entrepreneurs and small businesses receive support and services that enable them to develop the strong business community that has kept Orlando as one of the best places in American for starting and growing a small business for over a decade.

John Rivers and Scott Wall

A new podcast series, “Regions Business Radio Orlando”, covers financial topics such as banking and lending, mortgages, wealth management, and more, while also introducing you to many of the top executives with Regions Bank in the Orlando market.

Hosted by Scott Wall, Commercial Banking Leader with Regions, all episodes of “Regions Business Radio Orlando” are available for download on Apple iTunes, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or wherever you enjoy your favorite podcasts.

John Rivers/4R Restaurant Group and 4Roots Farm

Following a 20-year career in healthcare, John Rivers retired as President of a $1.5 billion company to pursue a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant. In 2009, John created his first concept, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, which quickly became one of the fastest growing restaurants in the Southeast. The business grew to 22 locations to include John’s other concepts, the Southern-inspired COOP, the Mexican themed Cantina at Disney Springs, and the farm-to-table 4Roots Café. 4 Rivers garnered national recognition being named “The South’s Best BBQ” by Southern Living, and the “#1 BBQ Restaurant Chain” by MSN.

Born out of John’s garage, the “barbeque ministry” remains at the heart of the company’s mission to lift up those in need and help build better communities. The culmination of the 4R Foundation’s work, the Orlando based 4Roots Farm will serve as a community campus to inspire revolutionary change in Florida’s food system through education on sustainable and regenerative farming, advancements in agriculture technology, and research in culinary medicine via the launch of the Culinary Health Institute.

Author of The Southern Cowboy Cookbook and graduate of Florida State University College of Business, where he served on the Board of Governors, John has been named one of the Restaurant Industry’s Power 20 Leaders by Restaurant Business & News, “Restaurateur of the Year” by Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, and Orlando Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful, 15 to Watch”. John had the honor of cooking at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, and was twice named a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

John serves on the FDACS Food Security Advisory Council and the Department of Agriculture Innovation Committee for the State of Florida, and is a member of the Florida Governor’s Council of 100. John lives in Winter Park with his wife and two children, and serves on the boards of numerous school, church, and local charitable organizations.

Brett Bond/Regions Bank

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is a general term that describes the consolidation of companies or assets through various types of financial transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, consolidations, tender offers, purchase of assets, and management acquisitions. This process combines two companies into one. The goal of combining two or more businesses is to try and achieve synergy – where the whole (new company) is greater than the sum of its parts (the former two separate entities).

Mergers occur when two companies join forces. Such transactions typically happen between two businesses that are about the same size and which recognize advantages the other offers in terms of increasing sales, efficiencies, and capabilities. The terms of the merger are often fairly friendly and mutually agreed to and the two companies become equal partners in the new venture. Acquisitions occur when one company buys another company and folds it into its operations. The end result of both processes is the same, but the relationship between the two companies differs based on whether a merger or acquisition occurred.
