Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Sharon Ash began her career working in the family business.  She tells us that her grandfather opened a restaurant nearly 70 years ago, and that only family had ever worked there!  She also noted that once you were tall enough to see over the counter, you were old enough to work!

Sharon followed her husband to Atlanta 18 years ago.  After missing the closeness of her family relationships for a number of years, Sharon found a surrogate family in the senior community when she took her first position at an assisted living community as an Activities Director.  Now, ten years later, she still feels like the senior community provides her with a surrogate family!  Through the Gwinnett Senior Provider Network, Sharon met April Watson, the Executive Director at Eastside Gardens.  As a result of that relationship, Sharon was able to get a position at Northlake Gardens, a sister community, as a Retirement Counselor.

Northlake Gardens in an assisted living community in Tucker with 66 suites, 14 of which are part of their memory care community.  Sharon tells us that the Northlake Gardens difference is their “whole home” approach and their personal interactions with their residents and families.  For more information about Northlake Gardens, call Sharon at (770) 934-0034, or stop in for a tour at 1300 Montreal Rd in Tucker!

Effective Transitions - Roger Kurth on Making Senior Moves Easier

Roger Kurth is not only an Atlanta native, but a rare Atlantan who never left!  After graduating from Georgia State University, earning a degree in Personnel Management, Roger embarked on a career in sales.  Holding a number of varied positions, Roger has sold everything from nails to luggage to machinery.  As the economy turned, Roger decided to take matters into his own hands, starting a business that allowed him to take his part time passion for helping people, and making it his vocation.

As Roger researched the market, he noticed there was a particular area in the senior services industry that was under-served:  He discovered a lot of anxiety and trepidation around the transition from a long-established home environment to a more suitable environment for an individual that may no longer be safe staying at home, nor able to maintain their own home.   Furthermore, he realized that most families had no idea how to go about preparing for a move like this – from the physical details like packing and moving, to the emotional details of parting with possessions.

In 2009, Roger founded Senior Transition Services.  Senior Transition Services was founded to provide honest, caring, compassionate, reliable relocation and estate services to seniors and their loved ones during difficult times.  While they, of course, handle the details of planning, packing, moving, unpacking and estate distribution, Roger also provides counseling to families in terms of how to emotionally and socially prepare for the move, how to select which items will move, and how to retain memories of those things that cannot be moved.  For more information, check out Roger’s website at www.seniortransitionservices.com, or call him directly at (678) 758-7929.

Return guest Sheri Maddox is a rare native Atlanta.  She attended Georgia State University, earning an undergraduate degree in business.  She started her career in sales.  Not too long after graduation, Sheri’s grandmother passed away.  Her grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001, and needed to move out of his house to a community where he could get the care and attention he needed.  As Sheri became involved in her grandfather’s care, she realized how much she felt called to work as an advocate for seniors.

Today, Sheri is the Director of Community Relations for Sunrise of Johns Creek.  She loves the resources that Sunrise brings to bear in providing a safe, secure, caring and compassionate home for seniors – particularly those with some cognitive impairment.  She also loves the fact that her grandfather lives in the building, two floors above her office!

Sheri also advocates for seniors through her volunteer work with the Alzheimer’s Association.  She got involved with this organization as a result of her grandfather’s diagnosis, and has found a place where she can really make a difference.   Sheri is co-chairing this year’s Atlanta Walk to End Alzheimer’s, being held this Saturday, September 29 starting at 8 am at Atlantic Station.  To get more information or register a team, visit http://www.alz.org. To find out more about Sunrise of Johns Creek, call 770-814-0505, visit their website at http://www.sunriseseniorliving.com, or send Sheri an email at johnscreek.dcr@sunriseseniorliving.com.

Born and raised in Georgia, Steve Norris earned a degree at Georgia Tech, and started a career in insurance more than 36 years ago.  Initially focusing on life and health insurance, Steve had a client 17 years ago that asked if he offered long term care insurance.  She further explained that the reason she wanted to purchase long term care insurance was so that her two girls would not have to go what she had been going through caring for her mother for the past 7 years.

Consequently, Steve founded Long Life Strategies.  His mission is to help clients design and implement financial solutions to three of life’s most complicated issues:

1)        Out-living your assets

2)        Dying with insufficient assets

3)        Through disability, exhausting your assets

For more information about managing the cost of long term care, email him at steve@longlifestrategies.com, visit his website at www.longlifestrategies.com, or call him directly at 770-833-3496.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Lisa Lowe moved southward to the DC area and on to North Carolina, where she did the majority of her growing up.  As she recalls, the food industry was not a planned career for her, but got bitten by the bug and has stayed with it for the last 25 years.

Climbing the ranks in restaurant and hotel management, Lisa moved on to contract food service management where she stayed for 19 years.  Knowing that her position as a Support Chef in healthcare would at some point end, she decided to start her own business, Cooking for Caregivers.  Healthcare is an amazing field to work in so her business was built around cooking for those who could no longer cook for themselves or the overwhelmed caregiver.  Her own experience as a caregiver to her in-laws made her realize what a daunting task it can be.

Cooking is Lisa’s passion, however it’s also about establishing relationships with those that she cooks for. She recognizes that it’s just food, but if she can bring a smile to someone’s face that means everything to her.  For more information about Cooking for Caregivers, call Lisa directly at 770-364-7448, or email her at CookingForCaregiversllc@yahoo.com.

Born and raised in a small town in Ohio, Jennifer Curry attended Ohio State University and received a degree in Womens’ Studies.  After graduation she started her career working in libraries.  It wasn’t until fifteen years later that she moved to Atlanta and began taking classes at Emory University.  There she earned her Masters in Public Health.  Along the way Jennifer also earned a Certificate in Aging from Boston University’s School of Social Work.

Though, in Jennifer’s words “it took a long time to get here”, she realizes that she was moved to serve seniors from an early age when a nursing home was built at the end of her small “dead-end” street, and she and her mother volunteered there.  Today, Jennifer is a Program Consultant for the Older Driver Safety Program in the Office of Injury Prevention, and part of the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Erin Elliott was born, raised and educated in Austin, Texas;  Andrea Williams, in Massachusetts.  Both were interested in pursuing careers in technical fields early on, but were pulled to a career serving people.  Erin earned degrees from both Texas State University and University of Texas at Austin.  In 2003, Erin accepted her first position with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Austin.  In 2008, Erin moved to Atlanta.  Today she is a Patient Resource Navigator for ACSat Northside Hospital.

Andrea is a more recent transplant having migrated here via Charleston, South Carolina about a year ago.  Andrea is a Patient Resource Navigator for ACS at Dekalb Medical Center.  The American Cancer Society, and its Patient Resource Navigator program is, in Andrea’s words, “all about saving lives and having more birthdays”!  She and Erin spend their days helping make their patients’ live just a little easier by helping locate resources for transportation, accommodations,

financial assistance and much more.  Not only do they coordinate the resource of the American Cancer Society, but they

bring together a vast array of resources that would be impossible for patients to assemble on their own.

For more information about the American Cancer Society Patient Resource Navigator program, visit their website at www.cancer.org.  To reach the program at Dekalb Medical  Center, call them directly at (404) 501-3279.  To reach the Northside program, call (404) 300-2163.

To anyone that speaks to Sandi Thurber, it is apparent that she loves her job, and is personally motivated by helping families in times of crisis and need. Educated in Sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi, Sandi began working with older adults on a part-time basis as the Activities Coordinator in a nursing home. After many years at both Meadowbrook and Delmar Gardens, she accepted her current position as a social worker at Gwinnett Extended Care Center (GECC) about six years ago.

Elizabeth Joseph came to the US from India twenty five years ago. When she came here, she intended to be a teacher. When she found it difficult to find a teaching job, she went back to school, and earned her RN degree. She moved to Atlanta 17 years ago, and accepted a position with the Gwinnett Medical system 14 years ago. Though she wears a multitude of hats, her primary role at GECC is to assist patients with their Medicare and insurance needs.

GECC is an 89 bed facility located adjacent to the main Gwinnett Medical Center campus in Lawrenceville. Sandi tells us this that being a part of the Gwinnett Medical system, and being co-located with the campus is a tremendous benefit for their patients, in that, there are a host of resources available that would not be easily accessible in another location. To find out more information about GECC, please call them directly at (678) 312-3000, or visit them on the web here.
