In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some facts about walking that will help inspire you to get moving. I use my FitBit everyday and on days when I don’t make plans to exercise i walk about 4000 steps. I have to make a concerted effort to go for a walk in order to hit the 10,000 steps everyone says you should walk each day. FYI every 2000 steps you walk equals a mile. In America we walk about half as much as we should. The Swiss walk about 9000 steps a day and in Japan they walk about 7000 steps a day. So make an effort to walk a little  bit more throughout each day. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened with Steve Bordley from Trek Desk. The Trek Desk is a cool table-like device that fits over any treadmill and it allows you to walk slowly (like at 1 mph) so you can burn calories (and lose weight) while you are working. You can set up your whole work station on top of the Trek Desk. You walk at such a slow pace that you don’t even realize you are exercising. And you can do everything you normally do at work – type on the computer, surf the internet,  talk on the phone, think, have meetings – all while standing and walking on your treadmill. You get all the benefits of exercise without even realizing you are working out. Trek Desk was recently named one of the best office luxury items from Forbes Magazine. Trek Desk is an easy way to get your 10,000 steps a day you need to lose weight and get in shape – you can literally do it in 3 hours without breaking a sweat. The fitness, weight loss and health benefits of adding this much walking to your day are amazing. To learn how you can start using that old treadmill in the basement again check out www.trekdesk.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on James Park from FitBit. FitBit is a small and stylish health and wellbeing monitoring tool. It’s like a pedometer on steroids – and I mean that in that best way possible.  It automatically collects data about your daily activities literally 24/7. You see it has a single 3-axis accelerometer similar to the Nintendo Wii. So whenever you move it records the movement pretty accurately. Plus you can press a button on the FitBit and check your progress whenever you want.  It then wirelessly syncs the data to your computer. And then you can share your data on Facebook or Twitter. I have been using it for about a month and it is amazing how sedentary I am some days – sometimes I take only 3-4000 steps in a day. My record day has been around 14,000 steps. It really makes you aware that you have to make an effort to go for a walk or exercise. Even when I walk this 5k loop in my neighborhood that only is about 6000 steps – so I still have to do more in order to hit 10,000 steps. Fitbit (with their premium service) is your 24 hour digital personal trainer, nutritionist and sleep consultant. Learn more about this great accountability tool and purchase yours at www.fitbit.com – be patient they might be backordered but they are worth the wait.
