Running on the track at your local middle school or high school is a great way to mix up your workout. Sure you have your favorite run course but to mix things up it’s fun to hit the track. You can run sprints or intervals. Dr Fitness had a great tip about using the lanes as a way to count how many laps you run. You can get inspired by the kids busting their butts as they train for track meets and cross country races. It will bring back memories of your youth and get you fired up. Or if you’re like the Fat Guy you’ll just get more depressed and go home and eat a box of donuts.

The Fat Guy Says Exercise is Like Cooking Not Baking. And He Knows A Thing or Two About Food.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why exercise is like cooking not baking. The Fat Guy has a new theory about working out. Please share your thoughts and comments because it is a little controversial. He just started lifting weights again so that is what started this theory. He says you should work out like you cook not like how you bake. For example when the Fat Guy has 30 minutes at the gym he doesn’t carry a notebook with the names of exercises and the weight and how many reps he has to do, etc. He just wanders the gym and goes machine to machine trying to hit the major body parts. He sets the machine on a low but challenging weight then does one set at a very slow pace (as slow as 10 seconds per rep) until he can’t do another rep. If he feel like to doing more arms than legs then Bam, just like Emeril he does more arms then legs. This is opposed to those people who log in every rep like it’s a science experiment. They are following their work out like Duff from Ace of Cakes makes his Girl Scout Cookie cake. The Fat Guy thinks if you are more unstructured while you exercise you will stay compliant longer and get good enough results to keep you going. Dr Fitness thinks you need to write things down to get the most results in the shortest time. What do you think? Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how counting calories can help you lose weight. Studies say that their is a better chance for you to lose weight if you keep track of the amount of food (calories) you consume. By writing down what and when you are eating you have a greater awareness of how much and why you eat.  Write things down as you eat and drink them rather than waiting until the end of the day and trying to remember – because invariably you will forget that handful of candy at your friends desk or that bite of hamburger your kid didn’t finish. And beware – restaurant calories are much higher for the same foods as home cooked meals because restaurants love to use a lot of butter in their dishes which adds lots of extra calories that you wouldn’t have at home.  Remember, if you bite it – you write it. (Same with drinking – but I don’t have a rhyme for that.) Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite weight loss tips. You have to pre plan things if you are serious about losing weight. That means on the weekend cut up a bunch of veggies that you will throughout the week. It also means knowing what you are having for dinner so you know how much to eat for breakfast and lunch. Write things down – nothing will stop you from overeating if you have no idea how much you’ve already eaten that day. If you can look at your food journal and see that you’ve eaten half your calories by lunch time that means you better put the brakes on for dinner. Losing weight is math. If you don’t keep track of the calories you’re consuming you’ll never see the numbers on the scale get smaller. Get exercise in as much as you can – and make it vigorous. Strolls to the mailbox might be good when you are just starting out but after awhile you have to crank up the intensity. Don’t starve yourself – when you are famished bad things happen (like blowing your diet on one Ben and Jerry fest)  – using healthy low cal snacks to take the edge off those crazy hunger pangs.
