In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain why short people burn more calories walking than tall people do. It seems that short people have short legs – duh. But short legs cause short people to take short strides when they walk and therefore they end up taking more steps than their taller friends and therefore they burn more calories in the same amount of time. Finally an advantage to being short. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some facts about walking that will help inspire you to get moving. I use my FitBit everyday and on days when I don’t make plans to exercise i walk about 4000 steps. I have to make a concerted effort to go for a walk in order to hit the 10,000 steps everyone says you should walk each day. FYI every 2000 steps you walk equals a mile. In America we walk about half as much as we should. The Swiss walk about 9000 steps a day and in Japan they walk about 7000 steps a day. So make an effort to walk a little  bit more throughout each day. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. The Trek Desk is a cool table-like device that fits over any treadmill and it allows you to walk slowly (like at 1 mph) so you can burn calories (and lose weight) while you are working. You can set up your whole work station on top of the Trek Desk. You walk at such a slow pace that you don’t even realize you are exercising. And you can do everything you normally do at work – type on the computer, surf the internet,  talk on the phone, think, have meetings – all while standing and walking on your treadmill. You get all the benefits of exercise without even realizing you are working out. Trek Desk was recently named one of the best office luxury items from Forbes Magazine. Trek Desk is an easy way to get your 10,000 steps a day you need to lose weight and get in shape – you can literally do it in 3 hours without breaking a sweat. The fitness, weight loss and health benefits of adding this much walking to your day are amazing. To learn how you can start using that old treadmill in the basement again check out www.trekdesk.com

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy opened the show with Katie Neiman with Dr Fitness’ favorite footwear Fit Flops. Katie explain that Fit Flops are the only footwear than comes with a gym built-in. These fashionable shoes activate your muscles as you walk – kind of like simulating walking while barefoot. These shoes blow away those old fashioned flip flops because they diffuse the pressure on your feet, while the old ones force your toes to hold the shoe on the foot which is uncomfortable after awhile.  These are not your mother’s sandals – they look great, they give you a hidden workout. They combine fashion with function and since the FitFlop makes sure your foot is always kept in the right position the 26 bones that make up your foot are all aligned properly. Dr Fitness insists that these will be the most comfortable pair of flip flops you will ever own. They have a kids line coming soon and have lots of different styles to choose from. You can try them on for yourself at Macy’s Nordstrom, Lady FootLocker and other great shoe stores or get them online at Zappos. Go to their website and see why Oprah put these shoes on her Top 10 list www.fitflop.com
