Mike Conner

Talking about Becoming a Mental Athlete

This week I sat down with life- and wellness-coach, Michaelene “Mike” Conner.  She works with individuals and companies seeking to improve their mental focus, ability to enact positive change, and overall level of physical health.  The art of well-coaching comes down to creating an environment for substantive and lasting life changes. These shifts in awareness happen through the engagement of collaboration, conversation, exploration and facilitation. It allows an individual to move from a current state of being towards a desired set of goals having to do with mental focus, health, fitness, energy and overall wellness. Conner’s coaching approach becomes the vehicle for guiding an individual to achieve a higher level of awareness and commitment to both physical and mental well-being.

Coach Conner will create a collaborative and co-creative environment in which the individual can explore their beliefs, behaviors, assumptions, visions and goals. She will assist the individual in connecting the dots between who they are and who they want to be, and to take the incremental behavioral steps that will enable them to succeed. Coach Conner is a credentialed health, fitness and mental health practitioner who coaches clients on evidence-based areas of wellness such as:

– Personal/Organizational change

– Physical activity

– Nutrition/Food and meal preparation

– Weight management/Sports nutrition

– Stress management

– Life satisfaction

Conner knows that everyone wants to be well, and everybody desires to be in control of his or her own health. She understands we want more energy to cope with today’s chaotic environment. Yet Conner recognizes that there is an enormous gap between wanting to be well and the everyday reality of living with the physical and mental consequences of our behaviors.

Obesity has gone global. Recent statistics have shown that approximately 1 Billion people are overweight on the planet and the two primary causes are increased consumption of a diet in processed foods with saturated fat and a decrease in exercise. Consider some of these statistics: 3 in 10 Americans are trying to lose weight at any one point in time; 35% of Americans are clinically obese; the top three disease killers in the US are related to obesity (heart disease, stroke and cancer) and American’s spend $40 billion on diet related products annually. Alarming.

Research has shown that diet alone will not keep weight lost off alone. Fitness factors in as well. Actually, 80% of dieters are trying to lose weight alone and studies show that 90-95% of dieters will gain the weight lost back within 1-5 years. Exercise is a key component of permanent weight loss, but not without consideration of diet as well. Exercise is also a key component and success factor for people who are successfully able to keep the weight loss off. The role of counseling has also been of great benefit for customizing a weight loss plan and the accountability factor in sticking to a new regime.

In addition to diet and exercise, new technologies and supplements are being introduced with some success into the weight loss arena such as: spa treatments, infrared saunas and the use of cold lasers to disrupt the fat cells, the products of which can then be excreted. Many are also using mobile technology for an accountability “buddy”, calculation and tracking of weight loss and fitness goals. No matter what individual plan entails, gradual, realistic lifestyle changes over time have been shown to produce long term results.

Losing weight is hard for everyone – so don’t get frustrated but the lack of progress you may experience from time to time. Here are a handful of weight loss tips that we stole from our first book that will help you blast through plateaus and get you moving to your goal weight.

  1. Write Down Your Big Why – writing down your goal is important but when you combine that with knowing the really big reason why you are trying to lose weight is the secret sauce that makes this work.
  2. Ask for Help – Some times you need help but sometimes you need a helper. You can’t do everything on your own ask for help from someone who does this everyday and helps lots of people. Your helper might be a personal trainer, a nutritionist even a radio host
  3. Baby Steps – Don’t make dramatic changes – Have a big goal but break that goal down into lots of little action steps. Then focus on making that small action step happen – once you’ve mastered that action step then move onto the next one. Repeat until and check your progress until you’ve achieved your goal.

We have lots more weight loss tips in our first book You Can’t Lose Weight Alone. The Partner Power Weight Loss Program. You can download that entire ebook for free (for a limited time) by clicking the link at the very top of our website. If you like it…please share it with your friends. If you don’t…please share it with your enemies.

When it comes to losing weight sometimes it is the little that mean the most. Here are four small changes that are pretty easy to make that could lead to big results when it comes to your weight loss.

  1. Eat a handful of seeds, nuts and berries each day as a snack. The Fat Guy starts his day with a handful of walnuts, almonds and dried berries for breakfast.
  2. Swap. For each meal swap some grains for more vegetables. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Just swap a little a bit at first.
  3. Add color. Add colorful vegetables to each meal. Red and orange peppers are great with everything from eggs to salads.
  4. Spice things up. Try new spices to add different flavor to your usual meals.

Ben Davis  has a remarkable weight loss success story. Ben’s video with his Coldplay soundtrack has been viewed over 1 million times. It is hard to watch and not think about signing up for a race. On Christmas day 2008 Ben was depressed and weighed 360 pounds. On that day he made a promise to his grandmother to lose weight and get his life together. In two years he has lost 120 pounds and has run marathons and finished an Ironman Triathlon.

Ben started to run – it was extremely difficult at first but he perservered with the help of his brother. Together they signed up for a 5k and started training. Ben started to lose a lot of weight pretty fast – sometimes 8-15 pounds a week at first. After the initial success of his first 5k Ben started to train for more and more challenging races. Eventually he snuck into the Boston Marathon and completed the race as a bandit. He is going to be featured in Runners World magazine in April.

Here are some of Ben’s Weight Loss tips

  1. Find an activity you love
  2. Join a group that meets a couple of times a week to get into a routine
  3. Change your diet – replace fast food with grilled lean meat and fruit and vegetables
  4. Blog to keep yourself accountable and supported during difficult times
  5. Use BodyGlide to prevent chafing

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how drinking water before meals can help you lose more weight. A recent study seemed to show that if you drink a couple of glasses before a meal you’ll eat less and lose weight. this may be because you’re full from drinking the water. It also might be because people are more dehydrated than they think they are and they might confuse the signal to eat with the signal to drink.  So drink early and drink often – you might drop a couple of pounds – FYI this study seems to work best for older folks.
