Charleston Crafted

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted (Organization Conversation, Episode 27)

Starting from scratch, Sean McBride taught himself woodworking to create furniture for himself and his wife. Now working together they have a weekly blog focused on projects to transform your home. Sean was at WORKBENCcon 2022 and sat down with Richard Grove in the Wall Control booth. Sean mentioned how it evolved for him, his philosophy to make projects easy and accessible for anyone, his experience at WORKBENCHcon and much more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted

Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted

Morgan & Sean McBride are crafting their home together in Charleston, South Carolina.

They blog at Charleston Crafted to share with you their experiences on transforming their home into a dream home. They are also empowering YOU to try DIY by showing you easy ways to make a huge impact in your home.

Sean and Morgan have a beautiful son and daughter named Luke and Rory, a beagle named CiCi Sabathia, and a fluffy grey cat named Bear Grylls.

From 2012 to 2016, they lived in a two-bedroom condo and started this blog to share the projects while decorating and living in that condo. You can see the whole condo tour here.

In July of 2016, they bought their first house. It was a bit of a fixer in that the bones were great, but they wanted to take down a few walls and, in general, bring the home into this decade and their style with DIY projects and design. This was where they turned the blog into a business featuring these projects and bringing them to you.

In 2020, they bought their second home and then had a baby 10 days later. The home is much more modern but very builder-boring as the previous owners did nothing. Morgan and Sean are spicing it up and showing you all the projects you can do!

About Richard Grove

Richard Grove, Host, Organization Conversation

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

About Wall Control

The Wall Control story began in 1968 in a small tool & die shop just outside Atlanta, Georgia. The first of three generations began their work in building a family-based US manufacturer with little more than hard work and the American Dream.

Over the past 50+ years, this family business has continued to grow and expand from what was once a small tool & die shop into an award-winning US manufacturer of products ranging from automobile components to satellite panels and now, the best wall-mounted tool storage system available today, Wall Control.

The Wall Control brand launched in 2003 and is a family-owned and operated business that not only produces a high-quality American Made product but sees the entire design, production, and distribution process happen under their own roof in Tucker, Georgia. Under that same roof, three generations of American Manufacturing are still hard at work creating the best tool storage products available today.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Woodshop Mike, and Curtis from Hangtime (Organization Conversation, Episode 25)

Woodshop Mike, along with Curtis from Hangtime, were Richard Grove’s guests live at WORKBENCHcon 2022. Mike says he got his start in high school when he wanted to make a guitar and studied with a luthier. Curtis described the sticker wall partnership between Wall Control and Hangtime, the contest, Woodshop Mike’s work, and more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Woodshop Mike

Woodshop Mike

Woodshop Mike is an information rich blog of all things woodworking with a vision to provide readers with an honest and transparent source for Shop Projects, Furniture, Home DIY, and Tool Reviews!  It’s our hope that readers may gain from our experiences and be inspired by our energetic approach that’s safety-driven, light-hearted, and succinct.

When he failed to make varsity soccer in high school, Mike instead turned his attention to woodworking and took on an apprenticeship with a local luthier for class credits.  He learned the craft of building guitars by hand, gaining a deep appreciation for reading grain patterns, attention to detail, and the use of hand tools.  He began building his own custom guitars, won a few awards along the way, and ignited a passion for building.

During his collegiate career, Mike continued his study of luthiery and branched off into different avenues of woodworking.  In the woodshop there, he had almost unlimited access to machining and woodworking equipment.  During these years, he began his exploration of woodturning along with building a few pieces of furniture.

Mike decided to start his own woodworking blog in 2013 as a way to give back to the woodworking community.  Since then, he’s grown from a part-time blogger into a full-time content creator and fine custom woodworker.  He thrives on designing and building new pieces, helping other woodworkers refine their craft, and being the main voice behind WoodshopMike.com.

If Mike’s not in the shop, you’ll find him either cranking out custom build plans for other woodworkers, editing videos for his latest builds, or cramming his face full of chips and salsa.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Craig, The Barefoot Forge (Organization Conversation, Episode 15)

Craig Cowan, owner of The Barefoot Forge, was at his third WORKBENCHcon when he sat down with Richard Grove to talk about not only what he enjoys about it, but what he’s learned over the years. He shared how he got into blacksmithing, how the business is growing, how he now has gotten into woodworking, his take on failure, and much more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Craig Cowan, Owner, The Barefoot Forge

Craig Cowan, Owner, The Barefoot Forge

Located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh PA, “The Barefoot Forge” is a collective blacksmithing group owned and headed by Craig Cowan, a young self-taught blacksmith native to Pittsburgh.

Craig started blacksmithing as a hobby over 10 years ago, inspired by boredom and completely self-taught, has grown his experience and passion into a unique skill set that allows for incredible, custom, heirloom pieces made traditionally. With a bit of luck and lots of experimentation, the methods used to hot forge beautiful Damascus rings were developed and now The Barefoot Forge is thrilled to make awesome rings for awesome people!

To them, your ring truly is special. The very idea of creating a lasting, custom piece that’s unique and somewhat random inspires them to do the very best work we’re capable of. Your wedding ring is something you’ve spent plenty of time considering, and it’s something that represents your relationship, shouldn’t it be something indestructible and unique?

Ethan Abramson Furniture

Started in Brooklyn, NY in 2008, Ethan Abramson produces its own line of furniture as well as custom commissions for residential and commercial projects.

Owner and head designer Ethan Abramson’s creative process allows for the materials to influence designs as much as the function does. This balance leaves pieces with a true sense of origin and purpose, something rarely seen in mass-produced furniture.

“The process of building a piece of furniture is just as important to me as how it looks in the end. All the solid wood I use had a story before it came to my shop. My goal is to build on that story, to see the characteristics in the wood and what it wants to become. I think of my work not based in machines and numbers, but as a completely creative process, as if I am painting.”        — Ethan Abramson

Today the shop is located in Long Island, NY, but the guiding principles are still the same. All furniture is handcrafted on-site, built using a blend of classic and modern woodworking techniques. Wood from reclaimed sources or sustainable foresting is used whenever possible. Pieces are protected with a hand-applied all-natural finish. Designs and shop practices are built around the idea of minimal waste, re-purposing, and environmentally conscious production methods.

Anika's DIY Life

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Anika of Anika’s DIY Life (Organization Conversation, Episode 8)

Anika had no experience when she picked up a power tool eight years ago to make her daughter some furniture. Anika, owner of Anika’s DIY Life sat down with Richard Grove at WORKBENCHcon 2022 to introduce herself, share how she got into the DIY community,  and more. Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Anika, Anika’s DIY Life

Anika, Anika’s DIY Life

Anika grew up in India. Growing up, she was always crafty – the handmade card, macrame, embroidery, and a little crafts kind of person. She had ZERO exposure to power tools or DIY – it wasn’t really a thing in India.

Anika came to the United States 18 years ago for grad school. She earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, got married, and got a job.

Eight years ago, on a quest for some cute furniture for her daughter, Anika stumbled onto the world of DIY blogs! She realized she could do this! She picked up a power drill for the very first time and built her first project.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Makers Challenge Central, with Raechal, Desert Woodworks and Adam, Lazy Guy DIY (Organization Conversation, Episode 7)

Raechal from Desert Woodworks and Adam of Lazy DIY Guy were in the booth with Richard Grove at WORKBENCHcon 2022, sharing lots of valuable information about Makers Challenge Central. Raechal talked about how she started it, how it’s evolved, their exciting new TV project, and much more. Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Makers Challenge Central

The 1st Builders Challenge started May 2016 by Raechal as an idea for a friendly challenge amongst friends to see how creative they can be with one plan and an unlimited amount of ways to modify the plan. Three seasons later Adam joined the team and the challenge has grown into multiple challenges that occur throughout the year with the main goal continuing to be community… with a bit of competition.

In addition to the challenge, you can find Adam on Instagram as @lazyguydiy and @makermediaco and Raechal as @desertwoodwrks.

Ronders Dot Com

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Ron with Ronders Dot Com (Organization Conversation, Episode 6)

With deep knowledge and experience in both woodworking and metalworking, Ron with Ronders Dot Com combined them both (and his name) into Ronders Dot Com. Ron creates pieces of art from trees, trees which, as he says, he wants to “save from the chipper.” He and Richard Grove discussed how he got into the work, how he leverages his skills in the business, where he sells his work, and much more. Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Ronders Dot Com

Ron with Ronders Dot Com makes wood and metal furniture using wood from local arborists. What started as a hobby to rebuild his physical stamina became an effort to reclaim and reuse the wood from the trees he was felling. He cuts down the trees and processes the wood into wall hanging bars and custom-made tables from a client’s tree.
His goal at Ronders Dot Com is to save trees from the chipper, encourage people to appreciate the trees on the land they live on, and show them the story that is living in the trees around them.
He has a lifelong history of woodworking and metalworking.
