Richard Grove, Wall Control

Richard Grove, Host, Organization Conversation

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

Outside of Richard’s work at Wall Control he enjoys helping other business owners, operators, and entrepreneurs along their own paths to success by offering personal business coaching and advising through his website ConsultantSmallBusiness.com. Richard has developed an expansive and unique skillset growing and scaling Wall Control through a multitude of challenges to the successful brand and company it is today. Richard is happy to share his knowledge and experience with others who are looking to do the same within their own businesses.

About Wall Control

The Wall Control story began in 1968 in a small tool & die shop just outside Atlanta, Georgia. The first of three generations began their work in building a family-based US manufacturer with little more than hard work and the American Dream.

Over the past 50+ years, this family business has continued to grow and expand from what was once a small tool & die shop into an award-winning US manufacturer of products ranging from automobile components to satellite panels and now, the best wall-mounted tool storage system available today, Wall Control.

The Wall Control brand launched in 2003 and is a family-owned and operated business that not only produces a high-quality American Made product but sees the entire design, production, and distribution process happen under their own roof in Tucker, Georgia. Under that same roof, three generations of American Manufacturing are still hard at work creating the best tool storage products available today.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted (Organization Conversation, Episode 27)

Starting from scratch, Sean McBride taught himself woodworking to create furniture for himself and his wife. Now working together they have a weekly blog focused on projects to transform your home. Sean was at WORKBENCcon 2022 and sat down with Richard Grove in the Wall Control booth. Sean mentioned how it evolved for him, his philosophy to make projects easy and accessible for anyone, his experience at WORKBENCHcon and much more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted

Sean McBride, Charleston Crafted

Morgan & Sean McBride are crafting their home together in Charleston, South Carolina.

They blog at Charleston Crafted to share with you their experiences on transforming their home into a dream home. They are also empowering YOU to try DIY by showing you easy ways to make a huge impact in your home.

Sean and Morgan have a beautiful son and daughter named Luke and Rory, a beagle named CiCi Sabathia, and a fluffy grey cat named Bear Grylls.

From 2012 to 2016, they lived in a two-bedroom condo and started this blog to share the projects while decorating and living in that condo. You can see the whole condo tour here.

In July of 2016, they bought their first house. It was a bit of a fixer in that the bones were great, but they wanted to take down a few walls and, in general, bring the home into this decade and their style with DIY projects and design. This was where they turned the blog into a business featuring these projects and bringing them to you.

In 2020, they bought their second home and then had a baby 10 days later. The home is much more modern but very builder-boring as the previous owners did nothing. Morgan and Sean are spicing it up and showing you all the projects you can do!

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Michael Spencer, Spencer Woodworks (Organization Conversation, Episode 26)

Michael Spencer, the owner of Spencer Woodworks, joined Stephanie of Uncommon Outpost and Wall Control for a conversation live from WORKBENCHcon 2022. Michael described transitioning from his military career into woodworking. He talked about what kinds of custom pieces he creates, the advantages of being able to work at home with his family, how they built his shop in one day, and much more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Michael Spencer, Owner, Spencer Woodworks

Michael Spencer, Owner, Spencer Woodworks

Spencer Woodworks is a custom woodworking business that creates original cabinetry, built-ins, one-of-a-kind furniture, and live-edge/slab furniture.

They enjoy working with clients from the beginning to the end of a project to design, build and finish custom pieces that suit their spaces and lives perfectly.

Michael uses 3D modeling to make sure that each piece is exactly what the client wants and needs in their specific space. He enjoys the personal stories associated with each project and the relationships built in the process.

After a twenty-year military career as a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot, Michael is accustomed to a high level of attention to detail in his work. He enjoys the conceptualizing and problem-solving that comes with design and the process and craftsmanship that goes into building quality furniture and cabinetry.

Woodworking began as a hobby for Michael during an especially stressful period in his Army career. He appreciated the way that woodworking captivated his brain in a challenging but peaceful way. He found satisfaction in this activity that simultaneously engaged his mind, hands, and heart.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Woodshop Mike, and Curtis from Hangtime (Organization Conversation, Episode 25)

Woodshop Mike, along with Curtis from Hangtime, were Richard Grove’s guests live at WORKBENCHcon 2022. Mike says he got his start in high school when he wanted to make a guitar and studied with a luthier. Curtis described the sticker wall partnership between Wall Control and Hangtime, the contest, Woodshop Mike’s work, and more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Woodshop Mike

Woodshop Mike

Woodshop Mike is an information rich blog of all things woodworking with a vision to provide readers with an honest and transparent source for Shop Projects, Furniture, Home DIY, and Tool Reviews!  It’s our hope that readers may gain from our experiences and be inspired by our energetic approach that’s safety-driven, light-hearted, and succinct.

When he failed to make varsity soccer in high school, Mike instead turned his attention to woodworking and took on an apprenticeship with a local luthier for class credits.  He learned the craft of building guitars by hand, gaining a deep appreciation for reading grain patterns, attention to detail, and the use of hand tools.  He began building his own custom guitars, won a few awards along the way, and ignited a passion for building.

During his collegiate career, Mike continued his study of luthiery and branched off into different avenues of woodworking.  In the woodshop there, he had almost unlimited access to machining and woodworking equipment.  During these years, he began his exploration of woodturning along with building a few pieces of furniture.

Mike decided to start his own woodworking blog in 2013 as a way to give back to the woodworking community.  Since then, he’s grown from a part-time blogger into a full-time content creator and fine custom woodworker.  He thrives on designing and building new pieces, helping other woodworkers refine their craft, and being the main voice behind WoodshopMike.com.

If Mike’s not in the shop, you’ll find him either cranking out custom build plans for other woodworkers, editing videos for his latest builds, or cramming his face full of chips and salsa.

LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022: Caleb Harris, YouCanMakeThisToo (Organization Conversation, Episode 20)

Caleb Harris, owner of YouCanMakeThisToo joined host Richard Grove and Stephanie from Uncommon Outpost on this live episode of Organization Conversation, broadcast from WORKBENCHcon 2022. Caleb is a content creator through YouCanMakeThisToo and builds custom furniture through The Custom Furniture Guy. He talked about how to embrace failure, his path to making, going to law school, getting organized, and much more.

Organization Conversation is produced by the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Caleb Harris, YouCanMakeThisToo

Caleb Harris, YouCanMakeThisToo

For Caleb Harris, making and teaching are two of his biggest passions, second only to being a husband and father.

YouCanMakeThisToo is about sharing what he has learned along the journey of making, whether that’s furniture, content, or business; and connecting with like-minded individuals who are obsessed with creating and sharing.

He was raised in a rural county in Tennessee with one of the poorest school districts in the country. His mother chose to homeschool him, and that allowed him to accelerate his schooling and do unconventional things, like spend four months working and living with various uncles were who professional contractors, and study during off time.

Caleb started college at Austin Peay State University shortly before he turned 17. In 2008, he graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice: Homeland Security and was commissioned in the Army as an Engineer Officer. After a year of training, he moved to Germany and immediately deployed to Iraq. Two years later he deployed to Afghanistan.

After redeploying from Afghanistan, Caleb moved back to the states and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. After six and a half years of service, he decided to resign his commission to spend more time with his family. Ideally, he wanted to start his own business and be able to set his own hours.

In 2014, he moved to Memphis and started law school. His second year of law school he discovered content creation as a career option, which opened up a new world of possibilities.

Content creation would allow him to create his own business, make things, teach others, and support my family. In his third semester of law school he launched his YouTube channel and started learning how to shoot and edit video.

Caleb graduated law school with honors and went full-time operating YouCanMakeThisToo, and his commission business, The Custom Furniture Guy.

Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins.
