On this past Sunday’s edition of Week In Review (aired on Biz1190AM in Atlanta), Host Dana Barrett aired the following BusinessRadioX clips:

  • From the Learning Insights Show: LeighAnn Langford from TrainingPros ad Trellis Usher from Greater Atlanta Chapter of ASTD talking about trends in the professional training and development.
  • From the Good Morning Atlanta show: Andrew Wells, Vice President with Daughtery Business Solutions on the salary negotiation and the cost involved with turnover.
  • From Atlanta Business Radio: Mark Azar from Georgia Society of CPAs explaining the different types of non-profit structures and their purposes.

Other topics covered on the show:

  • Where will the new Falcons stadium be located?  And is it okay for the churches currently on that land to hold out for more money?
  • Coke makes a deal to replace Pepsi in California Pizza Kitchen locations nationwide.
  • Atlanta is the 8th best city for “single, educated women”… but what does that really mean?

And on Dana’s personal soapbox:

  • Why do companies have to make it so hard to cancel a service?  Wouldn’t they be better off making the cancellation process easy and thereby perhaps keep you as a brand advocate?

Enjoy the podcast, and tune in live next week at Noon on Sunday on Biz1190AM!

Stacy Shuker

Should Atlanta establish itself as the driver of innovation and connection for the Southeast? In this edition of Global Leader Radio!™, Dr. Stacy Shuker joined Alvin C. Miles to discuss the burgeoning life sciences industry and the leadership needed to expand the focus of biotech  from local to regional.

Here are seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. When it’s broken, leaders fix it!

  2. Never let them see you get angry.

  3. Get comfortable with the fact that sometimes you won’t be right!

  4. Mentoring doesn’t always have to be formal to be effective.

  5. Listen more and talk less!

  6. Alone time is important.
  7. Achieving success doesn’t have to be “cut-throat.”

Listen in as Stacy explains how the industry has progressed and what’s needed to help realize its potential. Add her insights, tips and resources to your leadership toolkit. Leadership IS a conversation!

Dr. Stacy Williams Shuker/ President, Down South Innovation

Dr. Shuker has been a part of Atlanta’s innovation community since 2006. She started as a scientific advisor in an intellectual property law firm and as a volunteer in Georgia’s innovation non-profit organizations.

In 2008 she moved to the Georgia Department of Economic Development as the Director of the Center of Innovation for Life Sciences. It was there that she pioneered the use of social media in economic development after her marketing budget was cut by $85,000 during the Great Recession. It was from this social media base that she created a virtual community of life science innovators from across the Southeast that she still uses today. Downsouthinnovation.org provides regular updates on news and events from across the Southeast to its 1000 registered members.

As Director of Partnership Development for Georgia Bio, she initiated an industry outreach program, which resulted in several multi-billion dollar companies visiting Georgia’s research universities. Her partnership development firm, Down South Innovation, now connects clients with academic and corporate decision makers of the life science community in the Southeast.

She has chaired and served on several committees of Georgia Bio, Southeast BIO, Southeast Medical Device Association, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta. She is also a strong supporter of StartupLounge.com – an Atlanta based organization that pairs emerging companies with qualified investors. Dr. Shuker devotes her professional volunteer efforts to making the Southeastern region a thriving ecosystem for innovation and commercialization.

Dr. Shuker completed her undergraduate chemistry degree at the University of Georgia and went on to get her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon.

Divine TaylorFrom an early age, Divine Taylor has had a passion for caring for seniors.  Originally from Falls Church, Virginia, Divine attended Bowie State College in Maryland.  Though her early career was in sales in an unrelated industry, Divine worked as a volunteer on weekends with a friend’s non-profit organization helping to arrange companion care for seniors.  She also served as a caregiver for her grandmother, who suffered with Alzheimer’s until she passed.

These experiences led Divine to seek out the Autumn Leaves family of memory care communities.  As the Director of Sales and Marketing, she has been working diligently with the start-up team to open the doors of Autumn Leaves of Sugarloaf.  This community will be home for 46 memory-impaired residents once their licensure is finalized.  Divine tells us that it will be unique in its focus on creating a community for its residents where they will be able to stay throughout the progression of their disease.

Autumn Leaves of Sugarloaf is located at 1475 Satellite Boulevard in Suwanee.  Stay tuned for a grand opening in early Fall!  For more information, contact Divine via telephone at (678) 990-4580, or email her at dtaylor@autumnleavescom.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for more than 20 years.

Very special edition of Booth 61 on 7 24 2013 highlighting the upcoming Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum, and the great work of the Leadership Institute at the Cunningham Center, Columbus State University.

Dr. Ed Helton, Executive Director of the Leadership Institute at Columbus State University and Kim Rozycki, Director of Events & Operations at the Cunningham Center shared the incredible work being done through the Institute. I was unaware that Columbus State had created a very successful “Consulting” practice for companies and organizations of all sizes. Their success is being felt through the growth and increased productivity of their clients in Columbus and around the southeast with many in the greater Atlanta area. The world of business is changing every hour. Having the expertise of Dr. Helton and his team from Columbus State University will help you navigate the dangerous waters your business experiences from time to time.

Today we welcome Brandon Skolnick and Dave Winchell to From Boots 2 Biz Radio talking about our Veterans sponsored project for Habitat for Humanity.   Our group has formed the Veterans After-Action Coalition: Habitat for Humanity Project to build a  home for a deserving, low income veteran and family in the Atlanta suburbs.   This will become an annual program.

It’s our time to help our heroes in need, find out how you can give back to an Atlanta based Veteran as we discuss our Habitat project launching this fall.  Be a part of this important event by joining the effort to collect necessary funding or volunteer your labor on a weekend to assist in the building phase.

The Veterans After-Action Coalition (VAAC) was organized in 2013 by both Veterans and civilian members.  The group works with several individuals and organizations in the Atlanta area who are dedicated to providing resources and connections aimed at assisting Veteran men and women in the community.  VAAC hosts and participates in several group meetings and round table discussions with topics that are useful to Vets in the metro Atlanta area.

The latest VAAC project joins the Habitat for Humanity organization, where our members will be organizing an Atlanta based home build for a qualifying Veteran.  The fundraising portion of the project is set to launch now, continuing until the end of 2013 and will be comprised of several different fundraising events in the community.  Financial support is crucial for the project to take place, so the VAAC has set up easily accessible portals where supporters can donate.  As with all Habitat for Humanity builds, the homes can’t be built without the helping hands of the community and VAAC will be recruiting hard workers for the eventual construction.   With successful backing from sponsors, contributors and willing workers, the project is set to begin construction by spring of 2014.

To learn more about the Veterans After-Action Coalition and our Habitat for Humanity project, join us on Facebook at JoinVAAC, and on Twitter: @JoinVAAC.    You can also email Brandon Skolnick, the project leader, at Brandon@Sabotinvestments.com.

To donate, please find us on www.startsomegood.com under “Veterans After-Action Coalition”.  Thanks and we look forward to your support!
