On this Episode of Meeting Pros:

Omer Dar with SocialBox

Omer Dar was born in Jerusalem, Israel. Surrounded by an entrepreneurial atmosphere (after all it is a “Startup Nation”), he started doing small businesses since he was 12.

During his time in the army he commanded an infantry unit and learned the value of leading as opposed to commanding. After his release, he went for a long backpacking trip the world over and visited over 10 countries in 2 years. He learned new cultures and the differences in the ways those cultures interact with each other.

It was only natural for him to decide to study for his bachelor’s degree while in Europe. While studying he worked for a multinational pharmaceutical company but after 2 years, deciding he wanted to do it his own way, and established his first company, a bio-tech company. In the same year he also established a restaurant that later became a small chain.

Excelling in his MBA studies, he received a scholarship to study at Goizueta Business School (Emory). Not wasting any time, he created a wide network within the school and outside of it to prepare for the next big thing.

After establishing SocialBox with his two partners: Itai Peer and Avner Moratt, he quickly pushed forward to bring SocialBox to the attention of the big corporations. Currently working with companies such as Sun Trust, Kinder Care and Philips Arena.

Tim Lundy CSEP with Distinctive Design Events

TIM LUNDY CSEP, brings to the event table 34 years of combined training and experience for culinary planning and event design. Classically trained chef from New York and award winning event designer, from personal wedding flowers to high-impact environmental designs, making each wedding event specialized. Tim is a wealth of knowledge for the contemporary Bride & Groom, on menu design, event décor and wedding planning.

From coordinating the initial graphics piece to designing your wedding look and creating the balanced menu design complete with transportation, entertainment and custom event rentals; Tim’s event expertise will be you’re biggest advantage.

Mr. Lundy is an international professional speaker on the subjects of Culinary Design, Event & Wedding Planning, and Event Design & Décor for the Association of Bridal Consultants, The Special Event, American Rental Association, International Caterers Association, Event Solutions Expo and International Special Events Society. Tim has produced his first published book called, “Inside the Recipe Box of the Catering Chef”, which was launched February 2009 in Las Vegas at the Catersource Conference.

Allie Awards

In 1988, when Tim Lundy, CSEP, first envisioned the Allie Awards, those were the guiding principles he had in mind. He knew the city of Atlanta was fast becoming one of the stars of the event industry and wanted to create a platform for the local event industry to not only showcase their talents, but also drive them to produce events that could compete on national and even global levels.

Lara O’Connor Hodgson/NOWaccount

Lara co-founded Nourish Inc, shortly after becoming a mom. Nourish is a brand dedicated to bringing nutrition, safety and convenience to young children and their families. Nourish introduced its first patented products, Nourish Baby – a formula-ready bottled water for babies (just add formula, shake, serve and recycle) and Nourish Toddler – a spill-proof bottled water for toddlers, in airports, hotels, entertainment venues and retail outlets across the US. While growing Nourish, Lara experienced the challenge of managing cash flow in a growing business and having to fund the trade credit required to support the growth. Not finding a solution that worked, she partnered with John Hayes and launched NOWaccount Network Corporation, the first merchant service that works for B2B and enables small companies to get paid NOW while their business customers still enjoy trade credit that allows them to pay later. NOWaccount is poised to change the way small businesses manage cash flow and to turn a portion of the $1.2T of trade credit that small businesses hold into cash. NOWaccount is currently the subject of a Harvard Business School case study.

Lara is an internationally recognized speaker & facilitator, leading seminars on creativity, diversity & innovation. Internationally, Lara has worked in Koriyama, Japan with the U.S. Defense Department’s EAGLE Japan Program and served as the Ambassador to Lebanon for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Lara received an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a BS in Aerospace Engineering with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She was featured in USA Today as one of the top 20 students in the US and was the ODK National Leader of the Year. Lara was a scholarship member of the varsity Track & Field team at Georgia Tech.

Lara has served on many public and private Boards including: ACE Loans, Atlanta Heights Charter School, Flag Bank, Georgia Tech’s Alexander Tharpe Fund, Society of International Business Fellows and HERO for Children. Lara is a member of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2005 and the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2004. Lara teaches Real Estate Finance as an adjunct professor in Georgia Tech’s MBA Program. Lara was appointed by the Governor of Georgia to serve on the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) Board and the Transit Planning Board, and she was recently honored by the Georgia Tech Athletic Association with the Total Person Alumnus Award and by the  Georgia Tech Women in Engineering as the Alumnus of the Year. Can serial entrepreneurs impact the leadership of those in corporate and not-for-profit sectors? Can we learn a set of ideas, principles and values to better predict the long-term impact of our leadership? Karen Robinson-Cope helped answer these questions as she joined host Alvin C. Miles to share her experience, insights and advice in this edition of Global Leader Radio!™.

Listen, learn and apply these seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Customers don’t want to hear all the details, they want you to solve their problem.
  2. An entrepreneur’s job is to identify what needs to be done – then do it!
  3. Smarts & enthusiasm are sometimes more important than experience.
  4. Give your team the opportunity and the ability to fail.
  5. Tolerance for ambiguity & making timely decisions are essential.

  6. When operating internationally,  focus the culture/process bias of the country and company first.

  7. Having the external viewpoint of a board can make your company much more successful!

Listen in as Karen explains her leadership style through the lens of entrepreneurship. Add her ideas to your leadership toolkit to help increase YOUR influence. Leadership IS a conversation!
