Smart authors know that writing to a specific audience not only makes your book more interesting to your target reader, but makes it’s easier to promote as well. Today’s guests have each written their book with a niche reader in mind.

Linda Hughes career has uniquely equipped her to author her recently released book, CEO Secrets to IT Success. Linda’s past roles include divisional CIO for The Coca-Cola Company and Vice President of the Technology Practice and CIO for The North Highland Company (an international management and technology consulting firm). Most recently she held the position of CIO for AIG Agency Auto. Currently she is the President and CEO of The Great Ridge Company, which provides consulting services focused on improving the operational and growth capabilities of businesses.

Also on today’s show is Sarah Hunt Engsberg. A professional farrier since 1991, Sarah has been serving the needs of horses and equestrians in the sports of Three-day Eventing, Combined Training, Dressage, and Endurance for nearly two decades. Sarah specializes in finding and maintaining proper balanced movement for each horse’s individual conformation. Her book, From Hoof to Helmet: Understanding Critical Balance for Peak Performance, is scheduled to launch in Fall 2012.

Karen Hilton and Derreck Kayongo joined host Alvin C. Miles for this impactful interview. Download and listen to the many tips and leadership advice from these two progressive leaders in both the corporate and not-for-profit organizations.

Karen R. Hilton/ Vice President, Human Resources for TRX, Inc.

Karen is responsible for providing global strategic human resources leadership in the U.S., the U.K., Germany and India for TRX, Inc., a world leader in travel technology. TRX helps top travel agencies, corporations, government agencies and other institutions maximize savings and efficiency through travel technology applications. Karen’s leadership philosophy is that “People Matter”.  She oversees the development and implementation of global human resources policies, practices and services, working alongside a talented group of HR professionals.

Prior to joining TRX, Karen led the human resources function for AutoVIN, Inc. a technology company in the vehicle inspection and auction industries, with operations in the U.S. and Canada. Karen’s employment history includes progressive HR roles with Manheim, Cox Communications, General Electric Supply and The Boston Consulting Group.  She earned her BS in Sociology, with a concentration in Cultural Diversity from Kennesaw State University and she’s Six Sigma Green Belt certified.  Karen considers herself a business leader first, with a passion and commitment to connecting people to and through the organization.

When not leading strategic human resources initiatives, Karen enjoys spending time with her family, music and scrapbooking.

Derreck Kayongo/The Global Soap Project

is a social entrepreneur and the founder of The Global Soap Project. An executive and development expert, Derreck Kayongo has more than 15 years experience developing strategic social campaigns within organizations for cause-related advocacy, public policy, issue management, and community organizing. His work has made a profound contribution in raising awareness aimed at realizing permanent solutions to global poverty.

Kayongo’s journey from child refugee to fearless visionary is filled with moments of inspiration (along with the benefits of good, old-fashioned sweat equity) that make him one of the most popular – and authentic – speakers on the circuit today. From Africa to Atlanta with nothing but a dream and tenacity, Kayongo beat the odds, earned an education, and has served in leadership roles in some of the world’s most respected non-governmental agencies (NGOs) since 1994. Today, he shares his vivacious spirit and invaluable experience in the areas entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, global health, social justice and professional engagement with audiences in both the corporate and not-for-profit worlds.

Derreck Kayongo’s ability to motivate others to understand the role their work and skills can play in problem solving is one of the many reasons he was chosen as a finalist for the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year Award. Add to that the mantra of being a voice for the voiceless through his noble work of giving back, including dedicating his life to improving the lives of marginalized and vulnerable people across the globe: he has worked with the American Friends Service Committee as Program Director for the Southeast Peace Education program; joined Amnesty International as the Director of the Southeast Region; and currently serves as Senior Advocacy Coordinator for the Southeast region with CARE International.

In 2009, Kayongo and his wife Sarah embarked on a new journey pursuing their life-long passion of starting an NGO of their own. The Global Soap Project focuses on repurposing partially-used soap from hotels into new soap for needy populations, particularly in Africa. To date, The Global Soap Project has been able to donate 9,000 bars of soap to Swaziland, 5,000 bars to Kenya, 10,000 to Ghana, 1000 to Uganda and another 3,000 thousand to Haiti.

Accolades:

Derreck Kayongo is a proud naturalized U.S. citizen. He has been recognized as a 2011 CNN HEROES finalist and a COX Enterprise nominee; honored by Congressman John Lewis with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition; is currently writing his autobiography; has been featured in more than 20 news stories in the U.S., featured on Fox News as part of the Real American story series; featured on CNN with Fredricka Whitfield.

Dr. Tim, host of Write Here, Write Now, often shares a story about his dad who owned a very successful small business.  His dad was also quite active in local and regional church matters in the United Church of Christ.  As such, he dealt with ministers a lot.  When Dr. Tim indicated his interest in studying for ministry, his father replied, “Then I want you to get as good a business education as you can. Ministers need to have a business sense about them and very few do.” Dr. Tim did that including taking business courses at Harvard Business School as part of his DMin. studies.

When Dave Doty felt called to seminary,  it was to study economics, the marketplace in Christian perspective, and Christians in marketplace vocations. After eight years’ research and writing, Dave’s first book, Eden’s Bridge: The Marketplace in Creation and Mission, was published in 2011.

Timothy Read is licensed to practice law in Georgia, Virginia, Texas and California.  He is also an ordained ministry within the Presbyterian Church, USA.  Tim’s current writing interest is in areas of constructing (and often deconstructing) missional organizations to balance the competing needs of accountability, transparency and stewardship with priorities of freedom, creativity and external focus.

Guests Dave Doty and Attorney Tim Read along with Dr. Tim  will discuss the challenge of bringing solid economic practices  combined with accountability and well grounded theology to the market place.  Faith, accountability and solid business practices should be solidly intertwined if folks claim the mantle of business leader and person of faith.  Learn from these guest authors how they chose their topic of interest for writing and how they engage in research to write effectively.

Adam Ross/Socialvest

Adam Ross, believing that people inherently want to do good, has made it his mission to turn the traditional business model into a sustainable social enterprise. Two years ago, Adam started his latest adventure as a social entrepreneur and formed Socialvest, a company that capitalizes on three extraordinarily powerful forces: shopping, consumer consciousness and social media. The model allows consumers to buy the things they want and need, while simultaneously giving them a chance to support their favorite causes and inspiring their friends to join them.

“Everyone has something they care about, and fundamentally wants to give back,” Adam says. “My goal is to make it easy for people to invest in social good by providing tools to empower, support, and mobilize.”

Adam’s light bulb moment to start Socialvest came to him during a brunch with some of the world’s largest brands. When the conversation steered towards how the companies gave back, Adam recognized a major disparity in how brands were giving back and why consumers were engaging with brands because of their philanthropic efforts.

So Adam set out to revolutionize the way brands and consumers interact by enabling consumers to shop at hundreds of leading retailers, including Target, Macy’s, Home Depot, Best Buy, Nordstrom and iTunes. Registered users on the Socialvest website can earn money for their favorite charities by simply shopping through the Socialvest site or at participating local stores. And to make online shopping even easier, Socialvest offers a browser toolbar to make sure earning happens automatically.

Socialvest users earn between one and 35 percent of their total purchase from the company’s retail partners. The money earned is automatically deposited into Socialvest users’ online Giving Accounts. Each time a purchase happens, the event and the retailer who made the contribution – can be broadcast to users’ friends via Facebook, Twitter and other social channels. Donations made by Socialvest users to their favorite nonprofits can also be publicized via social media, thus raising awareness for important causes and motivating users’ friends to get involved. Overall, Socialvest gives members the freedom to donate to over 1.5 million nonprofits in the United States.

In addition to running Socialvest, Adam sits on the board for First Step, a non-profit social purpose-staffing agency. He’s also a loving husband to his beautiful wife, Gwen Ross, and new father to an adorable baby girl, Charlotte.
