We interviewed Rob Hurlbut, CEO of Attune Foods, a venture backed functional food company.  Attune Foods –introduced a line of  chocolate probiotics in 2006 then recently purchased  healthy breakfast cereals Uncle Sam and Erewhon to expand their digestive health portfolio. Their products are available in most grocery stores.

Your gut plays an important in your total overall health – he said 70% of your immune system relies on your gut. Rob shared the importance of probiotics for good digestive health and suggested three things you should to in order to maintain good digestive health.

  1. Remove the foods your are allergic to from your diet
  2. Add more fiber into your meals
  3. Make sure you maintain good bacteria (probiotics) in your gut

Since all of the nutrients you consume pass through your gut before they are used by your body it makes sense that good health starts in your gut.

First Reeese’s mixes together chocolate and peanut butter. Now Dr Fitness has a recipe that mixes together shrimp and watermelon. This meal is perfect for for summer. Saute up some shrimp in olive oil and then throw in some bok choy, thyme and grape tomatoes. When you get ready to serve this dish squeeze some lime juice over the shrimp and veggies then place some sliced watermelon planks over the whole thing then serve over brown rice.

Teriyaki sauce is a great marinade for salmon. Brush some teriyaki sauce generously over the salmon then let it sit in the sauce for at least 15 minutes then grill as usual. Keep the skin on the salmon when you grill to keep the fish more tender and to prevent it from drying out. A great side with this salmon is cucumber salad. Slice up some cucumbers and marinate them with a nice balasamic vinegar dressing.
