BRX Pro Tip: Social Proof

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with BRX Pro Tip. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, today’s topic, let’s talk about social proof. Why we need it? How we get it? Anything that we can offer our colleagues with regard to social proof.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:17] Well, when people make a buying decision, some people like to buy and like to be the first to buy things. And those are the early adopters. And they don’t need as much social proof. They kind of get it. They want to buy it. Another group of people, a much larger group of people need to know that whatever the thing is, has helped somebody else. That it’s really going to work because they don’t want to look foolish and they don’t want to make a mistake. So, for those people, having social proof is really important in order to sell them something. A lot of them won’t even consider buying it unless there is some sort of social proof. And that’s where these testimonials, online reviews, case studies come in. The more of that stuff you have, the more likely you are going to be able to sell that group of people.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:04] So, now, if you’re a studio partner and you’re part of the Business RadioX Network, this is one of the really important benefits of being in the family here. Because anything we capture in a given studio, any social proof that we have anywhere in the network, we can use it in our market and share that same social proof. We can say, “Hey, Mr. Wealth Manager, we have this thing that worked really well in this studio. I’m sure it’s going to work for you. You can even call the guy that that did the show.”

Lee Kantor: [00:01:38] So, that kind of social proof allows us to leverage the network to show a prospect in our market how someone else in a similar industry benefited elsewhere in the network with the same kind of tool. So, that’s why it’s important for us, as studio partners, to keep capturing as much of these testimonials, reviews, and case studies as possible. And the beauty of our business, everything we do is published. So, all of our work is out there for anybody to see. Anybody can contact any sponsor and studio partner and talk to them and see how it’s working.

Wade Hamstra, Owner & Vice President
Hamstra Heating & Cooling, Inc.
 4389 N. Highway Drive
Tucson, AZ 85705
520.629-9833
whamstra@hamstraac.com

A native of Tucson, Wade is a confessed sports nut and “business geek” who is carrying on the legacy of a family business over 37 years old.  A proud graduate of the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Business, Wade obtained both a Bachelors’s and Masters’s degrees from the school before returning to his roots in the HVAC industry.  Wade’s childhood was mostly spent around the company’s shop floor, working with his father Jeff, uncle David and grandfather Glenn – who founded the company back in 1983.

It was in the wake of the Great Recession that Wade put his business education to use, spearheading a major shift in the company’s approach towards residential customers and avoiding the darkest days of the construction industry’s collapse.  It was in that transition to a wider net of customers that demanded a caring, personal touch – not just a low bid price – that the family-run business realized its greatest cultural asset: intentional, unwavering care for its people and its customers.  With this value enshrined, both Wade and the HHC team have been able to serve Tucson’s most vulnerable through the Hamstra Helping Hands charities and in service to the El Rio Foundation.  Wade, his wife Dolora, and their children look forward to continuing the Hamstra legacy in Tucson for generations to come.

About the Business:

Hamstra Heating & Cooling was founded on November 1, 1983, by Glenn Hamstra and his two sons, Jeff and David. Glenn had 34 years of experience in the heating & cooling industry, Jeff 11 years and David 9. Tired of being unable to provide the highest levels of customer service, Glenn felt it was the right time to set a new standard for the heating & cooling industry. Jeff and David were working as field installers for separate companies at the time and jumped at the chance to join their dad in the new business venture. They too had seen the lack of customer service provided in Southern Arizona and saw this as a prime opportunity.

Glenn managed to get a bank loan, which they used to buy two trucks, two pieces of shop equipment, pay rent on a small building and buy materials for their first job. Initial business came from builders that Glenn had formed relationships with over the years. These builders were thrilled that Glenn had finally gone out on his own because they knew his ethics, integrity and the quality work he would produce. Eleven months passed before Hamstra was able to hire its first employee, Robert Orr, who still is a big part of today’s Hamstra team.

In 2006, a third-generation arrived into the family team with Wade Hamstra, Jeff’s son, assuming the role of General Business Manager and co-owner. Wade has modernized the operation and has brought an even greater focus to customer service and technical excellence.

The entire Hamstra family is proud of the reputation it has grown and maintained, being able to employ over 60 Tucsonans. As part of the Tucson community, Hamstra Heating and Cooling actively volunteer and provides financial donations through a committee we call Hamstra Helping Hands.

We do hope that all of the above gives you confidence in our abilities and that you will allow us the opportunity to provide service or replacement for your home or business

Black-owned Phoenix Mortgage Specialist, Inc. is thriving in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Washington Post, the economic downturn has permanently shut down more than 100,000 small businesses.

Lu-Mack-Phoenix-Mortgage-SpecialistsLucius Mack owns the Atlanta-area business that offers premier mortgage broker services, which makes him a member of a rare professional group. Of the nearly one million privately owned businesses within the finance industry, less than 5% are owned by African-Americans, according to a 2012 Census Report.
Mack attributes his success to two factors – family and failure.

“I’m a Black man from Savannah, Georgia. My parents were not college-educated but were hardworking and that’s what they instilled in me,” says Mack. It hasn’t been an easy road for Mack. It was the devastating market crash of 2007 that hobbled – then battle-hardened – his firm for the pandemic’s financial challenges. Mack’s company, previously known as Diverse Financial Services, lost everything in the crash 13 years ago.

“It was heartbreaking,” reflects Mack. “We invested our entire livelihood into our business, we knew everything there was to know about the mortgage industry, and then it was destroyed.” That same tenacity to survive in 2007 is the same strength Mack now relies on. “It would have been easy for us to walk away and feel sorry for ourselves but we re-built. We re-named our company, Phoenix Mortgage Specialists, Inc. as a nod to the mythological bird, ‘The Phoenix,’ rising again from the ashes of the economic crisis.”

Phoenix specializes in helping the under-served and often rejected buyers. “I was unable to close with several other lenders, but Phoenix got it done,” says new homeowner Shanae Bowles. From his company’s inception, Mack has helped thousands of families, with credit scores as low as 620, secure the American Dream. “While major lenders are tightening their strings during Covid-19, we deal with smaller lenders who are willing to be more flexible,” he says.

For the second year in a row, Expertise.com has listed Phoenix Mortgage Specialists, Inc. as one of the Top 19 Mortgage Brokerage firms, out of 149, in the Atlanta area. Phoenix outpaced its competitors in all of the five major scoring categories.

Phoenix Mortgage Specialists is available to encourage small businesses to stay the course. “I am deeply proud to be among the 5% of Black owners in this industry,” says Mack, a husband, and father of four. “If little kids, particularly those who look like me, are inspired to work in this financial industry because of my work, then I am doing my part in society.”

BRX Pro Tip: You Are Not Your Customer

Stone Payton: [00:00:04] Welcome back to BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you.  Lee, I’ve heard you say it several times as you’re trying to help new studio partners get their business off the ground as you are consulting to some of our client host. But you’re fond of telling them, “Look, you are not your customer.”

Lee Kantor: [00:00:22] Yeah. This is where empathy plays a big role in selling. You have to understand, when a customer comes to you, they may know what they know. But you kind of have a more depth of knowledge in a lot of different areas that they don’t know any more or not yet. So, when you have this historical knowledge and the scar tissue that your customer doesn’t have yet, sometimes you kind of accelerate past some of the pain points. And, maybe, ignore some of the things that are happening that the customer is saying. Because it’s been so long since you’ve had that pain. So you it’s harder for you to relate.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:59] So, it’s important to kind of really empathize with them. Truly get into the customer’s shoes and head where they’re at today. And that way you’ll be more effective in selling them something. So, you’ve got to meet them where they’re at. Understand their challenges and desires they have today. And show kind of the path that you can help them achieve the goals that they want to achieve. You don’t have to kind of fast forward to the end. You’ve got to kind of address each situation where it’s at. Even though you know how it’s going to end. So, you’ve got to kind of work your way through the process and work your way up the ladder.
