BRX Pro Tip: Dream List Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] Welcome back to Business RadioX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and  Stone Payton here with you this afternoon. Lee, let’s talk about the dream list.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:09] All right. This is an exercise that I think is critically important when you’re selling somebody something or broaching the idea of them having a radio show. A lot of people’s fear is that no one will be on a show because, who are they? They’re not a professional broadcaster. Their show doesn’t have any listeners. All these fears come up. So, they think it’s going to be very, very difficult to get guests. So, an easy way to allay the fear is to just start brainstorming. What—who are these guests? Who are they? Start naming them. Name the companies, name the people. Just start brainstorming the associations that serve this group. Start getting a list together. And if you can get a list together of 50 to 100 names of people, you’re going to be getting over one of the big hurdles of getting this person as a client because, now, there’s a big pile of guests.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:59] Now, the next challenge will be, will any of them come on the show? That’s an easy challenge, now, to manage because, now, you can just start inviting them. Now, you have a starting point. And then, when they start seeing the ratio of people that are saying yes to coming on the show, now, you’re that much closer to a sale because they’re going to see, “Hey, this is easy.” Most people that I ask, “Do you want to be a guest on my radio show?” say yes. When I was saying, “Hey, do you want to have a coffee with me, so I can tell you what a great CPA I am,” nobody was saying yes. So, doing this puts you on the road to success.

Daniel Krook is the Chief Technology Officer of IBM Code and Response and Call for Code, a multi-year competition that inspires developers to create sustainable software solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. He ensures that those ideas are delivered where they can make the greatest impact as CTO of the IBM Code and Response Initiative.

Most recently seen with Hurricane Dorian, the impact of devastating wildfires, landslides, hurricanes and other natural disasters continues to grow every year – but with the help of the global developer community and open source technologies, we have the potential to significantly improve preparedness for natural disasters and accelerate relief when they hit this is where the “Call for Code” comes in right Daniel?

Enter Call for Code, a $30 million, five-year global challenge that unites developers to create applications powered by open-source technology that can tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. Call for Code was launched by the David Clarke Cause alongside founding partner IBM in 2018. Now in its second year, the Call for Code program has engaged 24 million developers around the world).

This year, more than 180,000 independent and enterprise developers, data scientists, activists, and students from 165 nations participated to create technologies that can help local communities in need. These teams used data and open source-powered technology – including cloud, artificial intelligence, and blockchain – to create more than 5,000  applications.

The five finalists for this years’ Call for Code, were chosen from an elite group of top technology solutions around the world.

  1. AsTeR (Europe) – During natural disasters, emergency call centers are overwhelmed and lack the human resources to deal with the sudden uptick in calls. Project AsTeR helps prioritize emergency call center calls during natural disasters, by their level of emergency, but transcribing calls and analyzing them to extract key information, such as the number of victims, type of emergency and location. AsTeR then provides first responders with a map identifying areas with high levels of emergency based on the number of people involved and the type of injuries.
  2. Healios (North America) – Healios provides victims of natural disasters with high-quality mental healthcare by streamlining the process for caseworkers to connect with survivors who may be struggling after a traumatic experience. By leveraging the IBM Watson platform, Helios can provide high-quality mental healthcare at scale by way of a mobile application, compatible with both iOS and Android.
  3. Prometeo (Europe) – Prometeo is a cognitive platform that collects data from IoT sensors worn by firefighters and sends it to Watson Studio, a Watson Machine Learning service, with professionals to monitor their health in real time, detect trends, and recommend intervention.
  4. Rove (North America) – Project Rove is an emergency response solution that connects responders to victims deemed to be most in need. Natural language processing and crowdsourced SMS messaging first attempts to organize victim health, food, and hygiene needs by priority and location. Rove then groups and highlights at-risk victims on an interactive web dashboard, and uses real-time satellite imagery analysis to enable rescue workers to quickly reach victims by generating routes avoiding damaged buildings and roads.
  5.  Sparrow Platform (Asia Pacific) – Sparrow Platform is an open-source ecosystem that can ensure medical and psychological preparedness, well-being, and recovery. By leveraging AI, IoT, mesh networks, and cloud, Sparrow enables ubiquitous access to medical help, medical records, information and alerts during and after disasters.

 The global initiative culminates on Saturday, October 12th when the 2019 Call for Code winner was announced during an awards ceremony at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room in New York City. The winning team will receive a cash prize of USD $200,000 and support from IBM, The Linux Foundation, and other partners interested in turning the winning idea into a real-world, open-sourced deployment to benefit communities in need. Second, third, fourth and fifth-place winners also receive a cash price.

 The winning solution will be further developed and deployed via IBM Code and Response, an initiative in collaboration with of some of the world’s leading disaster, technology, and human rights organizations including: United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative University, The Linux Foundation, AT&T, FirstNet Authority, Consumer Technology Association Foundation, and Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies. Code and Response is currently piloting Project Owl, the winning solution from Call for Code 2018, in regions recently affected by natural disasters, including Puerto Rico and Houston, Texas.

BRX Pro Tip: Facebook Live Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with Business RadioX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, let’s talk about how we’ve been using Facebook Live here in the studio.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:10] Yeah. Facebook Live is a fun tool, and I want to evolve to start using LinkedIn Live for the same purposes. But what we do is before the show, we like to do the mi check on the air. This gives another point of value for each of the guests. They come on, and they—we ask them—instead of just saying their name and their business, we ask them to do like kind of a quick elevator pitch, so they get to talk about their business in a short manner while we’re doing the mic check anyway. And we’re broadcasting it over Facebook Live. Now, Stone, you’re the one who’s pressing all the buttons on this. So, talk about how, kind of, you’re making it work.

Stone Payton: [00:00:45] Oh, yeah. It’s easy to execute, obviously, or it wouldn’t be me doing it. It works here in the studio. It works out in the world. In terms of executing, I just go to the Facebook page, and, you know, the one that we operate. And then, each of you, if you’re going to do this, you want to go to a Facebook page that you have control over. Very simple. You click the Facebook Live button. You type in a little bit of a note. And I’ve got a little USB camera on a little boom that I can swing around and show it to everyone.

Stone Payton: [00:01:12] The way I execute it is when we’re getting close to getting settled down a little bit, I’ll tell everybody, “Look, we like to do the soundcheck on Facebook Live unless there’s anybody that doesn’t want us to do that.” I have yet for anyone to say no. And I say, “Well, the reason I mentioned it is because there are some people who will tap into that. It is great for getting some energy around what we’re doing.” You know, don’t say anything during soundcheck that you don’t want people to hear because you’ve already got an audience.”

Stone Payton: [00:01:38] And so, I’ll do that. We’ll do the soundcheck. As Lee mentioned, having them kind of do their little elevator pitch gets them—it’s great for the soundcheck itself. It gives them a chance to share what they want to share out there with the audience. Now, we’ve chosen to confine it to the soundcheck. So, after we’ve done the soundcheck, but before we go on air live, I will let them know, and I’ll let the Facebook audience know, “Hey, we’re about to check out here. Go catch us live at bumpety-bump.” And, usually, that’s at atlantabusinessradio.com, or ‘You can catch us on demand at atlantabusinessradio.com,” as well.

Stone Payton: [00:02:15] Then, I’ll turn that Facebook thing off. And then, we’ll do the balance of what we do. You know, I’ll say, “Okay, we’re about to go live.” And it gets everybody sort of in the groove. They seem to love it. And I know we get engagement on Facebook. And I know a lot of people probably just look at it, you know, sound down, but it just—it lets you know that we’re doing stuff, and we do so much stuff across the network that it seems to be just marvelous for getting additional energy around these shows. So, highly encourage you to do that.

Email: darylmallett@aol.com

Daryl Mallett is the Chairman of the Arizona Film Expo, an award-winning actor, producer, writer and a partner at Caribou Moving Pictures LLC. Daryl is a Christian and father of three beautiful children. During this podcast, Daryl and Mark talked about the Independent Film Industry here in Tucson and the financial ramifications of that but before we do, your own career as an actor in both film and Stage has been quite diverse. Carmady’s People: The Case of the Reluctant Major (1986), “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987- 94), Then some Star Trek’s (Star Trek VI): The Undiscovered Country (1991), “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993-99).

Daryl was the Producer on short film Retro–causality (2019), Assistant to the Producers on The Message (2004) and Associate Producer on Illusion (2005) and currently serving as writer and producer on a dramatic TV series in development called “Falcon Field”, based on his history book of the same name, in development.

Daryl has won a few awards, including an award-winning stage actor appearing in over a dozen productions, including “Pirates of Penzance” for the Carson Civic Light Opera and won a Drama-Logue Award and an Ebenezer Award for his performance in “A Christmas Carol” (1991).)

As an author, Daryl has published 19 books, has edited over 50 books and has a few more coming in the next two years.
He also heads up something very important for the State of Arizona and it’s happening right here in Tucson.

While actors and crew in Hollywood can be picky and choosy about their shooting locations, actors and crew in Arizona tend to view the entire state as local. Also, since attracting financing from outside the state, many here are willing to travel throughout the state to work on projects and assist each other. Although this is awesome and admirable, there exists a great need for better, centralized communication within the state film industry so we can know what is happening throughout Arizona.

The Arizona Film Expo will be a business exposition and conference for Arizona filmmakers, actors, directors, producers, writers, and crew members to:

Network: Get together with the greatest number of Arizona (and external) film industry professionals at once;
Disseminate and Gather Information: Find out and tell what is being worked on throughout our state and who/what resources are available here;
Build: Enlist support and financing from colleagues, businesses and other people in the greater Arizona community;
Educate: Workshops, how-tos, panels, and programming;
Show Off: Show the greater Arizona community, Hollywood and the rest of the country that we’re still here and we’re still a place to come and make movies;
Buy/Sell: Part of the expo includes tables and booths for vendors. We will also have agents, managers and distributors in attendance, have pitch sessions and more.
The event will consist of trade show floor and display tables for vendors and industry professionals; cities and towns; tourist attractions; supporting industries; chambers of commerce; economic development officials and more.
