BRX Pro Tip: What Do We Mean When We Say De Facto Media Outlet? Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you, Lee, we use this phrase a lot. What do we mean when we tell people de facto media outlet?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:13] This is one of the main reasons that a sponsor should host a show or even why someone should be a studio partner. When you host your own show, whether it’d be about a specific nature, or specific group of people, or if you have your own Business RadioX studio in a market, you become the safe place where people tell their story. And you’re the gathering point. You’re the hub. And then, you as the host or you as the studio partner get to be the one that has orchestrated this, that has facilitated this. So, you get all the credit.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:49] And then, if you do this over time, you literally become the de facto media outlet. You’re the place, the go-to place. You’re the place where these stories get told. And they’re happening either on your network, or they’re happening on your client’s show. Either way, by being the de facto media outlet, you have separated yourself from every competitor in the market. You’re the place. You might be a great accountant, you might be a great business coach, but you’re also the host of a show or the operator of a studio that tells the stories in that market or in that industry. And that’s valuable.

Stone Payton: [00:01:25] And you’re also the de facto person that they think about when they’re going to have somebody serve on a panel, speak at something, join some sort group. They know that you’re the person that does the bumpety-bump show. And if we’re going to do something meaningful in this community around this topic, we’re going to invite you to participate.

BRX Pro Tip: Niches Bring Riches

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, you are very fond of saying “niches bring riches.” What do you mean by that?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:12] It’s important to have catchphrases. It’s important to have little memorable phrases that have key concepts stick in your head. And this one is kind of fundamental in our work. The nichier you can make your show, the better chance you have of being the de facto media outlet for that specific niche. And then, when you are that, then you are the place to be for that type of content. You’re the place to be where those type of individuals gather. So, the nichier you are, the more value you provide, the more you serve that group, the more you stand out. And then, you’re no longer a vendor. Your sponsor is no longer just another person, another commodity inside of this, a bunch of other vendors. They are somebody who is serving. They are somebody that is really supporting and celebrating the work that goes on there. So, the nichier you are, the better chance that you have to make more money in that space.

Stone Payton: [00:01:10] But don’t you find that, sometimes, this is a little bit of an emotional challenge for a prospective client or a new client in that they want to try to do everything for everybody, and they say, “Look, we want to try to reach as many people as we can.” So, sometimes, this takes a little bit of diligence and sort of tough love to get people to focus in on a niche, and then maybe build some bridges to some other opportunities. But it’s not easy for some people, I find.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:39] Right. I think you have to have kind of an abundance mentality and believe that by really serving this small group, that you are going to have access to this larger group, because when you do serve, like we do a lot of work with women entrepreneurs, by doing a lot of good work for women entrepreneurs, male entrepreneurs don’t avoid us. They want to play too.

Stone Payton: [00:02:02] Right.

Lee Kantor: [00:02:02] So, they want to figure out how they can get what the women entrepreneurs have. So, it’s not a scarcity mentality. It’s an abundance mentality. But you can serve more by being really definitive of “These are the people I serve on this show.” And then, when you can do that, then the sky’s the limit of what you can serve beyond this one show, but this show should be about this niche.

BRX Pro Tip: How Long Should a Show Be? Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] Welcome back to BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, we do a lot of shows out of the studio. We do a lot of shows in several states now across a lot of studios. How long should a show? And what I really mean by that is an episode. How long should an episode be?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:17] As long as it takes, that’s how long it should be. I am not a believer of shorter is better. I think it should be as long as it has to be. In our studio, we allow 90 minutes for an episode. Our recommendation to most people is the show should be between 30 and 60 minutes. And given, at least, 30 minutes of time to kind of breathe after the show’s over, and hang out, and let the magic happen of the interacting and the energy of the room kind of come to fruition. But I think that a show can go at any length of time. And I don’t think you should rush it. I think that people’s attention span is as long as something is compelling and interesting.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:00] So, if you feel like your conversation within your interviews are getting kind of circular, and you’re rehashing things that you talked about before, then it’s probably a good idea to end it. But I don’t think that you have to end the show at any specific time just because the show — there’s no time limit. That’s the beauty of this long-form medium that you don’t have to have a time limit. It can be as long as it has to be. But it’s much better to end it sooner, and leave them wanting more, and wanting them to come back on than it is to wring out every drop of it, and the guest feeling like they never have to come on again because, again, the purpose of doing these shows is to build a relationship, accelerate relationships, and you want them to want to come back on. You want them to refer guests. You want them to enjoy the experience and play longer
