Colonel Ted Studdard always wanted to be a Marine. He began his service as a Private and would go on to retire 29 years later as a Colonel. His Marine service included leading an artillery platoon in combat, teaching tactics and leadership at the Marine Corps University, and planning and directing combat operations for a 20,000 person multi-national force. He also participated in international negotiations and worked on national security strategy in the Pentagon.

After suffering a heart attack, Ted faced new challenges—retiring and charting a new path. Post retirement, he transitioned to his second career with The Home Depot, a company whose values aligned with his own. Ted has held positions of increasing responsibility in field operations, corporate leadership training, talent acquisition and staffing, and business to business operations. These roles have given him a unique perspective on optimizing human capital in Corporate America.

Ted has appeared as a featured guest on national TV, radio, and podcasts. He is a published author and his upcoming book Depot to Depot is set to hit shelves in Fall of 2019.

As a keynote speaker, Ted speaks to a variety of audiences about individual and organizational leadership ranging from junior leaders to executives. Ted also educates business leaders and their HR partners about the value veterans bring to the civilian workforce and how to best incorporate them into Corporate America.

Ted and his wife Melissa have two grown children, Alexis and Ward, and currently reside in the greater Atlanta area. Ted is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Arts in Business Management. He also earned a Master of Military Studies degree from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

BRX Pro Tip: Where Should I Host My Audio? Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] Welcome back to BRX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, a question I get from brand-new podcasters, a lot of people who are just thinking about podcasting is, where should I host my audio? And here in our system, we don’t ever want any of our clients, and we don’t want our network ever to be vulnerable to a third-party service. So, we’ve made the investment in the infrastructure that we have our own content distribution network. We have our own library. And a great number of our audio files are also found hosted in other places, but there’s always that original file in the Business RadioX library.

Stone Payton: [00:00:43] But as we’re thinking about advising other people who may or may not join the Business RadioX network, yeah, for whatever our opinion is worth, you might choose to host it on some of these third-party providers that can give you statistics and all those cool numbers. But I would encourage you, always have your one good, solid original copy. That sounds like an oxymoron, but an original on your own library that you control, like an Amazon AWS account, I think, they call it. So, it doesn’t mean you can’t do all the other stuff, but you should. You don’t ever want to be vulnerable to these third parties, right?

Lee Kantor: [00:01:24] Right. There’s so many — how many times has it been where you’ve been part of a social network, a social media network, and all of a sudden, what was free is now not free, or in order to access your content is, all of a sudden a hassle to get the content off of there. So, you’d never want to be beholden to any of these third parties because if you are, then they can change the rules, and then you’re stuck. So, we try to give you as much autonomy and control to the best of our ability.

BRX Pro Tip: Where Do You Find Interns? Transcript

Stone Payton: [00:00:01] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor and Stone Payton here with you. Lee, what do you find interns?

Lee Kantor: [00:00:10] We get the interns, usually, from the universities that we serve. And there’s a lot of outreach from universities that want to have their students kind of involved and learn more about our work here, serving the business community. So, typically, this is one of the reasons, we talked about this in a previous episode about kind of the nonprofits that we serve or why do a show without charging. By building good relationships with universities in specific areas of the university, in the business school or the public relations school, then you’re able to kind of create a relationship where they want to have their students be part of our kind of operation, and they give them the opportunity to learn firsthand and hear these stories right from the horse’s mouth, from the business people that we interview. So, we’re giving the interns a great opportunity to learn about broadcasting, about interviewing, about relationships, business development, all kinds of good stuff that it’s important for them in their career and make connections and network with us. So, we get ours through universities by serving them, usually, first.

Stone Payton: [00:01:18] And don’t fall into the trap of feeling like you need to get a media, or broadcasting, or journalistic kind of intern. There are so many aspects to our business, important aspects that go to sales, and marketing, and operations, and communications. There’s a wide variety of skill sets that you need and a great deal of intern talent out there ready and available, right, man?

Lee Kantor: [00:01:43] Yeah. There’s a lot of people out there that wouldn’t think that we’re a good fit for them, but we really might be because we’re giving them an opportunity to use this kind of platform in a way that it’s not obvious and that they can learn a lot from being part of this.

Stone Payton: [00:01:58] And it’s a sexy internship. This is — I mean, everybody, we know this. This is a fun business. Can you imagine, when you were younger, if you had an opportunity to intern at a place like Business RadioX, and we even have the power, and we’ve done this before, Lee, where we give them a wide berth, man. We’ll let them produce their own show. We’ll let host a show. So, there’s a lot you can do for the intern as well.

Lee Kantor: [00:02:21] Yeah.
