From the beginning of his career, Len Romano made his colleagues his number one priority. Even after three decades at the YMCA and now serving as the president and CEO of Christian City here in Georgia, he has left many lasting impressions on the lives he has touched. While serving as the CEO of several YMCAs across the United States, Romano strived to make his team feel like family. He is a man of deep faith who is also a creative, outside-of-box thinker. Romano is a great leader who has trained and inspired 14 of his former employees to become C-level executives at several nonprofits all over the country. He is also a believer in promotion and an individual’s potential to succeed. Even today, past employees speak highly of his integrity, generosity and ability to build trust within a workplace. A previous employee and now President/CEO of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest said “If Len Romano were running for office, he would have my vote.” Len Romano is more than the CEO of a nonprofit. He is a leader who truly thinks of himself a team member who has been chosen to help others reach their full potential. He’s what you’d want in a good boss, and he modestly credits his parents’ hard work and dedication to ensuring that their children lived the American dream for the person he is today. As the son of two Italian immigrants who moved to the United States to better their children’s futures, Len had to begin his “learning by doing” principles early on in life. The love of a family is something that Len believes everyone should experience, which is why Len personally tries to make sure everyone who comes to Christian City knows that they are a part of the Christian City “family.”

Georgia Small Business Rock Stars

Mary Ellen McClanahan is the Director of Small Business at the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Shane Gottwals is the CEO of Gottwals Books.

Heather Abbott is the Sales and Marketing Director of SouthLife.

David Pope is the Chief of Innovation and Co-Founder of Strand RX.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), along with the Georgia Economic Developers Association (GEDA), announced Georgia’s 2018 Small Business Rock Stars. GDEcD and GEDA hosted a luncheon where four Georgia companies were honored for being an outstanding, unique and impactful small business. “What an honor it is to celebrate Georgia’s Small Business Rock Stars during the state’s annual Small Business Week,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “Anytime we can put a spotlight on Georgia’s small businesses is a win-win for the state. This year’s Rock Stars come from all over Georgia and keep our economy thriving, helping us maintain our status as the No.1 state in the nation in which to do business.” The 2018 Small Business Rock Stars winners include: AKESOgen in Gwinnett County, Gottwals Books in Peach County, SouthLife Supply Company in Thomas County and STRAND Clinical Technologies in Colombia County. “With almost 98 percent of Georgia companies employing fewer than 100 people, small business has a tremendous impact on Georgia’s economy,” said GDEcD Director of Entrepreneur & Small Business Mary Ellen McClanahan. “The Rock Star recognition provides the perfect opportunity to showcase how important small businesses are to the state and of course, the local economy.” These companies have shown increases in revenue, sales, exporting, product lines, jobs and economic impact. Additionally, the Small Business Rock Stars have shown dedication to their entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and a unique approach to conducting business to take them to the next level. “GEDA supports all types of economic development where jobs and investment are created, and where the quality of life is improved for our citizens,” said GEDA President Kevin Shea. “We are proud to support small businesses of all sizes through our members and their organizations all over the State of Georgia. Congratulations to this year’s award-winning small businesses.” Governor Nathan Deal declared March 19-23, 2018 as Georgia Small Business Week to celebrate the achievements made my small businesses throughout the state. The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s small business efforts and outreach are directed by GDEcD Director of Entrepreneur & Small Business Mary Ellen McClanahan.

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

–          Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.

–          Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We have produced 4 editions of this print magazine. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips. Our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication, however the magazine is currently on hold as we explore graphic designers. Our latest edition can still be found on our website.

–          Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2018, our conference will be held on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at Sanders Beach.

–          Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

–          Women in Leadership radio podcast show – sponsored by Pensacola Business Radio X. We hold monthly shows featuring local community leaders and other men and women in business. We engage our guests in conversational style in-depth interviews. They share their advice on topics such as mentoring, keys to success, time management tools, personal mantras and favorite inspirations, and what men can do to help support women in business.

–          Membership in Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is also available.

Contact directors@powerfulwomengulfcoast.com for more information or visit our website at www.powerfulwomengulfcoast.com or Facebook at “Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast” for all of our meeting information.
