Captain Doug Springer/Wilmington Water Tours
Captain Doug Springer and his wife Diane Upton returned to Wilmington in 2004 to pursue their dream of life on the water. Doug graduated in Marine Technology from Cape Fear Technical Institute in the early 1970’s. After working in the Gulf of Mexico, and on the waterways of South Carolina for about six years he joined the U.S. Air Force as a computer specialist and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of West Florida. After many years in the computer industry, and their children well on their own, Doug and Diane returned to their favorite city and back with their family of friends. They soon formed NE Cape Fear Charters and Exploration and put their beloved 36′ Wilard Vega Trawler to work. After three years of running a successful charter business, a large number of returning and enthusiastic customers provided the confidence in the belief that a water based tour company designed to serve the Cape Fear River basin at large was needed and thus “Wilmington Water Tours, Inc.” was born.
Doug is also deeply committed to Cape Fear River Watch a local grass roots organization with a mission to improve and protect the water quality of the Cape Fear River Basin. He served as the Executive Director for Cape Fear River Watch, Inc. from July of 2007 to January of 2010 while also doing duty as the Cape Fear RIVERKEEPER ®. The organization has grown to allow for a dedicated ED allowing Doug to focus on the duties of the RIVERKEEPER.
Alan has been a Downtown Wilmington resident since 1998. He retired from Navy submarine service and the Central Intelligence Agency. Alan has children and grandchildren here and in Northern Virginia. He cherishes a sense of community within Wilmington and the personal connectedness that comes from involvement with diverse service and “quality of life” organizations. Alan enjoys being in a place where children and grandchildren love to visit and share experiences with boating, beaches and the good life in the historic district.

Clinical research is a systematic approach to finding out what clinical approaches do and do not work and then using this gained knowledge in to advance and improve clinical decision making. There are many kinds of research, but in the US, about 59% of research focuses on drug research. At any one point in time the FDA has approximately 9-11 thousand clinical trials registered and these trials are seeking 2.8- 3 million subjects. Clinical trial investigative work is conducted in every disease state. Currently, a great deal of research is ongoing in cancer, cardiovascular, Neurology, and anti-infectives.
Bringing a drug to market in the US is a long (10-15 years) and expensive endeavor as about 90% of drug trials do not make it past the first phase of clinical trials. High quality results, timeliness and actionable evidence remain key indicators for a clinical trial. There are four phases of drug trials. Phase I involves safety testing in small numbers of patients. Phase II tests the drug in larger patient populations who have conditions or diseases the drug is meant to treat. Phase III is a pre-approval round where large populations of subjects with affiliated health issues test the new drug as compared to standard treatment. Roughly, 2/3 of Phase III clinical trials are approved by the FDA. Phase IV trials are post- FDA approval trials to explore additional adverse events, performance vs. competitive drugs and additional possible uses.
Patients often enroll in clinical trials with the belief that their experience may be of benefit to future patients. Clinical trial management is highly regulated with involvement and monitoring from many agencies. Informed consent is required. Most consumers and clinicians think of clinical trial research as being performed in large academic medical centers. However, there are many community level models that are available to extend participation and the quality of the research across populations as we are finding that drug response may vary more than previously expected due to each person’s unique pharmacogenomics.
Tune in to this segment to learn about clinical trial research in general and for more information about unique and highly successful community based models of research occurring in GA and the Southeast. Dr. Jeff Kingsley, a clinical research veteran at the national level and his associates will lend their expertise in the field of drug clinical trial research. Listeners can also obtain more information on www.serrg.com and the FDA’s research site at www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Erin Levin/Imba Means Sing
Erin Levin is a Peabody and Emmy award-winning humanitarian journalist and filmmaker. She first fell deeply in love with Africa and its people on her assignment to Madagascar with the Peace Corps. Her production and outreach experience includes ABC, CNN and with non-profits around the world.
The summer before her Peace Corps assignment, Erin served as outreach coordinator for Dispatch, the top-selling indie rock band. It was then that she met the African Children’s Choir for the first time and the dream of Imba Means Sing was planted.
At CNN, Erin worked closely on the 2008 election coverage, found a niche in covering Africa, musical activism and the changing face of homelessness. She became an abolitionist through her coverage of human trafficking. Erin also worked as the Filmmaker & Community Manager at Better World Books, an online social enterprise bookstore, galvanizing brand ambassadors, and representing the company at events like TED. During her time with Better World Books, she learned more about the global education crisis, further motivating her to produce Imba Means Sing, in order to bring awareness to the issue.
For the three years it will take to create Imba Means Sing, Erin is devoting her time to fundraising, marketing and producing the film. She also continues her activism through regular columns for Huffington Post, Paste and Rejuvenate magazines.
Erin is a proud wahoo from the University of Virginia and honored to be an Atlanta native. She loves: making new friends, adventuresome travel, live music and yoga.
