The computer screen is a common tool used in today’s workplace , home and society interactions. The American Optometry Association reports that in Western cultures, many American workers spend hours looking at computer screens. The Vision Council reported in 2012 that 70% of Americans will experience some eye strain from looking at digital devices annually. School children are also at risk as 60 million kids will use computers or digital devices (not TV’s) for > 1 hr/day. School performance starts with the eyes and it has been estimated that 80% of learning comes visually. Computer eye strain is the first computer related health complaint. Some vision health care experts report that if you are looking at a computer screen or digital device for > 2 hrs per day, you have a 90% chance of developing Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). CVS also affects work performance and the bottom line for companies with a significant workforce that works on computers and digital devices. It is becoming a public health issue as in 2013, over 10 million visits to eye professionals were made for CVS.

Computer Vision Syndrome is usually not permanent but can be very painful and it is very treatable. Typical causes are unsuitable work environments and improper use of eye glasses and contacts. Symptoms are typically associated with “near work” and can include: eye fatigue, dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. Treatments range from limiting exposure, to redesign of work environments (lighting, computer settings), eye drops and proper use and fitting of eye devices.

Tune in to this segment for more information about the causes, symptoms and treatments for Computer Vision Syndrome. Dr. Marc Lay, a local Atlanta optometrist who has completed doctoral research work on this subject, will lend his expertise on this topic affecting so many adults and children. Listeners can also obtain more information on www.georgiaeyephysicians.com.

As the holidays approach us, many people look forward to spending time with family and friends and to the joys of the season. However, the holidays can bring some unwanted guests- stress and depression, for adults and children. Changes occur from year to year and these changes can affect is especially around the holidays- even positive changes. For others, the holidays are associated with negative feelings. Even after the holidays, many people experience the “Post Holiday Blues.” A recent poll showed that 8 /10 Americans experience stress around the holidays.

External triggers for holiday stress and sadness may include: loss of a loved one through divorce, death or a move, loss of a job or home or toxic relationships. Internal triggers can may be unresolved grief, underlying medical conditions, fear, isolation and loneliness and the contrast between expectations and reality. Sometimes, these feelings may be more than the “blues” and mental health professional involvement may be warranted if problems such as changes in appetite, sleep and weight persist for more than a few weeks or there is a lack of energy, social withdrawal and continued sorrow.

For most of us, however, planning ahead and using some key strategies can get us through this season. Seeking serenity, practicing forgiveness, letting go of unrealistic expectations, avoiding substance abuse, staying away from toxic people, practicing self care, reaching out to others, planning things we enjoy ourselves can help.

Tune in to this segment for more information about holiday stress triggers and causes and some strategies to make your holiday experience be filled with more hope and gratitude. Dr. Theodore Morgan, a local Atlanta psychiatrist will lend his expertise on this timely topic and also discuss when more than our own strategies may be warranted and professional help enlisted. Listeners can also obtain more information on www.gabehavioralhealth.com.

Originally from New Jersey, by way of Florida, Andrew Sever received his Masters of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  in 1997.  Since then he has been a staff occupational therapist at Wesley Wood’s Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.  Andrew is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.

Andrew started EnABLE Home Solutions because he saw that the typical aging in place specialist approached the client from a “home remodeling” position rather than from a clinical one.  As part of Andrew’s home evaluation, he analyzes how a person interacts with his or her environment when completing a task or activity.

EnABLE Solutions believes that a client’s physical environment is equally important to one’s health.  Adapting the environment to the physical, mental and emotional health of the individual better positions that person to have a healthier life.

For more information about EnABLE Home Solutions contact Andrew at 770-841-9089 or view their web site at www.enablehomesolutions.com.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for more than 20 years.

Ryan Turner – Unsukay Community of Businesses

Ryan’s business card title reads “business dude,” but that doesn’t really tell the whole story. Since college he has worked in every role in a restaurant. He is not a chef, but is mistaken for one in the media sometimes. He cut his “business teeth” by opening Muss & Turner’s in February of 2005. It has been a series of real-time stop, drop and roll moments while drinking from a fire hose, adjusting and adapting on the fly and facing financial disaster multiple times. Baptism by fire perhaps? Many of the hard lessons learned were amidst the not-so-gentle cupping of the Great Recession. Luckily he has been able to figure some stuff out but remains eager to grow and understand how ignorant he still stands today.

His primary role is that of providing organizational context with a compelling vision and strategic business map in addition to financial & legal analysis. He is obsessed with understanding and effectively implementing the best practices of world class leaders and organizations. He invests a ton of his time and energy into coaching the operating partners, managers and front line staff within the Life & Leadership Program called The Table.

Ryan is a Founding Board member and Chairman of The Giving Kitchen Initiative and also currently on the Executive Board for the Georgia Restaurant Association and will serve as Chair of the GRA in 2015.

If he’s not working or plotting the companies’ next moves, he’s on the golf course, seeking wisdom and always doing his best to be a great husband and father.

Mike Gallagher – Restaurateur/Entrepreneur (Brick Store Pub, Leon’s Full Service, Kimball House)

Mike began his career in the restaurant business at 15 as a server assistant at a restaurant outside of Philadelphia where his two older brothers worked.

While at UGA Mike took a position waiting tables at a restaurant where he would meet his future business partners Tom Moore and Dave Blanchard. He left his position as General Manager in the Fall of 1996 to begin work on a Pub in Decatur, GA. After living on his brother’s couch for a few months and even donating his car to the cause the fellas signed a loan for what would become Brick Store Pub. The three went on to open up JAVAMONKEY in 2001 and subsequently sold it to search for their next venture. The building at the corner of Church St. and Ponce became available and LEON s Full Service was born. It opened in February of 2009. Beer and Wine would eventually take a back seat to cocktails and the food has received much acclaim under the hands of Eric and Robert Lupo as Chef and Sous Chef.

In the fall of 2013 Kimball House opened. Mike, Dave and Tom partnered with longtime employees and friends Bryan Rackley, Miles Macquarrie, Matt Christison and Jesse Smith. Kimball House would have Miles at the helm of the bar, Chefs Jeff Wall and Philip Meeker in the kitchen, Bryan tending to the Oyster/Raw Bar and Matt and Jesse leading the dining room. A great sense of pride for the original BSP guys as they helped achieve this dream while assisting with all the pitfalls that can plague a young start up.

Brick Store Pub has consistently been rated top 10 Beer Bars in the country and even the world. LEONs Full Service has been named top 50 Bars in the country by Food and Wine magazine. The path to provide a high level of hospitality and be a positive force in their chosen community of Decatur through great food and drink has been fruitful and Mike will tell you it’s just the beginning of the journey.
