SciTech Institute STEM and Innovation Summit with LocoRobo and Project Lead The Way

Take part in the future and interact with some of Arizona’s most influential thinkers at the 2019 STEM and Innovation Summit held in Scottsdale, Arizona.

This year’s statewide conference brought together Arizona’s key stakeholders in business, industry, education, government, NGO, the community to:

  • Share best practices, lessons and stories from the field
  • Experience the latest in Arizona technology and innovation
  • Build unique and diverse STEM networks
  • Discuss how we can work as connected ecosystem to improve public STEM awareness and improve workforce readiness

SciTech Institute STEM and Innovation Summit with LocoRobo and Project Lead The Way

LocoRobo’s mission is to empower students to solve problems, navigate opportunities, and pursue their dreams in the 21st century.

Dr. Pramod Abichandani serves as professor in the areas of Robotics and Data Science and has taught at Drexel University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the Wharton School of Business.

In addition, he is 1 of 4 directors of the 2nd largest makerspace in the world at NJIT and recently selected to help redesign the Next Generation Science Standards.

Project Lead The Way is a non profit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for PreK-12 students and teachers across the United States. We create an engaging environment necessary to thrive in an evolving world.

Sylvia Grace teaches at Camille Casteel High and is part of the founding faculty teaching Engineering,Math, and Honors and AP Chemistry. She earned her National Board Certification in Chemistry in 2006 and recertified in 2017. Sylvia is also an Adjunct Chemistry professor at Chandler Gilbert Community College. Sylvia was not always a teacher as she worked in industry as a process engineer for Analytical Technologies, IBM and Dell.

Her education is in the field of Chemical Engineering in which she earned both her Master’s (1995) and Bachelors, (1982) from New Mexico State University. She acquired her teaching credentials from Arizona State University in 1986.Professionally, Sylvia is a member of the Chemical Engineering Academic Academy and the Engineering Deans Council at NMSU. She was the 2005 Arizona recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Teacher Award and the SME National Engineering Teacher award in 2006.

Learn more about SciTech on their website and follow them on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

In your professional opinion, how can we better work as a connected ecosystem to improve public STEM awareness and improve workforce readiness?

Dr. Abichandani: Computer Science for all was proposed by Obama back in 2016. The majority of people, today, still view Computer Science as kids will be coders and work on robots after high school or college. Computer Science is the new basic skill that must be integrated in the daily curriculum for all grades, K-12. How do we communicate that? I think it’s getting away from “STEM based careers” and focus on students finding what problems they want to solve in the world. Every industry, Law, Medical, Design, Agriculture, and many more…to even Plumbing!..they’re all being impacted by computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our students need to be directed in an industry of their choosing coupled with the computer science and computational thinking skills to improve, excite, and increase creativity so our kids are prepared to pursue the path that speaks to them.

Silvia: The SciTech Institute has been impacting this ecosystem in the past few years by holding this event, now I believe it is time to bring these groups together in a more formal meeting environment to start impacting policy and education in our state.

In what ways are you and your organization involved in STEM education and/or the SciTech Institute?

Dr. Abichandani: Backbone Communications is the exclusive distributor for LocoRobo for the state of Arizona. With trained staff residing locally in Arizona, Backbone is able to offer onsite and regular support to ensure Arizona schools realize success with each implementation.

Silvia: Project Lead The Way brings together an ecosystem of teachers, administrators, colleges and universities, and education and business leaders to engage students in learning, as we prepare them to seek rewarding careers, solve important challenges, and contribute to global progress.

BEST OF HEALTH Dr Richard J Brown with Brown Plastic Surgery

Dr-Richard-J-Brown-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXDr. Richard J. Brown, MD, founded his practice, Brown Plastic Surgery in 2009 with the vision of creating a complete and personal plastic surgery experience focused on patients’ overall health and well-being. He provides procedures for body enhancements and breast reconstruction after breast cancer.

He and his team strive to make every patient feel like they are part of the family. Patient experience and satisfaction is Dr. Brown’s first priority. He prides himself on helping patients choose procedures that are right for them. He considers the short- and long-term health of his patients, both physically and psychologically.

Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Dr. Brown is a highly skilled plastic surgeon with over a decade of experience in his field. As an expert plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Brown is dedicated to helping others feel confident in their own skin.

A native of Atlanta, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. Before attending medical school in Chicago, Dr. Brown developed an interest in surgery while working as an orderly cleaning up operating rooms at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. He was eventually able to observe many surgeries, and the more he saw performed, the more he knew he wanted to become a surgeon. He earned his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School.

Dr. Brown first came to appreciate the specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery during his general surgery training at one of Chicago’s inner city hospitals. He saw the power of plastic surgery in changing and restoring lives after trauma.

Working with plastic surgery residents there, he conducted innovative research on the topic of scarring and wound healing. During that time, he wrote papers that were published in one of the top plastic surgery journals, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

After completing medical school, he attended Northwestern University to complete his General Surgery residency. Dr. Brown went on to become certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and complete his residency training in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha. He now has board certifications in both general surgery and plastic surgery.

WHY BEST OF HEALTH?

I am a Physician Assistant who has been caring for patients for over 20 years and Family Practice (cradle to grave) is my specialty.

Following the footsteps of three generations of family practice physicians (my father, grandfather and great grandfather) this was a natural and genetic calling that I do not regret.

Given this, I have a unique perspective and it’s time to share that perspective through Ask the PA. As a health care provider, teacher, business owner, patient, and advocate for my family and friends throughout the years, it has been painfully apparent there are disconnects within the current state of health care in the US and throughout the world. It can be confusing and frankly very scary.

It is my goal though this series, Best of Health, to bring people together that are passionate about their roles in the business of health care… and yes, whether or not you want to hear that it’s a business, it is — and that’s the fact. I will introduce to you great, dedicated practitioners and people with a passion for getting the word out about their personal journeys and causes. I will provide information about navigating through a confusing system, asking the right questions and share ways for saving money and time along the way.

It’s time to create change by partnering, empowering, and focusing on the patient, their families and their providers of care. It’s time for you to take the driver’s seat rather than leave your health care solely in the hands of entities such as insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

Stay tuned. Here’s to your Best of Health.

AZ BRANDCAST Kathy Morgan and Mike Marinello with AIGA Arizona

Kathy and Mike from Phoenix Design Week talked about design pet peeves and Arizona’s design identity and culture.

AIGAAZLogo

Formed in 1989, the AIGA Arizona chapter serves the creative professional community within our state, and augments the activities of the national AIGA organization. Our four-tiered mission is to bring programming to the community that helps to: – improve design ability – connect complementary disciplines – encourage social impact, and – promote community excellence AIGA Arizona programming includes our premier annual event, Phoenix Design Week which includes a 2-day conference, plus ongoing monthly events and exhibitions throughout the year, such as our Collide Meetup, Creatathon, a 24-hour pro bono marketing marathon, Adobe software training, student and professional portfolio reviews, networking mixers, hands-on workshops, and speaker opportunities with local and national creative experts. Phoenix-Design-Week

We’re especially proud of our contributions to the Design for Good program which uses design thinking to accelerate and amplify social change. Our chapter continues to increase its influence and demographic reach every year, with especially strong representation in metropolitan Phoenix, a vibrant core in Tucson, a growing presence in Flagstaff, as well as other communities throughout Arizona. Our student membership – the lifeblood of our organization – is growing and highly engaged, providing a continuum of representation from emerging designers through the most seasoned professionals.

Kathy-Morgan-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXKathy Morgan is co-founder and creative director of Morgan and Company, a Phoenix graphic design firm established in 1982. The firm handles brand management, print collateral, instructional materials, annual reports, direct mail and environmental design primarily for clients in the telecommunications, credit union, arts, legal and government arenas.

Kathy also serves as treasurer of AIGA Arizona, the professional association for design, co-director of Phoenix Design Week 2019 and as marketing/communications chair on the board of Arizona Photography Alliance.

Kathy’s “have passport, will travel” motto has landed her at various ports in Europe and Latin America in the past few years, not to mention jetting off to the Seattle area whenever it’s a dry heat in Phoenix. Alternately described by her own children as both a goofball and too serious, Kathy is a grammar and languages fanatic, golfs once a year on Christmas and has recently started writing a series of short memoirs.

Mike-Marinello-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXMike Marinello is the director of Phoenix Design Week, a week-long celebration of design organized by AIGA Arizona to unite our state’s creative professional community and provide a forum for sharing best practices, showcasing exceptional work, and gaining both personal and professional inspiration.

He has worked on simple solutions for single clients as well as complex projects involving web, print, and radio campaigns spanning diverse markets and including multiple stakeholders and their brands.

As a lifelong learner and wanderer at heart, Mike enjoys exploring and is not afraid to ask dumb questions. Mike likes to design, make, break, rinse, and repeat.

ABOUT YOUR HOSTS

It’s Mike Jones‘ mission to see brands grow and succeed – to reach their full potential. He believes every brand, like every person, has DNA that’s remarkable, but not every brand knows how to act like it (and communicate it to the world). It’s not about what’s trendy, whatever consumers are demanding, or whatever will turn the fastest profit. It’s about the long game – building real relationships with your customers and your community.

Chris Stadler likes to see great plans executed. In a world looking for magic formulas, his stoic outlook tends to point people back to doing the basics really well. Accountability and measurement are his tools. In the past, Chris served as the staff copywriter for a large credit union, UX/human factors researcher at the University of Iowa and full-time teaching faculty, teaching design, copy and strategy at the University of Oregon.

MIND MONEY MOTION Elena Zee with ACEE and Lupe Camargo with Perspective Financial Services

Financial success is 20% head knowledge and 80% behavior. So it’s crucial to be sure we have a good foundation of knowledge and understanding. Personal finance is a life skill that needs to be taught in our schools and reinforced at home. Elena Zee from the Arizona Council on Economic Education, shares how Arizona is educating students as part of the new law passed requiring personal finance as a graduation requirement. Childhood is often the beginning of our money script messages in our head and then consumer marketing knows how to trigger emotions to impact our purchasing, not always for our own good. Lupe Camargo, from Perspective Financial Services, discusses our habit loops and how we can make positive behavior change when it comes to money decisions or any area we want to improve in our life.

Our mindset and body/mind connections are key factors that impact our health, success, and happiness in life. Not sure where to start or what next step to take? Listen in to what our guests have to share and challenge yourself to act on one of their tips. Elena offers fun ways to help children practice critical thinking when it comes to money decisions, how to consider the opportunity cost when you make your own personal purchase decisions, and encourages us to focus our actions on the question “what kind of life do I want to live?”. Lupe reminds us of the science behind marketing, steps we can take to work around our brain’s tendencies in order to be successful in making change and how we can overcome that “I am not good with money” script in our head.

The ACEE envisions a world where all school-aged children are empowered through economic and personal financial literacy to make informed and rational choices acee-vertical-1-page-001throughout their lives as consumers, savers and investors, workers, entrepreneurs, citizens, and participants in a global economy.

Our Mission is to reach and teach every Arizona student to become financially and economically responsible in work and life.

Elena-Zee-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXElena Zee is President and CEO of the Arizona Council on Economic Education. Prior to this role, Elena had worked in the global financial services industry for more than twenty years, with her first job as an econometrician developing predictive modeling to launch new products at American Express in New York. She was then promoted to Director of International Operations responsible for customer service, business growth and process improvement worldwide.

Elena’s extensive work and travel internationally brought her to Arizona to build the international information management MIS and business analytics infrastructure and teams. Elena has a Master’s Degree in Economics from Columbia University and Double Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Math from Wellesley College. She is a graduate of Lodestar American Express Leadership Academy Class VII and Valley Leadership Class 40. She is also a Certified Financial PlannerTM, and taught financial planning and economics at universities.

Elena is very passionate about education, professional development, economic empowerment, and international exchange, having served on the boards of Global Economic Education Alliance, Organization for Nonprofit Executives, National Association of Economic Educators, Phi Beta Kappa of Greater Phoenix, and Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Arizona. Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire Kathleen Duffy Ybarra and Carrie Young with 2020 Women on Boards

2020 Women On Boards is a national campaign dedicated to increasing the percentage of women on corporate boards to 20% by 2020. The campaign redefines successful corporate governance, gender diversity standards, and creates a cultural imperative for corporate action. Together, we can make it happen!

Betsy-Berkhemer-Credaire-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXBetsy Berkhemer-Credaire is CEO of 2020 Women on Boards. In January 2018, Betsy was named national CEO of the 501c3 nonprofit public awareness campaign called “2020 Women on Boards” dedicated to achieving at least 20% of all public company board seats held by women by the year 2020. Its website 2020WOB.com tracks the Russell 3000 Index companies in the U.S. citing how many women are on each board, if any. 2020WOBLogo512x5121

As of 2018, the national statistic is 17.7% of all board seats in the Russell 3000 are held by women; and one-fourth of all public companies don’t have any women directors.

Author of the book “The Board Game – How Smart Women Become Corporate Directors,” with 10,000 copies in distribution nationally, Betsy explains how 58 women directors found their first board seats.

For 17 years, Betsy chaired the Los Angeles/Orange County chapter of Women Corporate Directors (WCD), a global nonprofit network of women serving on public and private boards. She is a frequent keynote speaker throughout the U.S.

Since 2000, she has served on the statewide board of the National Association of Women Business Owners-California (NAWBO-CA), and was instrumental in getting SB 826 passed, the first law in the country to require more women on public company boards.

Previously, she was on board of Southern California Leadership Network (SCLN) for 25 years, and the advisory boards of Edison (SCE) and UCLA Medical Center.
