Transition & Thrive with María Tomás Keegan and Friends

Transition & Thrive with María Tomás Keegan and Friends

María Tomás-Keegan has reinvented herself several times—from a young New England country girl to a New York City career girl. From a 30-year Corporate America rescue to a budding entrepreneur. As if those transitions weren’t enough, she experienced many other life-changing events in between, including divorce, loss, career upheavals, layoff and caregiving.

Those life-changing events can be difficult to deal with, and many women condition themselves to bury their pain, ignore their feelings and just go through the motions of life, coping and surviving.

María understands very well what it’s like to put on a mask every day pretending everything is fine. That’s how she dealt with her first experiences with major life events. The journey from dragging herself through difficult days to learning how to thrive led her to help other women get through these transitions easier and faster than she did.

On her journey, she got back in touch with what really mattered to her, rediscovered her voice, and got healthy again.

She now offers insights, wisdom, and compassion—with a healthy dose of humor along the way—in her work today.  The joy of helping women to thrive again is why she became a Certified Life Coach, specializing in transition. It’s why she founded Transition & Thrive with María.

LEADERSHIP LOWDOWN with Tom Hatten of Mountainside Fitness and Russ Yelton of Yelton and Associates

March 10, 2018 by Karen

LEADERSHIP LOWDOWN with Tom Hatten of Mountainside Fitness and Russ Yelton of Yelton and Associates

It all started with an idea. An idea to be the friendliest gym in town. To know their members’ names, not just their numbers. To offer free towel service, even if that meant doing laundry at his apartment until two in the morning. This was the beginning of Mountainside Fitness.

In 1991, founder and CEO, Tom Hatten, began Mountainside Fitness while a junior at Arizona State University. Together with his family and friends, Tom brought his dream to life. From welding gym equipment to painting walls to selling memberships, the early years were true sweat equity in every sense of the word. Mountainside Fitness was founded on community and value, and those continue to be at the company’s core as they grow into 16 locations and over 80,000 members this year.

In November of 2005, Mountainside Fitness Centers was voted 1 of 10 “hottest growing” companies in Arizona by Biz AZ magazine when 5 clubs were added to the chain. Tom has also received various awards and accolades throughout his career, including being voted 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Business Journal/USA Today, being the Cover story of Entrepreneur Magazine July 2004, and being featured in Forbes Magazine, US News and World Report, Club Solutions Magazine, Paradise Valley Magazine, and Club Insider Magazine.

In addition to growing his company, Tom is a motivational speaker to many business organizations, colleges, high schools and churches. His topics range from entrepreneurship, economics, and corporate community involvement. Hatten is also featured in the college textbook titled Entrepreneurship: A Practice Based Approach co-written by authors: Christopher Neck (Management Professor Arizona State University), Heidi Neck (Entrepreneurship Professor Babson College), Emma Murray (Consultant). And he is currently working on another book Dream On: An Entrepreneurs desire to overcome which is due out in Spring 2018.

Hatten at one time co-hosted the mid-day all fitness request hour for local KZZP FM radio. Tom strongly values the community and has dedicated his time and resources, not only to helping people live healthier lifestyles, but also to social responsibility. Some of the highlights of his commitment to the community include:

2016 Honoree – Teen Lifeline Foundation
2016 Honoree – Muscular Dystrophy Association
2016 Chairman of the board – Make-A-Wish Arizona
2017 Honored as one of the Most Admired Leaders by the Phoenix Business Journal
2017 Board member – AZ Special Olympics
2017 Board member – AZ Diamondbacks Foundation

Tom is also a Founding Board member of AZ Bank & Trust, member of the YPO (Young Presidents Organization) Scottsdale, and member of the International CEO’s against cancer. Born in Austin, Minnesota, he has lived in Arizona for all but 6 months of his life. Favorite charitable organizations include: Make-A-Wish Arizona, Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, Special Olympics and MDA of AZ.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS Larry Jones with Insperity and Chris Rude with Arizona Business Bank

Insperity is a 30+ year old company that has assisted over 150,000 businesses and over 2 million employees across the country.  The company’s original founder and current CEO, Paul Sarvadi envisioned making business owners’ lives easier by taking HR and administrative burdens off their plates.  So he decided to start a company with about 600 sq ft and one phone.  Since then, Insperity has grown to a 3 Billion dollar company by simply helping clients also reach their goals.  Insperity uses the same methods we have used internally to help businesses run better, grow faster and make more money.

Insperity is based in Houston, with 60 offices across the country.  They are dedicated to helping level the playing field for small businesses to compete against larger corporations by helping them attract and retain top talent with big company perks and benefits.  Insperity create efficiencies by bundling many of the items that you already pay for as a business owner like payroll, administrative support, employee benefits, workers comp and local HR support with customized service plans.  They also help a small business mitigate risk, while keeping up with all tax and government compliances.  Taking all of these items off the plate of the business owner, lets them focus on what they do best and to grow their business.

Larry Jones is going on his 2nd year with Insperity and it was their passion to help small businesses that drew him to this team. Larry grew up around several family businesses and he has seen first-hand what the burden of running a business can be like.  His parents had many struggles running their businesses, and he’s seen similar struggles with friends and extended family that run their own businesses too.  Insperity help business owners manage this burden of being an employer and help create some efficiencies in bundling many services together.

ABOUT PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE HOURS SERIES

Project Management Office Hours is intended to provide Project Management professionals a place to drop in and discuss Success Stories, Best Practices, and Lessons Learned.  Project Management Consultant Joy Gumz has shared with us, “Operations keep the lights on, strategy provides the light at the end of the tunnel, but project management is the train engine that moves the organization forward.”

Each of us has a unique story to tell, but collectively we share a message that organizations who embrace Project Management Best Practices perform better than those which don’t.  Organizations which align Projects to Strategy perform better.  Organizations with Engage Executive Sponsors deliver better results.  Organizations which measure Project Management performance outperform those which don’t.

During our Project Management Office Hours, we hear directly from Industry leaders how to make an impact in our profession. How we, collectively, will Advance Project Management Best Practices, One Listener at a time!

Jodi Towns, Founder and Marketing Mixologist for Towns Consulting LLC. My business background is a bit of a puzzle, with all points back to “I love people!” I’ve been called by many friends and colleagues a “connector” and one of my favorite quotes that reads something like this, “A room full of strangers are just friends I haven’t yet met.” Professionally, I’ve worked mostly in the financial and healthcare industry, held positions like Director of Marketing, Training & Development Director, and CEO of a staffing/recruiting firm.

Towns Consulting LLC offers go-to market strategies mostly in the healthcare space. Jodi offers consulting services to help businesses (mostly physicians and other medical practitioners, including cosmetic and aesthetic service providers) create marketing strategies to launch or re-launch their business products or services to the world. Jodi has spent the past 7 plus years in healthcare, specifically Concierge Medicine (membership based medicine) aesthetics and nutrition as a Marketing Director and knows what it takes to make a medical practice stand out from the rest, attract your ideal patient, build physician referral partnerships and create a practice you can be proud of!

Founded in 2017, Jodi Towns has organized Networking for Healthcare Mix and Mingle events bi-monthly growing her group to 200 plus members. This group is comprised of physicians, practitioners, medical marketers/promoters and is an opportunity to build connections and relationships to support others in the medical community. WHY BEST OF HEALTH?

I am a Physician Assistant who has been caring for patients for over 20 years and Family Practice (cradle to grave) is my specialty.

Following the footsteps of three generations of family practice physicians (my father, grandfather and great grandfather) this was a natural and genetic calling that I do not regret.

Given this, I have a unique perspective and it’s time to share that perspective through Ask the PA. As a health care provider, teacher, business owner, patient, and advocate for my family and friends throughout the years, it has been painfully apparent there are disconnects within the current state of health care in the US and throughout the world. It can be confusing and frankly very scary.

It is my goal though this series, Best of Health, to bring people together that are passionate about their roles in the business of health care… and yes, whether or not you want to hear that it’s a business, it is — and that’s the fact. I will introduce to you great, dedicated practitioners and people with a passion for getting the word out about their personal journeys and causes. I will provide information about navigating through a confusing system, asking the right questions and share ways for saving money and time along the way.

It’s time to create change by partnering, empowering, and focusing on the patient, their families and their providers of care. It’s time for you to take the driver’s seat rather than leave your health care solely in the hands of entities such as insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.

Stay tuned. Here’s to your Best of Health.
