Cleanliness Leads to Business Success E29

Mike Derryberry is the Co-Owner and Chief Visionary Officer for Compass Cleaning Solutions. He has degrees in Political Science and Business Administration as well as a Masters Degree in Theology. In 2019 he wrote and published his first book, HARD KNOCKS, A Real World Education in Business and Personal Growth, which chronicles the lessons learned over the last two decades as a small business owner.

If you have thought that janitorial services is a necessary expense that you incur as a business, rather than something that increases the bottom line, you need to listen to Mike describe what they do for businesses and how their culture carries over to their janitorial services customers.

Compass-Cleaning-Solutions

Compass Cleaning Solutions is a franchise based commercial janitorial company serving customers throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area and other outlying areas. Currently Compass has nearly 100 franchise owners across the valley, while servicing close to 600 monthly and regularly recurring customers ranging from medical to industrial, education to Golf courses and of course general office space to restaurants. The franchise owners are supported by a staff of 11 located in their Tempe corporate office.

Beginning in 2004 the objective has always been to accomplish two things, change the public perception of Janitorial by raising the standards of supplies, tools, equipment and education and empowering small business development. From the beginning it was clear that many companies had not progressed from decades old methods and products. “Being an outsider to the industry gave us an advantage. We had no bias toward traditional methodology and coming from a technology world there wasn’t any fear of the options available.”

Over the last 16 years as others began to adopt the same technology Compass Cleaning Solutions had adopted previously, they have been forced to continually reinvent themselves and how they bring service to the business community. Today they offer a wide variety of services under one roof that many do not, allowing them to stay ahead of the needs of all industries due to the changing business environment.

Today their primary focus is on creating and maintaining a culture of excellence and ethics. In 2015 and again in 2016 Compass was selected as a BBB Torch Award for Ethics Finalist. This year, 2020, they were again selected as a finalist … but also were selected as a 2020 Torch Award for Ethics, Winner.

Mike-Derry-Cleanliness-Leads-to-Business-Success-E29Mike Derryberry is the Co-Owner and Chief Visionary Officer for Compass Cleaning Solutions, an Arizona Franchise based commercial Janitorial Company. He has degrees in Political Science and Business Administration as well as a Masters Degree in Theology. He and his wife Cheri have been married for 44 years and he has two adult daughters. His passion for small business most likely grew from observing his father who owned multiple businesses while growing up.

As Mike entered the workforce it was not clear he would enter into business ownership until in 1979 while in graduate school Mike started a small case work manufacturing company to have an income and flexibility while going to school. The business grew and by the time he had completed his time at school his business had contractors, furniture stores, and custom clients booked for months ahead. He discovered that his passion for creating beautiful and functional furniture combined with his business ‘experience’ gave him the bug.

After selling that business and going back to employment for over a decade he later began a software training and development company servicing the casework industry. But when technology ‘displaced’ his business it was time to find something more permanent with his wife and partner. For 16 years they have been building a network of small businesses via franchising with a singular goal, ‘to change the public perception of cleaning’. Mike often repeats the mantra, ‘We exist to partner with other businesses to increase their Productivity, Profitability, and performance by creating clean, healthy, safe and organized environments’. He says, ‘Our cause is to raise the standard of clean by empowering entrepreneurship’.

In 2019 he wrote and published his first book, HARD KNOCKS, A Real World Education in Business and Personal Growth, which chronicles the lessons learned over the last two decades as a small business owner. He is a regular contributor and speaker for BNI Arizona and an advocate for small businesses across all industries.

David Burckhard with Valley of the Sun YMCA E17

Co-hosts, Jennifer Burwell and Kyle McIntosh had a wonderful conversation with David Burckhard, Executive Director of the Valley of the Sun YMCA, on this episode of MAC6 Community Connection Radio Show and Podcast. They talked about the power of community and the unique role the YMCA has played in the lives of many.

With all that has been going on in our world, it is critical that we have businesses like the YMCA to help people get through these trying times.

Dave Burckhard and his staff have played a critical role in providing emergency childcare services throughout the pandemic. They are also providing Thanksgiving meals to those in need. The Tempe community is stronger because of leaders like Dave and the YMCA.

Fun fact – each YMCA is empowered to serve their community in a way that is most helpful – each Y will look and operate differently.

The Y is for EVERYONE. The Valley of the Sun YMCA is not only one of the oldest nonprofits in the state of Arizona, we are also one of the largest. Born in 1892, before Arizona became a state, we serve over 100,000 families and are located in 17 communities across the state.

At the Y we value the little things, and believe healthy living is not just a fad, it’s a way of life. We are a community, and a family, embracing today’s social responsibilities together. For over a century we have been developing healthy minds, bodies, and spirits.

The YMCA is so much more than a gym and is for everyone. Through our initiatives, programs, and services youth realize their potential; teens and young adults prepare for college; families spend time and have fun together; people are healthier in mind, body, and spirit; job seekers prepare for employment; newcomers are welcome and embraced; a nationwide service ethic is fostered; and so much more.

David-Burckhard-Valley-of-the-Sun-YMCADave Burckhard is a YMCA professional and serves as The Executive Director of The Tempe Family YMCA, a branch of The Valley of The Sun YMCA.

Dave was born and raised in New York, and received his Undergraduate and MBA degree from Springfield College, in Springfield, MA. Dave has been working for the YMCA since his graduation in 2012.

Dave and his family relocated to Arizona in 2018. He has a wife, and two daughters.

ABOUT YOUR MAC6 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS CO-HOSTS

KyleMcIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6.  Day to day, his main operational role is on the “spaces” side of the business, focusing on creating thriving communities in the commercial office buildings, the co-working space, and the co-manufacturing space.  The other role that he plays is that of EOS implementer, working with clients to bring the Entrepreneurial Operating System, from the book Traction® to their businesses.  Additionally, he sits on the boards of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona, and The Tempe Chamber of Commerce, sustaining Tempe’s quality of life and keeping our community and economy vibrant.

Exploring Sustainability Initiatives E8

During this discussion, host Kelly Greene chats with CSO Shalae and their guests Dorie Morales of Green Living Magazine and Tom Mehlert from AzStRUT. They explored sustainability initiatives in Arizona and beyond. The conversation was lighthearted while connecting on big issues like food deserts and the digital divide.

While Tom and Dorie serve the community in different ways, it was a wonderful conversation regarding ways to integrate the networks and utilize resources for the best outcome for all.

Listeners will want to hear the discussion around ways students are taking a more active role in sustainability initiatives and big businesses are tuned in. Building interest in elementary and middle school will help more families become aware about waste. Researching municipality agreements on recycling can help sort the materials before they reach the bins. Working together will make a difference and asking youth to be involved will be the change we need to see for our future.

Kelly-Greene-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAfter graduating from Bolivar-Richburg High School in rural western New York and joining the United States Army, Kelly Greene learned quickly to adapt to her surroundings to be successful. She attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and played shortstop on the Tiger softball team while earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

After graduating from Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, she traveled the world with the military. While stationed in Misawa, Japan, Kelly fell in love with learning about cultures around the world. Even as a deployed Soldier during Operation Iraqi Freedom for two tours, she found opportunities to connect with the local children to form the Victory Base Council Girl Scouts with her fellow servicemen.

In 2013, she was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and traveled the country by air and had the opportunity to utilize the most advanced technologies available to the tactical HUMINT operations in theater. Upon return from combat, she retired with 21 years of service and began teaching 6th grade Math.

After being selected as a Westside Impact Teacher of the Year and having her Fiesta Bowl Charities Wish Granted for a morning news studio, she was asked to begin a new class on campus – 7th grade STEM! Using her enthusiastic nature and combined with her strong classroom management she was able to design curriculum based on the Engineering Design Process to have her 7th graders complete a new project every 2 weeks!

She is excited to serve as the Director of Student Success for the rapidly expanding Chief Science Officers Program. Her goal is to push students just a bit outside of their comfort zone so they can see for themselves the power of their own ideas.

Protecting your Privacy E28

Austin and Landon were honored to have Adam Jackson, CEO of 360 Privacy, as their guest in honor of Veteran’s Day. Adam’s unique background as a member of the elite US Army Special Forces has influenced the way in which he picks his team. He gives some great advice to business owners on the importance of taking your time during the hiring process to ensure employees are the best fit for carrying out operations with highly effective results.

You’ll want to listen in as Adam talks about the need to digitally protect your information and the serious consequences of a data breach. This is a fascinating show to hear about how exposed we truly are and how to better protect ourselves.

Over 280 websites will buy your personal information from data aggregators and sell it to anyone willing to pay a nominal fee for it. This websites offer access to people’s home address, phone numbers, lists of relatives, Amazon wish lists, VIN numbers, and Social Security Numbers.

360 Privacy removes their clients information from these websites then uses both humans and automated processes to follow up daily to ensure their clients information stays deleted.

adam-jackson-Protecting-your-PrivacyAdam Jackson founded 360 Privacy in 2020 to help his clients control their personal information.

Prior to founding 360 Privacy, he was responsible for managing the security of Jason Aldean’s tour. Prior to that, Adam served in the US Army Special Forces.
