Exploring Tech Companies Supporting Our Community E4

Exploring Tech Companies Supporting Our Community E4

Exploring Tech Companies Supporting Our Community E4

In this episode of STEM Unplugged, we’re exploring Arizona tech companies supporting our community to stay connected. Both Cox and Verizon are noted for making an effort to reduce the digital divide and providing resources for online learning at the start of the pandemic. They are also making an effort to increase their support systems for the opening of school in August – in person and virtually.

We would like to highlight and celebrate the teachers, students, parents and essential employees for doing their best during this time. With the support of the Tech industry in Arizona, additional access to resources will be available. Get connected with companies making a difference and let’s discuss how to provide mentoring to non-tech individuals to learn how to excel in the virtual education platforms.

Cox Communications is committed to creating meaningful moments of human connection through broadband applications and services. The largest private telecom company in America, Cox proudly serve six million homes and businesses across 18 states.

As a sector, animal welfare is changing rapidly and the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) is leading the movement as Arizona’s premiere animal welfare organization. Community-wide, euthanasia is down a whopping 86 percent and the number of pets saved and rehabilitated is at an all-time high thanks to AHS and its strategic collaborations with other organizations.

AHS serves as the safety net for the community’s most vulnerable pets. AHS saves lives through some of the most innovative programs in the country: aggressive spay/neuter initiatives; comprehensive medical care in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital and intensive care units; rescue and cruelty investigations by AHS’ Emergency Animal Medical Technicians; and a Pet Resource Center that helps keep pets in loving homes.

Saving lives through innovative services costs more every year, and the life of every pet saved is the direct result of gifts from thousands of friends, partners and donors. Through innovation, compassion and excellence, AHS saves the most vulnerable animals and enriches the lives of pets and people.

Dr-Steven-Hansen-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAs the Arizona Humane Society’s top dog, Dr. Steven R. Hansen oversees AHS’ organizational operations and leads the implementation and execution of its strategic plan as AHS and its partners transform Maricopa County into one of the best places to be a pet.

By leveraging innovation, compassion and excellence, AHS has collaboratively led transformational change within its own shelter, leading to a dramatic reduction in euthanasia (two paws up from our pets!) and a renewed focus on treating the sick, injured and abused animals who need AHS’ help the most.

Prior to joining AHS, Dr. Hansen spent 16 years with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), most recently as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Hansen also served as Director of Veterinary Research and Support for Wellmark International and practiced clinical veterinary medicine in Houston and Chicago.

He serves on a variety of mission-critical boards, including the Hill’s Shelter Advisory Board, the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Legislative Advisory Committee, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, the American College of Animal Welfare and Arizona State University’s Community Advisory Council.

Dr. Hansen received his BS and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Iowa State University and received an MS and MBA from the University of Illinois. Dr. Hansen is board certified by the American College of Animal Welfare and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology.

It also leverages the expertise and passion of Banfield Pet Hospital associates to care for pets in need. At the Banfield Foundation, we are committed to making a better world for pets because they make a better world for us.

Paula-Little-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAs Director of Development for the Banfield Foundation, Paula Little brings more than 20 years of fund development leadership and contemporary perspectives on nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.

Angry Black Woman E2

Three African-American panelists discuss how and why the angry black woman description may or may not be a myth. Panelists shared experiences with white Americans that may trigger reactions commonly described as being an “angry black woman”. Experiences include interactions experienced in the military, corporate America, and tech fields that would cause the average person to express anger.

For those who are not people of color, you’re getting a rare chance to walk in the shoes of a person of color to understand the subject of racism, and better be able to see it when it rears its ugly head.

The Emerson Theater Collaborative (ETC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to serve youth, under-represented communities and artists with an emphasis on diversity, by producing innovative and thought-provoking theater both in southeastern Connecticut and Sedona, Arizona. Camilla-Ross-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXCamilla Ross is the President and Chairman of Emerson Theater Collaborative, Inc., Producer and Actress (Portray’s Harriet Tubman – Harriet Tubman’s Dream written by Lisa Giordano). She is also the President and Chairman of the Sedona Arts Academy.

I love the art of live theater and love what it does to the human soul and spirit. It moves us to look at life differently. To leave off the rose-colored glasses and really see the human condition.”ETC is a shining example. Founded in 2008 to give voice to actors’ innate talent for character development, Camilla has since produced more than 20 inspired, original performances. Emerging and professional cast and crew have blossomed under her guidance. And together they’ve created profound, can’t-ever-forget shows that illuminate social issues, and transform audience curiosity into concern and action. ETC_Logo_CMYK

Camilla is also deeply involved with youth, their visions for social change, and the desire to see the world as a stage of peace. To that end, she’s a tireless advocate for children and adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. She gives kids and teen real-life theatrical experience through ETC’s Summer Youth Program and enlivens their eagerness to learn about the history and genuine heroes through ETC’s school programs. ABOUT YOUR MAC6 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS CO-HOSTS

KyleMcIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

E10 Launching Ethically Sourced and Sustainable Products with Everett Jesse

Everett is a great example of not letting life’s challenges set you back. After being diagnosed with kidney failure, he changed his lifestyle and embraced a healthier diet and more active outdoor activities. This is when Everett realized he had a problem with hydration packs always hanging and drying around his kitchen, and thus BōnDry was formed. He used his engineering experience and self-taught sewing skills to create his first prototypes.

Everett has a great back story to the company name of Fossil Outdoors. It goes to prove that we never really outgrow our childhood interests, and he built a brand around it, using his passion and values to lead the way.

Everett stays true to his beliefs and keeps his brand focused on those values. Throughout the process, he’s stayed true to quality and keeping production in the US despite the opportunity for lower manufacturing costs overseas.

Everett is constantly thinking of other products to complement BōnDry, and shared that Fossil Outdoors will be releasing moisture-wicking shirts next. Tune in to feel inspired by Everett’s story and growing success as a business owner.

Fossil Outdoor, Inc. is an innovative Outdoor retail company based out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Their focus is to solve common pain-points within the Outdoor industry while being as environmentally responsible as possible. Fossil Outdoor

Their flagship product BōnDry (pronounced Bone Dry) is the world’s first automatic hydration backpack dryer. Rather than having to prop your hydration bladder open for hours or throw it in the freezer all you need to do is rinse the bladder, and insert BōnDry then put your gear away.

No more mess and no more germs. The materials for BōnDry are sustainably and ethically sourced and it is manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona.

You can shop Fossil Outdoor at their site or on Amazon. Keep an eye out for new and exciting products as this bootstrap startup grows.

E10-Launching-Ethically-Sourced-and-Sustainable-Products-with-Everett-Jesse1Everett Jesse has spent his entire career as the founder or founding team member of start-ups in immerging industries like automation, renewables, and blockchain. He has worked closely with lawmakers at local, state, federal, and international levels to progress nonconsumptive hydropower. He has provided verbal testimony to lawmakers in D.C. on technology and fiscal policy.

After being diagnosed with kidney failure, Everett adopted a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. He became an avid hiker, mountain biker, and runner. This meant that his hydration bladders were always hanging up air drying in his small Scottsdale apartment making a mess. Due to his background in earth science and engineering, he came up with the idea for BōnDry.

Now he leads Fossil Outdoor using his history of hard Knox to move the business from bootstrap start-up to an exciting up and coming brand.

E57 Purpose Driven PMO and PMO Joe Sharing His Story

A rare in-depth discussion with PMO Joe as we had to make a late change with our scheduled guest. We hope to have Cornelius Fichtner join us on a future show.

Joe shared with us the evolution he’s made during the pandemic with choosing how to prioritize his time with family, work and community. Focusing on top priorities and pulling up anchors has allowed Joe and The PMO Squad to focus on pushing forward with several initiatives.

He walked us through the Purpose Driven PMO and the 3 drivers Purpose, Measure, and Optimize to help PMO Leaders build or improve their team, capabilities and value delivery. Soon to be released with the Purpose Driven PMO training and certification program and by year-end, the Purpose Driven PMO book.

Also in the works is the 2020 PMO Leadership Survey which will explore the role and impact of Leadership on PMO success. The survey will be released globally on July 15th. Joe also touched on another book in process which is a recap of stories and lessons from the amazing guests from the past 3 years on the show. Listen to hear these topics and other perspectives while getting to learn a bit more about Joe and his priorities.

ABOUT PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE HOURS SERIES

Project Management Office Hours is intended to provide Project Management professionals a place to drop in and discuss Success Stories, Best Practices, and Lessons Learned.  Project Management Consultant Joy Gumz has shared with us, “Operations keep the lights on, strategy provides the light at the end of the tunnel, but project management is the train engine that moves the organization forward.”

Each of us has a unique story to tell, but collectively we share a message that organizations who embrace Project Management Best Practices perform better than those which don’t.  Organizations which align Projects to Strategy perform better.  Organizations with Engage Executive Sponsors deliver better results.  Organizations which measure Project Management performance outperform those which don’t.

During our Project Management Office Hours, we hear directly from industry leaders how to make an impact in our profession. How we, collectively, will Advance Project Management Best Practices, One Listener at a time!

E9 Staying Ahead of the Curve with Randy and Heather Lisciarelli

Running a family business can be challenging at times and very rewarding at others. Randy & Heather Lisciarelli have experienced all the ups and downs that you can imagine over their 20 years (November 2020) in business and they have done it all together. They have had to pivot several times during their 20 years as the business itself changed, or what customers needed or demanded changed during those years and Verapax Marketing has figured out how to just get it done. There are a couple of stories in this episode of them doing things for their customers that just had nothing to do with what they were hired for, but Randy & Heather enjoy being the “special ops team” for their customers. This episode is well worth the listen.

Randy & Heather Lisciarelli run the epitome of what one would call a “family business”. All of their kids have been involved/present at the office throughout their entire lives. They run a solid business, they have a really cool story and they have fun together.

The VeraPax Marketing Team gets it. They care about you, your marketing and business…period. That is what sets them apart from others.

Servicing Clients across the United States for more than 20 years, they continually work to truly understand your unique marketing and business goals. From brand management, driving sales, measuring and reporting on campaign performance, they deliver excellent ROI to Clients. VeraPaxMarketingLogo1200x1200

Always learning and improving, you can expect a blend of what works, as well as testing new channels and technologies, delivering on your unique goals. Their job is to make you successful and they deliver.

Randy-and-Heather-Lisciarelli-VeraPaxRandy and Heather Lisciarelli are both graduates of Arizona State University. Roughly two years after graduating from ASU, they had an opportunity to work for Heather’s parents in their print and marketing business. The company was expanding with an additional location in Ohio. Randy and Heather managed the Phoenix location for several years, and during that time, Randy realized his passion to be an entrepreneur.

In November of 2000, they branched out on their own and VeraPax was born (just 4 months after the birth of their first son). This November they celebrate 20 years in business.

Randy casts the vision and spearheads their business adventures. Heather manages the details, regulatory requirements, and finances of those adventures.

They are each quick to point out they have a fabulous team on board for the journey. Each person of Team VeraPax may have differing levels of responsibility, but each one is of equal importance when it comes to being successful at reaching their ultimate goal, servicing their clients with a concierge level of service and excellence, and making a positive difference in the world around them, one person at a time.
